Galates 2
1 Quatorze ans après, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabé, ayant pris Tite aussi avec moi.
Then fourteen years after I went again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with [me] also.
2 Or, j’y montai d’après une révélation; et j’exposai aux fidèles l’Evangile que je prêche parmi les gentils, et en particulier à ceux qui paraissent être quelque chose, de peur que je ne courusse, ou n’eusse couru en vain.
And I went by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them who were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run in vain.
3 Mais Tite, qui m’accompagnait, étant gentil, ne fut pas forcé de se faire circoncire;
But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
4 Et la considération de quelques faux frères, qui s’étaient furtivement introduits pour observer la liberté que nous avons dans le Christ Jésus, et nous réduire en servitude,
And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privately to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
5 Ne nous fit pas consentir, même un seul instant, à nous soumettre à eux, afin que la vérité de l’Evangile demeurât parmi nous.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6 Mais quant à ceux qui paraissaient être quelque chose (quels ils furent autrefois, peu m’importe, Dieu ne fait point acception de la personne de l’homme); ceux, dis-je, qui paraissaient être quelque chose, ne me communiquèrent rien.
But of these, who seemed to be somewhat, (whatever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person: ) for they who seemed [to be somewhat], in conference added nothing to me:
7 Au contraire, ayant vu que l’Evangile de l’incirconcision m’avait été confié, comme à Pierre celui de la circoncision
But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed to me, as [the gospel] of the circumcision [was] to Peter;
8 (Car celui qui a opéré en Pierre pour l’apostolat de la circoncision, a opéré en moi aussi parmi les gentils);
(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me towards the Gentiles: )
9 Et ayant connu la grâce qui m’a été donnée, Jacques, et Céphas, et Jean, qui paraissaient être les colonnes, nous donnèrent la main, à moi et à Barnabé, en signe de communion; afin que nous prêchassions, nous, aux gentils, et eux aux circoncis.
And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we [should go] to the heathen, and they to the circumcision.
10 Seulement, nous devions nous ressouvenir des pauvres: ce que j’ai eu aussi grand soin de faire.
Only [they would] that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
11 Or Céphas étant venu à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu’il était répréhensible.
But when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
12 Car avant que quelques-uns, envoyés par Jacques, fussent arrivés, il mangeait avec les gentils; mais quand ils furent venus, il se retirait et se séparait, craignant ceux qui étaient circoncis.
For before that certain came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles: but when they had come, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing them who were of the circumcision.
13 Et, à sa dissimulation, acquiescèrent les autres Juifs; de sorte que Barnabé lui-même fut entraîné dans cette dissimulation.
And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; so that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
14 Mais quand je vis qu’ils ne marchaient pas droit selon la vérité de l’Evangile, je dis à Céphas devant tous: Si toi, étant Juif, tu vis à la manière des gentils et non en Juif, comment forces-tu les gentils à judaïser?
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before [them] all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
15 Nous, de naissance nous sommes Juifs, et non pécheurs d’entre les gentils.
We [who are] Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,
16 Sachant que l’homme n’est point justifié par les œuvres de la loi, mais par la foi en Jésus-Christ, nous croyons nous-mêmes au Christ Jésus pour être justifiés par la foi du Christ, et non par les œuvres de la loi, attendu que par les œuvres de la loi ne sera justifiée nulle chair.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
17 Que si, cherchant à être justifiés dans le Christ, nous sommes nous-mêmes trouvés pécheurs, le Christ n’est-il pas ministre du péché? Nullement.
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, [is] therefore Christ the minister of sin? By no means.
18 Car si ce que j’ai détruit je le rétablis, je me constitue moi-même prévaricateur.
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
19 En effet, moi-même par la loi je suis mort à la loi, afin de vivre pour Dieu avec le Christ: j’ai été cloué à la croix.
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I may live to God.
20 Mais je vis, non plus moi, mais le Christ vit en moi. Car si je vis maintenant dans la chair, j’y vis en la foi du Fils de Dieu, qui m’a aimé, et s’est lui-même livré pour moi.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
21 Je ne regrette point la grâce de Dieu; car si c’est par la loi qu’est la justice, c’est donc en vain que le Christ est mort.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness is [attainable] by the law, then Christ hath died in vain.
