Esdras 10

1 Ainsi donc Esdras priant, implorant, pleurant, et étendu devant le temple de Dieu, une très grande assemblée d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants d’Israël se réunit auprès de lui, et le peuple pleura d’un grand pleur.

Now, when Ezra had prayed and when he had made confession, weeping and casting himself down, before the house of God, there gathered unto him out of Israel, an exceeding large convocation—men and women and children, for the people wept with a very bitter weeping.

2 Alors Séchénias, fils de Jéhiel, d’entre les enfants d’Elam, répondit à Esdras: Nous avons prévariqué contre notre Dieu, et nous avons pris des femmes étrangères des peuples de la terre; et maintenant, si on a du repentir de cela en Israël,

Then responded Shecaniah son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam, and said unto Ezra, We, have been faithful with our God, and have married foreign women from among the peoples of the land, —yet, now, there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 Faisons alliance avec le Seigneur notre Dieu, en sorte que nous rejetions toutes les femmes, et ceux qui sont nés d’elles, suivant la volonté du Seigneur et de ceux qui craignent le précepte du Seigneur notre Dieu: qu’il soit fait selon la loi.

Now, therefore, let us solemnize a covenant unto our God—to put away all the women and such as have been born of them, in the counsel of my lord, and them who tremble at the commandment of our God, —and, according to the law, let it be done.

4 Lève-toi, c’est à toi d’ordonner, et nous, nous serons avec toi; sois fort et agis.

Arise, for, upon thee, resteth the thing, but, we, are with thee, —be strong, and act.

5 Esdras donc se leva, et adjura les princes des prêtres et des Lévites, et tout Israël, afin qu’ils fissent selon cette parole, et ils jurèrent.

Then arose Ezra and made the rulers of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear to do according to this word—and they sware.

6 Et Esdras se leva devant la maison de Dieu, et s’en alla à la chambre de Johanan, fils d’Eliasib, et il y entra: il ne mangea point de pain et ne but point d’eau; car il pleurai t la transgression de ceux qui étaient venus de la captivité.

Then arose Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, —and, when he came thither, bread, did he not eat, and, water, did he not drink, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of them of the Exile.

7 Alors fut envoyée une voix en Juda et à Jérusalem, pour que tous les fils de la transmigration se rassemblassent à Jérusalem;

Then made they a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem, unto all the Sons of the Exile, to gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 Et pour que quiconque ne serait point venu dans trois jours, suivant le conseil des princes et des anciens, tout son bien lui fût ôté, et qu’il fût lui-même rejeté de l’assemblée de la transmigration.

and, whosoever should not come within three days, according to the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his goods should be devoted, —and, himself, be separated from the convocation of them of the Exile.

9 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin s’assemblèrent donc à Jérusalem dans les trois jours; c’était le neuvième mois, au vingtième jour du mois, et tout le peuple se tint sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de leurs péchés et des pluies.

Then were gathered together all the men of Judah and Benjamin unto Jerusalem, within three days, the same, was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month, —and all the people remained in the broadway of the house of God, trembling concerning the thing, and because of the heavy rains.

10 Alors Esdras le prêtre se leva, et leur dit: Vous avez transgressé, et vous avez pris des femmes étrangères, pour ajouter au péché d’Israël.

Then arose Ezra the priest, and said unto them, Ye, have acted unfaithfully, and have married foreign women, —to add unto the guilt of Israel.

11 Or maintenant rendez gloire au Seigneur Dieu de vos pères, et faites ce qui lui plaît: séparez-vous des peuples de la terre et des femmes étrangères.

Now, therefore, make confession unto Yahweh God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, —and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.

12 Et toute la multitude répondit, et dit avec une voix forte: Qu’il soit fait selon la parole que vous nous avez dite.

Then responded all the convocation and said, with a loud voice, —Thus, according to thy word concerning us, must it be done.

13 Cependant, parce que le peuple est nombreux, que c’est un temps de pluie, que nous ne pouvons rester dehors, et que l’ouvrage n’est pas d’un jour ni de deux (car nous avons grandement péché en cette chose),

Nevertheless, the people, are many, and, the season, is that of the heavy rains, and we are not able to stand outside, —and, the business, is not one for a single day, nor yet for two, for we have abundantly transgressed, in this thing.

14 Que des princes soient établis dans toute la multitude, et que tous ceux qui dans nos villes ont pris des femmes étrangères, viennent en des temps marqués, et avec eux des anciens de chaque ville et les juges aussi, jusqu’à ce que soit détournée de nous la colère de notre Dieu provoquée à cause de ce péché.

Let, we beseech thee, our rulers take up their station for all the convocation, and, all who, throughout our cities, have married foreign women, let them come in at times appointed, and, with them, the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the glow of the anger of our God be turned from us, concerning this matter.

