Genèse 3
1 Mais le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux de la terre qu’avait faits le Seigneur. Il dit à la femme: Pourquoi Dieu vous a-t-il commandé de ne pas manger du fruit de tous les arbres du paradis?
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, Yes, has God said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 La femme lui répondit: Nous mangeons du fruit des arbres qui sont dans le paradis:
And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 Mais pour le fruit de l’arbre qui est au milieu du paradis, Dieu nous a commandé de n’en point manger, et de n’y point toucher, de peur que nous ne mourions.
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.
4 Mais le serpent dit à la femme: Point du tout, vous ne mourrez pas de mort.
And the serpent said to the woman, You shall not surely die:
5 Car Dieu sait qu’en quelque jour que ce soit que vous en mangiez, vos yeux s’ouvriront; et vous serez comme des dieux, sachant le bien et le mal.
For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 La femme donc vit que le fruit de l’arbre était bon à manger, beau à voir et d’un aspect qui excitait le désir; elle en prit, en mangea et en donna à son mari, qui en mangea.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also to her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 En effet leurs yeux s’ouvrirent; et lorsqu’ils eurent connu qu’ils étaient nus, ils entrelacèrent des feuilles de figuier, et s’en firent des ceintures.
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 Et lorsqu’ils eurent entendu la voix du Seigneur Dieu qui se promenait dans le paradis, à la brise du soir, Adam et sa femme se cachèrent de la face du Seigneur Dieu au milieu des arbres du paradis.
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 Mais le Seigneur Dieu appela Adam, et lui dit: Où es-tu?
And the LORD God called to Adam, and said to him, Where are you?
10 Adam répondit: J’ai entendu votre voix dans le paradis; et j’ai eu peur, parce que j’étais nu, et je me suis caché.
And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 Dieu lui dit: Mais qui t’a appris que tu étais nu, si ce n’est que tu as mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger?
And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?
12 Et Adam répondit: La femme que vous m’avez donnée pour compagne m’a présenté du fruit de l’arbre, et j’en ai mangé.
And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 Alors le Seigneur Dieu dit à la femme: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Elle répondit: Le serpent m’a trompée, et j’ai mangé.
And the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 Le Seigneur Dieu dit au serpent: Parce que tu as fait cela, tu es maudit entre tous les animaux de la terre: tu ramperas sur ton ventre, et tu mangeras de la terre tous les jours de ta vie.
And the LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; on your belly shall you go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life:
15 Je mettrai des inimitiés entre toi et la femme, entre ta postérité et sa postérité: Elle te brisera la tête, et toi, tu lui tendras des embûches au talon.
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
16 Il dit encore à la femme: Je multiplierai tes fatigues et tes grossesses; c’est dans la douleur que tu mettras au monde des enfants; tu seras sous la puissance de ton mari, et lui te dominera.
To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in sorrow you shall bring forth children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you.
17 Mais à Adam, il dit: Puisque tu as écouté la voix de ta femme, et que tu as mangé du fruit dont je t’avais défendu de manger, maudite sera la terre en ton œuvre; et c’est avec des labeurs que tu en tireras ta nourriture durant tous les jours de ta vie.
And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life;
18 Elle te produira des épines et des chardons: et tu mangeras l’herbe de la terre
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the herb of the field;
19 C’est à la sueur de ton front que tu te nourriras de pain, jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre, d’où tu as été tiré: puisque tu es poussière, tu retourneras à la poussière.
In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return to the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and to dust shall you return.
20 Adam donna à sa femme le nom d’Ève, parce qu’elle était la mère de tous les vivants.
And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Le Seigneur Dieu fit aussi à Adam et à sa femme des tuniques de peau, et les en revêtit.
To Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 Et il dit: Voilà qu’Adam est devenu comme l’un de nous, sachant le bien et le mal: maintenant donc, qu’il n’avance pas sa main; qu’il ne prenne pas non plus du fruit de l’arbre de vie; qu’il n’en mange point, et qu’il ne vive point éternellement.
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Et le Seigneur Dieu le renvoya du jardin de délices, afin qu’il labourât la terre, de laquelle il fut tiré.
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from where he was taken.
24 Il renvoya donc Adam, et il plaça à l’entrée du jardin de délices les Chérubins avec un glaive flamboyant qu’ils brandissaient, pour garder la voie de l’arbre de la vie.
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
