Genèse 24
1 Or Abraham était vieux et plein de jours; et le Seigneur l’avait béni en toutes choses.
And Abraham was old [and] far advanced in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
2 Et il dit au serviteur le plus ancien de sa maison, qui présidait sur tout ce qu’il avait: Pose ta main sous ma cuisse,
And Abraham said to his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
3 Afin que je t’adjure par le Seigneur Dieu du ciel et de la terre, que tu ne prendras pas de femme pour mon fils parmi les filles des Chananéens au milieu desquels j’habite;
And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell:
4 Mais que tu iras dans mon pays et dans ma parenté, et que c’est de là que tu prendras une femme pour mon fils Isaac.
But thou shalt go to my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.
5 Le serviteur répondit: Si la femme ne veut pas venir avec moi dans ce pays-ci, dois-je remener votre fils dans le lieu d’où vous êtes sorti?
And the servant said to him, It may be the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land: must I needs bring thy son again to the land from whence thou camest?
6 Et Abraham dit: Garde-toi de jamais y remener mon fils
And Abraham said to him, Beware that thou bring not my son thither again.
7 Le Seigneur Dieu du ciel qui m’a tiré de la maison de mon père et du pays de ma naissance, qui m’a parlée et m’a juré, disant: C’est à ta postérité que je donnerai ce pays, enverra lui-même son ange devant toi, et tu prendras de là une femme pour mon fils.
The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, To thy seed I will give this land: he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from thence.
8 Que si la femme ne veut pas te suivre, tu ne seras pas engagé par le serment; seulement ne remène jamais là mon fils.
And if the woman shall not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath; only bring not my son thither again.
9 Le serviteur donc posa la main sous la cuisse d’Abraham son maître, et il le lui jura.
And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.
10 C’est pourquoi il prit dix chameaux du troupeau de son maître, et s’en alla portant avec lui de tous ses biens; et étant parti, il se dirigea en Mésopotamie, vers la ville de Nachor.
And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; (for all the goods of his master [were] in his hands: ) and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
11 Et lorsqu’il eut fait agenouiller ses chameaux hors de la ville, près du puits, sur le soir, temps où les jeunes filles ont coutume de sortir pour puiser de l’eau, il dit:
And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water, at the time of the evening, the time when women go out to draw [water]:
12 Seigneur Dieu de mon maître Abraham, je vous supplie, venez-moi en aide aujourd’hui, et faites miséricorde à mon maître Abraham.
And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, prosper me this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
13 Me voici près de la source d’eau, et les filles des habitants de cette ville sortiront pour puiser de l’eau.
Behold, I stand [here] by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
14 Que la jeune fille donc à qui je dirai: Incline ta cruche, afin que je boive, et qui répondra: Bois, et je donnerai aussi à boire à tes chameaux, soit celle que vous avez préparée à votre serviteur Isaac: et c’est à cela que je connaîtrai que vous aurez fait miséricorde à mon maître.
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: [let the same be] she [that] thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and by that shall I know that thou hast shown kindness to my master.
15 Il n’avait pas encore achevé ces mots en lui-même, et voilà que sortit Rébecca, la fille de Bathuel, fils de Melcha, femme de Nachor, frère d’Abraham, laquelle portait une cruche sur son épaule;
And it came to pass before he had done speaking, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 Jeune fille fort gracieuse, vierge très belle et inconnue à tout homme: or elle était déjà descendue à la fontaine, avait rempli sa cruche, et elle s’en retournait.
And the damsel [was] very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
17 Aussitôt le serviteur courut au-devant d’elle, et dit: Donne-moi un peu d’eau à boire de ta cruche.
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water from thy pitcher.
18 Elle répondit: Bois, mon seigneur; et elle posa promptement sa cruche sur son bras, et elle lui donna à boire.
And she said, Drink, my lord. And she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
19 Et lorsqu’il eut bu, elle ajouta: Et même pour tes chameaux je puiserai de l’eau, jusqu’à ce que tous aient bu.
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw [water] for thy camels also, till they have done drinking.
20 Et versant sa cruche dans les canaux, elle courut au puits pour puiser de l’eau, et quand elle l’eut puisée, elle la donna à tous les chameaux.
And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw [water], and drew for all his camels.
21 Cependant lui la contemplait en silence, voulant savoir si le Seigneur avait rendu son voyage heureux ou non.
And the man, wondering at her, held his peace, to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous, or not.
22 Or, après que les chameaux eurent bu, cet homme lui présenta des pendants d’oreilles d’or, pesant deux sicles, et autant de bracelets du poids de dix sicles.
