Esdras 5
1 Or Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Addo, prophétisèrent, prophétisant aux Juifs qui étaient en Judée et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël.
And Aggaeus the prophet, and Zacharias the [son] of Addo, prophesied a prophesy to the Jews in Juda and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, [even] to them.
2 Alors se levèrent Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, et Josué, fils de Josédec, et ils commencèrent à bâtir le temple de Dieu à Jérusalem, et avec eux les prophètes de Dieu qui les aidaient.
Then rose up Zorobabel the [son] of Salathiel, and Jesus the son of Josedec, and began to build the house of God that was in Jerusalem: and with them [were] the prophets of God assisting them.
3 Or, en ce temps-là, vinrent vers eux Thathanaï, qui était chef au-delà du fleuve, et Stharbuzanaï, et leurs conseillers, et c’est ainsi qu’ils leur dirent: Qui vous a donné le conseil de bâtir cette maison et de restaurer ses murs?
At the same time came there upon them Thanthanai, the governor on this side the river, and Satharbuzanai, and their fellow-servants, and spoke thus to them, Who has ordained a decree for you to build this house, and to [provide] this preparation?
4 À quoi nous répondîmes en leur disant quels étaient les noms des hommes auteurs de cette construction.
Then they spoke thus to them, What are the names of the men that build this city?
5 Or l’œil de leur Dieu fut sur les anciens des Juifs, et ils ne purent les empêcher. Et il leur plut que l’affaire fût renvoyée à Darius, et qu’alors ils répondraient à cette accusation.
But the eyes of God were upon the captivity of Juda, and they did not cause them to cease till the decree was brought to Darius; and then was sent by the tribute-gatherer concerning this
6 Copie de la lettre que Thathanaï, chef de la contrée au-delà du fleuve, et Stharbuzanaï et ses conseillers Arphasachéens, qui étaient au-delà du fleuve, envoyèrent à Darius, le roi.
the copy of a letter, which Thanthanai, the governor of the part on this side the river, and Satharbuzanai, and their fellow-servants the Apharsachaeans who were on this side of the river, sent to king Darius.
7 La parole qu’ils lui avaient envoyée était écrite ainsi: À Darius, le roi, toute paix.
They sent an account to him, and thus it was written in it: All peace to king Darius.
8 Qu’il soit connu du roi que nous sommes allés dans la province de Judée, dans la maison du grand Dieu que l’on bâtit de pierres non polies et dont on pose les bois sur les murailles. Or cet ouvrage s’élève avec diligence et s’accroît entre leurs mains.
Be it known to the king, that we went into the land of Judea, to the house of the great God; and it is building with choice stones, and they are laying timbers in the walls, and that work is prospering, and goes on favorably in their hands.
9 Nous avons donc interrogé les vieillards, et c’est ainsi que nous leur avons dit: Qui vous a donné le pouvoir de bâtir cette maison et de rétablir ces murs?
Then we asked those elders, and thus we said to them, Who gave you the order to build this house, and to [provide] this preparation?
10 Mais nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms, afin de vous les indiquer, et nous avons écrit les noms des hommes qui sont les princes parmi eux.
And we asked them their names, [in order] to declare [them] to thee, so as to write to thee the names of their leading men.
11 Or ils nous ont répondu ces paroles, disant: Nous sommes serviteurs du Dieu du ciel et de la terre; nous bâtissons le temple qui était construit beaucoup d’années avant celles-ci, et que le grand roi d’Israël avait bâti et construit.
And they answered us thus, saying, We [are] the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we [are] building the house which had been built many years before this, and a great king of Israel built it, and established it for them.
12 Mais après que nos pères eurent provoqué au courroux le Dieu au ciel, il les livra entre les mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, Chaldéen; et il détruisit même cette maison, et transporta son peuple à Babylone.
But after that our fathers provoked the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nabuchodonosor the Chaldean, king of Babylon, and he destroyed this house, and carried the people captive to Babylon.
13 Or, à la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus publia un édit afin que cette maison de Dieu fût bâtie.
And in the first year of king Cyrus, Cyrus the king made a decree that this house of God should be built.
14 Et même les vases d’or et d’argent du temple de Dieu, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés du temple qui était à Jérusalem, et qu’il avait apportés dans le temple de Babylone, le roi Cyrus les tira du temple de Babylone, et ils furent donnés à un nommé Sassabasar, qu’il établit même prince.
And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nabuchodonosor brought out from the house that was in Jerusalem, and carried them into the temple of the king, them did king Cyrus bring out from the temple of the king, and gave them to Sabanasar the treasurer, who was over the treasurer;
15 Et il lui dit: Prends ces vases, et va, et mets-les dans le temple qui est à Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit bâtie en son lieu.
and said to him, Take all the vessels, and go, put them in the house that is in Jerusalem in their place.
16 Alors donc ce Sassabasar vint, et posa les fondements du temple de Dieu à Jérusalem, et, depuis ce temps-là jusqu’à présent, on le bâtit, et il n’est pas encore achevé.
Then that Sabanazar came, and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem: and from that time even until now it has been building, and has not been finished.
17 Maintenant donc, s’il semble bon au roi, qu’il recherche dans la bibliothèque du roi, qui est à Babylone, s’il a été ordonné par le roi Cyrus que la maison de Dieu serait rebâtie à Jérusalem, et qu’il nous envoie la volonté du roi sur cela.
And now, if it [seem] good to the king, lest search be made in the treasure-house of the king at Babylon, that thou mayest know [if it be] that a decree was made by king Cyrus to build that house of God that was in Jerusalem, and let the king send to us when he has learnt concerning this [matter].
