Esdras 4
1 Or les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants de la captivité bâtissaient un temple au Seigneur Dieu d’Israël:
Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
2 Et s’approchant de Zorobabel et des princes des pères, ils leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous, parce que, comme vous, nous cherchons votre Dieu: voilà que nous, nous avons immolé des victimes depuis les jours d’Asor-Haddan, roi d’Assur, qui nous amena ici.
Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye [do; ] and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3 Zorobabel leur répondit, ainsi que Josué et tous les autres princes des pères d’Israël: Ce n’est pas à vous et à nous de bâtir ensemble une maison à notre Dieu; mais nous seuls nous bâtirons au Seigneur notre Dieu, comme nous l’a ordonné Cyrus, roi des Perses.
But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4 Il arriva donc que le peuple du pays empêchait les mains du peuple de Juda, et le troublait pendant qu’il bâtissait.
Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5 Ensuite on gagna contre eux des conseillers, pour détruire leur dessein durant les jours de Cyrus, roi des Perses, et jusqu’au règne de Darius, roi des Perses.
And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 Or, sous le règne d’Assuérus, et au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem;
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they [unto him] an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 Et aux jours d’Artaxerxès, Bésélam-Mithridate et Thabéel et les autres qui étaient dans leur conseil, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi des Perses: or la lettre d’accusation était écrite en syriaque, et on la lisait en la langue de Syrie.
And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter [was] written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8 Réum-Béeltéem et Samsaï, le scribe, écrivirent une lettre de Jérusalem au roi Artaxerxès, en ces termes:
Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9 Réum-Béeltéem et Samsaï, le scribe, et leurs autres conseillers, Dinéens, Apharsathachéens, Therphaléens, Apharséens, Erchuéens, Babyloniens, Susanéchéens, Diévéens, et Elamites,
Then [wrote] Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, [and] the Elamites,
10 Et tous les autres des nations qu’a transportées Asénaphar, le grand et le glorieux, et qu’il a fait habiter en paix dans les villes de Samarie et dans les autres contrées au-delà du fleuve.
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest [that are] on this side the river, and at such a time.
11 (Voici la copie de la lettre qu’ils lui envoyèrent): À Artaxerxès roi, vos serviteurs, les hommes qui sont au-delà du fleuve, disent salut.
This [is] the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, [even] unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12 Qu’il soit connu du roi que les Juifs qui sont montés de chez vous vers nous, sont venus à Jérusalem, ville rebelle et très méchante, qu’ils bâtissent, construisant ses murs et rétablissant les maisons.
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls [thereof], and joined the foundations.
13 Maintenant donc, qu’il soit connu du roi que si cette ville est bâtie et ses murs restaurés, ils ne payeront ni tribut, ni impôt, ni revenus annuels; et cette perte retombera jusque sur le roi.
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up [again, then] will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and [so] thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14 Or, nous souvenant du sel que nous avons mangé dans le palais, et parce que nous regardons comme un crime les offenses faites au roi, c’est pourquoi nous avons envoyé, et nous avons averti le roi,
Now because we have maintenance from [the king’s] palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15 Afin que vous regardiez dans les livres des histoires de vos pères; car vous trouverez écrit dans les annales, et vous apprendrez que cette ville est une ville rebelle et funeste aux rois et aux provinces, et que des guerres sont fomentées en elle depuis les jours anciens: c’est pourquoi la cité elle-même a été détruite.
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city [is] a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16 Nous annonçons donc au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et ses murs restaurés, vous n’aurez pas de possession au-delà du fleuve.
We certify the king that, if this city be builded [again], and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17 Le roi envoya une réponse à Réum-Béeltéem, et à Samsaï, le scribe, aux autres habitants de Samarie qui étaient dans leur conseil, et à tous ceux d’au-delà du fleuve, disant salut et paix.
[Then] sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and [to] Shimshai the scribe, and [to] the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and [unto] the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18 L’accusation que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue clairement devant moi,
The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19 Et il a été ordonné par moi, et on a examiné, et on a trouvé que cette ville, depuis les jours anciens, se révolte contre les rois, et que les séditions et les guerres sont fomentées en elle;
And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and [that] rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20 Car il y a eu aussi des rois très puissants à Jérusalem, qui ont même dominé sur toute la contrée qui est au-delà du fleuve; ils recevaient un tribut, un impôt et des revenus.
There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all [countries] beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21 Maintenant donc, écoutez ma décision: Empêchez ces hommes, afin que cette ville ne soit pas bâtie, jusqu’à ce que cela ait été commandé par moi.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until [another] commandment shall be given from me.
22 Prenez garde de remplir cet ordre avec négligence, et que peu à peu le mal ne s’accroisse contre les rois.
Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23 C’est pourquoi la copie de l’édit du roi Artaxerxès fut lue devant Réum-Béeltéem et Samsaï, le scribe, et leurs conseillers; et ils allèrent en grande hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et les repoussèrent avec un bras fort.
Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter [was] read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24 Alors fut interrompu l’ouvrage de la maison du Seigneur à Jérusalem, et l’on n’y travailla pas jusqu’à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi des Perses.
Then ceased the work of the house of God which [is] at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