And it came to pass as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ear-ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten [shekels] weight of gold;
23 Puis il dit: De qui es-tu fille? dis-le moi: y a-t-il dans la maison de ton père un lieu pour y loger?
And said, Whose daughter [art] thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room [in] thy father's house for us to lodge in?
24 Elle répondit: Je suis la fille de Bathuel, fils de Melcha et que lui a engendré Nachor.
And she said to him, I [am] the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
25 Et elle ajouta, disant: Il y a chez nous beaucoup de foin et de paille, et un lieu spacieux pour y loger.
She said moreover to him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
26 L’homme s’inclina, et adora le Seigneur,
And the man bowed his head, and worshipped the LORD.
27 Disant: Béni le Seigneur Dieu de mon maître Abraham, qui ne lui a pas retiré sa miséricorde et sa fidélité, et qui m’a conduit par une voie droite dans la maison du frère de mon maître!
And he said, Blessed [be] the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left my master destitute of his mercy and his truth: I [being] in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.
28 C’est pourquoi la jeune fille courut et annonça à la maison de sa mère tout ce qu’elle avait entendu.
And the damsel ran, and told these things to her mother's house.
29 Or Rébecca avait un frère du nom de Laban, qui sortit en grande hâte pour aller vers l’homme là où était la fontaine.
And Rebekah had a brother, and his name [was] Laban: and Laban ran out to the man, to the well.
30 Et, comme il avait vu les pendants d’oreilles et les bracelets aux mains de sa sœur, et qu’il avait entendu toutes ses paroles, lorsqu’elle disait: Ainsi m’a parlé cet homme, il vint vers l’homme, qui se tenait à côté de ses chameaux et près de la source d’eau.
And it came to pass when he saw the ear-ring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spoke the man to me; that he came to the man; and behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
31 Et il lui dit: Entre, béni du Seigneur; pourquoi restes-tu dehors? J’ai préparé la maison et un lieu pour tes chameaux.
And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
32 Puis il le fit entrer dans le logis, dessangla les chameaux, leur donna de la paille et du foin, et à lui-même et à ceux qui étaient venus avec lui, de l’eau pour laver leurs pieds.
And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that [were] with him.
33 On mit aussi du pain en sa présence. Il dit: Je ne mangerai pas que je ne vous aie énoncé mon message. Laban lui répondit: Parle.
And there was set [food] before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on.
34 Alors lui: Je suis, dit-il, serviteur d’Abraham.
And he said, I [am] Abraham's servant.
35 Le Seigneur a béni beaucoup mon maître, et il est devenu grand; car il lui a donné des brebis et des bœufs, de l’argent et de l’or, des serviteurs et des servantes, des chameaux et des ânes.
And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly, and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses.
36 Et Sara la femme de mon maître lui a enfanté un fils dans sa vieillesse, et il lui a donné tout ce qu’il avait.
And Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master when she was old: and to him hath he given all that he hath.
37 Et mon maître m’a adjuré, disant: Tu ne prendras point de femme pour mon fils parmi les filles des Chananéens dans le pays desquels j’habite;
And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
38 Mais tu iras à la maison de mon père, et tu prendras dans ma parenté une femme pour mon fils.
But thou shalt go to my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.
39 Et moi j’ai répondu à mon maître: Mais si la femme ne veut pas venir avec moi?
And I said to my master, It may be the woman will not follow me.
40 Le Seigneur, reprit-il, en présence de qui je marche, enverra son ange avec toi, et dirigera ta voie; et tu prendras une femme pour mon fils dans ma parenté et de la maison de mon père.
And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house.
41 Tu seras exempt de ma malédiction, si tu vas vers mes parents et qu’ils te refusent.
Then shalt thou be clear from [this] my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee [one], thou shalt be clear from my oath.
42 Je suis donc venu aujourd’hui près de la source d’eau, et j’ai dit: Seigneur Dieu de mon maître Abraham, si vous avez dirigé la voie dans laquelle je marche maintenant,
And I came this day to the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou dost prosper my way which I go:
43 Me voici près de la source d’eau; que la vierge donc qui sortira pour puiser de l’eau, qui entendra de moi: Donne-moi un peu d’eau à boire de ta cruche,
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw [water], and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;
44 Et qui me répondra: Bois, toi; je puiserai ensuite de l’eau pour tes chameaux, soit la femme que le Seigneur a préparée au fils de mon maître.
And she saith to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: [let] the same [be] the woman whom the LORD hath pointed out for my master's son.