15 Ainsi Jonathan, fils d’Azahel, et Jaasia, fils de Thécué, furent présentés pour cela, et Mésollam et Sébéthaï, Lévites, les aidèrent.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, made a stand against this, —and, Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, helped them.

16 Et les fils de la transmigration firent ainsi. Et Esdras, le prêtre, et les hommes princes des familles, s’en allèrent dans les maisons de leurs pères, et tous selon leurs noms, et ils s’établirent au premier jour du dixième mois pour s’informer de la chose.

But the Sons of the Exile, did thus, and Ezra the priest separated to himself certain men—ancestral heads by their ancestral houses, and all of them by name, —and they took their seats on the first day of the tenth month to search into the matter;

17 Or ils n’achevèrent de dénombrer les hommes qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères, qu’au premier jour du premier mois.

and they made an end with all the men who had married foreign women, —by the first day of the first month.

18 Et il se trouva d’entre les fils des prêtres qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères: d’entre les fils de Josué, les fils de Josédec, et ses frères, Maasia, Eliézer, Jarib et Godolia.

Now there were found, of the sons of the priests, who had married foreign women, —of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah;

19 Ils donnèrent leurs mains pour chasser leurs femmes, et pour offrir pour leur péché un bélier d’entre leurs brebis.

and they gave their hand, that they would put away their wives, —and, being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.

20 Et d’entre les fils d’Emmer, Hanani et Zébédia;

And, of the sons of Immer, Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 Et d’entre les fils de Harim, Maasia, Elia, Séméia, Jéhiel et Ozias;

And, of the sons of Harim, Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 Et d’entre les fils de Pheshur, Elioénaï, Maasia, Ismaël, Nathanaël, Jozabed et Elasa;

And, of the sons of Passhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasar.

23 Et d’entre les fils des Lévites, Jozabed, et Séméi, Célaïa (c’est le même que Calita), Phataïa, Juda et Eliézer;

And, of the Levites, Jozabad and Shimei, and Kelaiah, the same, is Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 Et d’entre les chantres, Eliasib; et d’entre les portiers, Sellum, Télem et Uri;

And, of the singers, Eliashib. And, of the doorkeepers, Shallum and Telem and Uri.

25 Et d’Israël: d’entre les fils de Pharos, Réméia, Jézia, Melchia, Miamin, Eliézer, Melchia et Banéa;

And, of Israel, of the sons of Parosh, Ramiah and Izziah and Malchijah and Mijamin and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 Et d’entre les fils d’Elam, Mathania, Zacharias, Jéhiel, Abdi, Jérimoth et Élia;

And, of the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 Et d’entre les fils de Zéthua, Elioénaï, Eliasib, Mathania, Jérimuth, Zabad et Aziza;

And, of the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

28 Et d’entre les fils de Bébaï, Johanan, Hanania, Zabbaï, Athalaï;

And, of the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

29 Et d’entre les fils de Bani, Mosollam, Melluch, Adaïa, Jasub, Saal et Ramoth;

And, of the sons of Bani, Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, Jeremoth.

30 Et d’entre les fils de Phahath-Moab, Edna, Chalal, Banaïas, Maasias, Mathanias, Béséléel, Bennuï, et Manassé;

And, of the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna and Chelal, —Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 Et d’entre les fils de Hérem, Eliézer, Josué, Melchias, Séméias, Siméon,

And, [of] the sons of Harim, Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon;

32 Benjamin, Maloch, Samarias;

Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.

33 Et d’entre les fils d’Hasom, Mathanaï, Mathatha, Zabad, Eliphéleth, Jermaï, Manassé, Séméi;

Of the sons of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, —Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.

34 D’entre les fils de Bani, Maaddi, Amram, Vel,

Of the sons of Bani, Maadai, Amram, and Uel;

35 Banéas, Badaïas, Chéliaü,

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhu;

36 Vania, Marimuth, Eliasib,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib;

37 Mathanias, Mathanaï, Jasi,

Mettaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu;

38 Et Bani, Bennuï, Séméi,

and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei;

39 Et Salmias, Nathan, Adaïas,

and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah;

40 Et Mechnedebaï, Sisaï, Saraï,

Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai;

41 Ezrel, Sélémiaü, Séméria,

Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah;

42 Sellum, Amaria, Joseph;

Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.

43 D’entre les fils de Nébo, Jéhiel, Mathathias, Zabad, Zabina, Jeddu, Joël et Banaïa.

Of the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, —Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 Tous ceux-ci avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et il y eut de ces femmes qui avaient enfanté des fils.

All these, had taken foreign women, —and had begotten of them children.
