Esdras 9
1 Et, après que ces choses furent accomplies, les princes s’approchèrent de moi, disant: Le roi d’Israël, les prêtres et les Lévites, ne sont pas séparés des peuples de la terre et de leurs abominations, c’est-à-dire du Chananéen, de l’Héthéen, du Phérézéen, du Jébuséen, de l’Ammonite, du Moabite, de l’Egyptien et de l’Amorrhéen;
Now, when these things were ended, the rulers drew near unto me, saying, The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not kept themselves separate from the peoples of the lands, —in view of their abominations-even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites;
2 Car ils ont pris de leurs filles pour eux et pour leurs fils, et ils ont mêlé la race sainte avec les peuples de la terre; la main même des princes et des magistrats a été la première dans cette transgression.
for they have taken of their daughters, for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have intermingled themselves among the peoples of the lands, —and, the hand of the rulers and the deputies, hath, in this unfaithfulness, been, foremost.
3 Et quand j’eus ouï cette parole, je déchirai mon manteau et ma tunique, et j’arrachai les cheveux de ma tête et ma barbe, et je m’assis, abattu de chagrin.
When I heard this thing, I rent my garment, and my robe, —and tore out of the hair of my head and my beard, and sat stunned.
4 Alors s’assemblèrent auprès de moi tous ceux qui craignaient la parole du Dieu d’Israël, à cause de la transgression de ceux qui étaient venus de la captivité, et j’étais assis triste jusqu’au sacrifice du soir.
Then, unto me, were gathered, all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, concerning the unfaithfulness of them who had been exiled, —but, I, sat stunned, until the evening gift.
5 Et, au sacrifice du soir, je me levai de mon affliction; et mon manteau et ma tunique déchirés, je courbai mes genoux et j’étendis mes mains vers le Seigneur mon Dieu.
And, at the evening gift, I arose from mine affliction, which had been accompanied by the rending of my garment and my robe, —and I bowed upon my knees, and spread forth my hands unto Yahweh my God;
6 Et je dis: Mon Dieu, je suis confondu, et je rougis de lever ma face vers vous; parce que nos iniquités se sont multipliées sur notre tête, et nos péchés se sont accrus jusqu’au ciel,
and said, O my God, I turn pale and am ashamed, to lift up, O my God, my face unto thee, —for, our iniquities, have multiplied above the head, and our guilt hath magnified itself unto the heavens.
7 Depuis les jours de nos pères; mais aussi nous-mêmes nous avons péché grièvement jusqu’à ce jour, et à cause de nos iniquités, nous avons été livrés, nous, nos rois et nos prêtres, à la main des rois de la terre, au glaive, et à la captivité, au pillage, à la confusion de notre visage, comme on le voit encore en ce jour.
Since the days of our fathers, we, have been in great guilt, until this day, —and, for our iniquities, have we been given up—we, our kings, our priests, —into the hand of the kings of the lands, by sword and by captivity and by spoiling and by a turning pale of face, as at this day.
8 Mais maintenant notre prière s’est un peu et pour un moment élevée vers le Seigneur notre Dieu, afin qu’un reste nous fût laissé, qu’un pieu nous fût donné en son saint lieu, que notre Dieu éclairât nos yeux, et qu’il nous donnât un peu de vie dans notre servitude,
And, now, for a very little moment, hath come favour from Yahweh our God, in leaving to us a remnant to escape, and in giving to us a nail in his holy place, —that our God may enlighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
9 Parce que nous sommes esclaves, et qu’en notre servitude noire Dieu ne nous a point délaissés; mais il a incliné sur nous sa miséricorde devant le roi des Perses, pour nous donner la vie, élever la maison de notre Dieu, construire ses solitudes, et pour nous donner une haie dans Juda et Jérusalem.
For, bondmen, we are, but, in our bondage, hath our God not forsaken us, —but extended unto us lovingkindness before the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up on high the house of our God, to raise up the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
10 Et maintenant, notre Dieu, que dirons-nous après cela? Puisque nous avons abandonné les commandements
But, now, what can we say, O our God, after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,
11 Que vous nous avez prescrits par l’entremise de vos serviteurs les prophètes, disant: La terre dans laquelle vous entrez pour la posséder, est une terre impure, selon l’impureté des peuples et des autres terres, à cause des abominations de ceux qui l’ont remplie, d’une extrémité jusqu’à l’autre extrémité, de leur souillure.
which thou didst command by the hand of thy servants the prophets, saying, As for the land which, ye, are entering to possess, an impure land, it is, with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, —with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to the other, with their uncleanness.
12 Maintenant donc ne donnez point vos filles à leurs fils, et n’acceptez point leurs filles pour vos fils, et ne cherchez jamais leur paix et leur prospérité; afin que vous soyez forts, et que vous mangiez les biens de cette terre, et que vous ayez vos fils pour héritiers à jamais.
Now, therefore, your daughters, do not ye give to their sons, and, their daughters, do not ye take for your sons, neither shall ye seek their prosperity nor their pleasure unto times age-abiding, —to the end ye may become strong, and may eat the good of the land, and may suffer your children to possess it, unto times age-abiding.
13 Et après tout ce qui est venu sur nous, à cause de nos œuvres très mauvaises et de notre grand péché, vous, Seigneur notre Dieu, vous nous avez délivrés de notre iniquité, et vous nous avez donné le salut comme on le voit aujourd’hui,
And, after all that hath come upon us, for our wicked doings, and for our great guilt—For, thou, O our God, hast spared us, punishing us less than our iniquities deserved, and hast given us a deliverance such as this,
14 Afin que nous ne revinssions pas à rendre vains vos commandements, et que nous ne nous unissions point par les mariages avec les peuples livrés à ces abominations. Etes-vous irrité entièrement contre nous, en sorte que vous ne laissiez point des restes de nous pour notre conservation?
should we again break thy commandments and join ourselves by affinity of marriage with the peoples of these abominations, —wouldst thou not be angry with us, unto a full end, that there should be neither remainder nor deliverance?
15 Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, vous êtes juste, puisque nous avons été laissés pour être sauvés, comme on le voit en ce jour. Voici que nous sommes devant vous dans notre péché; car on ne peut pas subsister devant vous après cela.
O Yahweh, God of Israel, righteous thou art, for we have had left us a deliverance as at this day, —here we are, before thee, in our guilty deeds, for there is no standing before thee, because of this thing!