45 Pendant que sans rien dire, j’agitais ces pensées au-dedans de moi-même, parut Rébecca venant avec sa cruche qu’elle portait sur l’épaule: elle descendit à la fontaine et puisa de l’eau. Et je lui dis: Donne-moi un peu à boire.
And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well, and drew [water]: and I said to her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
46 Elle se hâtant, descendit sa cruche de dessus son épaule et me dit: Bois, toi; je donnerai ensuite à boire à tes chameaux. Je bus, et elle abreuva les chameaux.
And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her [shoulder], and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.
47 Je l’interrogeai alors, et je dis: De qui es-tu fille? Elle répondit: Je suis fille de Bathuel, fils de Nachor, que lui a enfanté Melcha. Je lui ai donc mis les pendants d’oreilles pour orner son visage, et j’ai attaché les bracelets à ses bras.
And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter [art] thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him: and I put the ear-ring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
48 Et incliné, j’ai adoré le Seigneur, bénissant le Seigneur Dieu de mon maître Abraham, qui m’a conduit par une voie droite, afin de prendre la fille du frère de mon maître pour son fils.
And I bowed my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son.
49 C’est pourquoi, si vous agissez avec miséricorde et loyauté envers mon maître, dites-le-moi; mais si autre chose vous plaît, dites-le-moi encore; afin que j’aille à droite ou à gauche.
And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
50 Laban et Bathuel répondirent: C’est du Seigneur qu’est sortie cette parole; nous ne pouvons en dehors de sa volonté, te dire rien autre chose.
Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak to thee bad or good.
51 Voici Rébecca devant toi: prends-la, pars, et qu’elle soit la femme du fils de ton maître, selon qu’a parlé le Seigneur.
Behold, Rebekah [is] before thee, take [her], and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
52 Ce qu’ayant entendu le serviteur d’Abraham, se prosternant en terre, il adora le Seigneur.
And it came to pass, that when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, [bowing himself] to the earth.
53 Puis, tirant des vases d’or et d’argent, et des vêtements, il les donna à Rébecca en présent; et à ses frères et à sa mère, il offrit aussi des dons.
And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave [them] to Rebekah: He gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
54 Le repas commencé, mangeant ensemble et buvant, ils demeurèrent là. Mais se levant le matin, le serviteur dit: Laissez-moi partir, afin que j’aille vers mon maître.
And they ate and drank, he and the men that [were] with him, and tarried all night; and they rose in the morning, and he said, Send me away to my master.
55 Les frères de Rébecca et sa mère répondirent: Que la jeune fille demeure au moins dix jours auprès de nous, et ensuite elle partira.
And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us [a few] days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
56 Ne me retenez pas, reprit-il, puisque le Seigneur a dirigé ma voie: laissez-moi partir, afin que j’aille vers mon maître.
And he said to them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way: send me away, that I may go to my master.
57 Et ils dirent: Appelons la jeune fille, et demandons-lui ce qu’elle veut.
And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth.
58 Lorsque appelée, elle fut venue, ils lui demandèrent: Veux-tu aller avec cet homme? Elle dit: J’irai.
And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
59 Ils renvoyèrent donc, elle, sa nourrice, le serviteur d’Abraham et ses compagnons.
And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
60 Implorant des choses heureuses pour leur sœur, et disant: Tu es notre sœur; puisses-tu croître en mille et mille générations, et puisse ta postérité posséder les portes de ses ennemis!
And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, Thou [art] our sister, be thou [the mother] of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those who hate them.
61 Ainsi Rébecca et ses servantes étant montées sur les chameaux, suivirent le serviteur qui en grande hâte retournait vers son maître.
And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62 En ce même temps se promenait Isaac dans le chemin qui mène au puits dont le nom est puits Du vivant et voyant; car il habitait dans la terre australe.
And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country.
63 Et il était sorti pour méditer dans la campagne, le jour étant déjà sur son déclin: et comme il avait levé les yeux, il vit les chameaux venant de loin.
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at evening: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and behold, the camels [were] coming.
64 Rébecca aussi, Isaac aperçu, descendit de son chameau,
And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel.
65 Et dit au serviteur: Quel est cet homme qui vient par la campagne, à notre rencontre? Et il lui dit: C’est mon maître. Et elle, prenant aussitôt son voile, se couvrit.
For she [had] said to the servant, What man [is] this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant [had] said, It [is] my master: therefore she took a vail and covered herself.
66 Or le serviteur raconta tout ce qu’il avait fait, à Isaac,
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
67 Qui conduisit Rébecca dans la tente de Sara sa mère, et la reçut pour femme: et il l’aima tellement, qu’il tempéra la douleur qu’il avait eue de la mort de sa mère.
And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's [death].
