Genèse 19
1 Cependant les deux Anges vinrent à Sodome vers le soir, et Lot étant assis à la porte de la ville. Dès qu’il les eut vus, il se leva et alla au-devant d’eux, et se prosterna, incliné vers la terre.
And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom; and when Lot saw them he rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face to the ground.
2 Et il dit: Je vous conjure, seigneurs, venez dans la maison de votre serviteur, et demeurez-y; lavez vos pieds, et dès le matin vous continuerez votre route. Ils répondirent: Point du tout; mais c’est sur la place que nous demeurerons.
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye can rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 Mais il les força par ses instances de venir chez lui; et lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans sa maison, il leur prépara un repas, et il fit cuire des azymes; et ils mangèrent.
And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they did eat.
4 Mais avant qu’ils allassent se coucher, les hommes de la ville environnèrent la maison, depuis l’enfant jusqu’au vieillard, tout le peuple ensemble.
But before they had lain down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 Et ils appelèrent Lot et lui dirent: Où sont les hommes qui sont entrés chez toi cette nuit? Amène-les ici, afin que nous les connaissions.
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men who came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 Lot étant sorti vers eux, et ayant fermé derrière lui la porte, dit:
And Lot went out unto them, at the entrance [of the house], and shut the door after him.
7 Ne faites pas, je vous prie, mes frères, ne faites pas ce mal.
And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not act wickedly.
8 J’ai deux filles qui n’ont pas encore connu d’hommes: je vous les amènerai, et vous ferez d’elles ce qui vous plaira, pourvu qu’à ces hommes vous ne fassiez aucun mal; car ils sont venus à l’ombre de mon toit.
Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes, only unto these men do nothing, since they have once come under the shadow of my roof.
9 Mais ils répondirent: Retire-toi d’ici. Et de nouveau: Tu es venu ici, dirent-ils, comme étranger; est-ce pour t’ériger en juge. C’est donc toi-même que nous maltraiterons plus qu’eux. Et ils faisaient à Lot la plus grande violence; et déjà ils étaient près d’enfoncer la porte.
And they said, Stand back. And they said, This one man came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge; now will we deal worse with thee than with them. And they pressed sorely upon the man Lot, and they came near to break the door.
10 Mais voilà que les hommes avancèrent la main, firent rentrer Lot auprès d’eux et fermèrent la porte;
But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot to them into the house, and the door they locked.
11 Et ceux qui étaient dehors, ils les frappèrent d’aveuglement, depuis le plus petit Jusqu’au plus grand, en sorte qu’ils ne pouvaient retrouver la porte.
And the men that were at the entrance of the house they smote with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the entrance.
12 Alors ils dirent à Lot: As-tu ici quelqu’un des tiens, un gendre, ou des fils, ou des filles? tous ceux qui sont à toi, fais-les sortir de cette ville;
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? a son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring out of this place.
13 Car nous détruirons ce lieu, parce que leur clameur s’est élevée de plus en plus devant le Seigneur qui nous a envoyés pour les perdre.
For we will destroy this place, because the cry against them is waxed great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.
14 Lot étant donc sorti, parla à ses gendres, qui devaient épouser ses filles, et dit: Levez-vous, sortez de ce lieu; parce que le Seigneur détruira cette ville. Et il leur sembla parler comme en se jouant.
And Lot went out and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, Arise, get yourselves out of this place, for the Lord will destroy this city; but he seemed as one that jesteth in the eyes of his sons-in-law.
15 Mais lorsqu’il fut matin, les Anges le pressaient, disant: Lève-toi, prends ta femme, et les deux filles que tu as, afin que tu ne périsses pas, toi aussi, dans le châtiment de la ville.
And as the morning dawn arose, the angels urged Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters that are here, lest thou be consumed for the iniquity of the city.
16 Mais lui différant, ils prirent sa main et la main de sa femme et de ses deux filles, parce que le Seigneur lui faisait grâce.
And while he yet lingered, the men laid hold of his hand, and of the hand of his wife, and of the hand of his two daughters, because the Lord desired to spare him; and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
17 Et ils l’emmenèrent, le mirent hors de la ville: et là, ils lui parlèrent, disant: Sauve ton âme; ne regarde point derrière toi, et ne t’arrête dans aucune contrée d’alentour; mais sauve-toi sur la montagne, de peur que tu ne périsses toi aussi avec les autres.
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life, look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
18 Et Lot leur répondit: Je vous prie, mon Seigneur,
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my lord!
19 Puisque votre serviteur a trouvé grâce devant vous et que vous avez signalé la miséricorde que vous m’avez faite, pour sauver mon âme, non, je ne puis être sauvé sur la montagne; il est à craindre que le mal ne m’atteigne, et que je ne meure.
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy eyes, and thou hast magnified thy kindness, which thou hast showed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest the evil overtake me, and I die.
20 Cette ville ici près, où je puis m’enfuir, est petite et j’y serai sauvé; n’est-elle pas de peu d’étendue? et mon âme n’y vivra-t-elle pas?
Behold now, this city is near to flee thereunto, and it is little; oh, let me, I pray thee, escape thither, [as it is but little, ] that my life may be saved.
21 Et il lui répondit: Voici que même en cela, j’ai accueilli ta prière, de ne pas détruire la ville pour laquelle tu m’as parlé.
And he said unto him, See, I have favored thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, of which thou hast spoken.
22 Hâte-toi, et tu y seras sauvé; car je ne pourrai rien faire jusqu’à ce que tu y sois entré. C’est pourquoi cette ville fut appelée du nom de Ségor.
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou hast come thither. Therefore was the name of the city called Zoar.
23 Le soleil se leva sur la terre, et Lot entra dans Ségor.
The sun rose over the earth, when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Le Seigneur donc fit pleuvoir sur Sodome et Gomorrhe du soufre et du feu venus du ciel d’auprès du Seigneur;
And the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire, from the Lord, out of heaven;
25 Et il détruisit ces villes, et toute la contrée d’alentour, et tous les habitants des villes, et toutes les plantes de la terre.
And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 Et la femme de Lot, regardant derrière elle, fut changée en une statue de sel.
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27 Or Abraham se levant le matin, et venant où il avait été auparavant avec le Seigneur,
And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord:
28 Regarda Sodome et Gomorrhe, et toute la terre de cette contrée, et il vit une fumée qui montait de la terre, comme la fumée d’une fournaise.
And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo, smoke went up from the earth as the smoke of a furnace.
29 Mais, lorsque le Seigneur détruisait les villes de cette contrée, s’étant souvenu d’Abraham, il sauva Lot de la ruine de ces villes dans lesquelles il avait habité.
And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot away out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.
30 Et Lot sortit de Ségor; il se retira sur la montagne, et ses deux filles avec lui (car il craignait de demeurer dans Ségor), et il demeura dans la caverne, lui et ses deux filles avec lui.
And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he, and his two daughters.
31 Or l’aînée dit à la plus jeune: Notre père est vieux, et il n’est resté sur la terre aucun homme qui puisse nous épouser selon la coutume de toute la terre.
And the first-born said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the country to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
32 Viens, et enivrons-le de vin, et dormons avec lui, afin que nous puissions par notre père conserver une postérité.
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 Elles donnèrent donc à leur père du vin à boire cette nuit-là; et l’aînée vint et dormit avec son père; mais celui-ci ne s’aperçut, ni quand sa fille se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
And they made their father drink wine that night; and the first-born went in, and lay with her father, and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
34 Et le lendemain, l’aînée dit à la plus jeune: Voilà que j’ai dormi hier avec mon père; donnons-lui à boire du vin encore cette nuit, et tu dormiras avec lui, afin que nous conservions une postérité de notre père.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father; let us make him drink wine this night also, and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
35 Et elles donnèrent encore cette nuit-là à leur père du vin à boire; et la plus jeune fille dormit avec lui; et encore cette fois, il ne s’aperçut pas quand elle se coucha, ou quand elle se leva.
And they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him, and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
36 Ainsi les deux filles de Lot conçurent de leur père.
And both the daughters of Lot became with child by their father.
37 L’aînée enfanta un fils, et l’appela du nom de Moab; c’est le père des Moabites, jusqu’au présent jour.
And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
38 La plus jeune aussi enfanta un fils, et l’appela du nom d’Ammon, c’est-à-dire le fils de mon peuple; c’est le père des Ammonites, jusqu’aujourd’hui.
And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
