Ézéchiel 31
1 Et il arriva en la onzième année, au troisième mois, au premier jour du mois, que la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant:
And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Fils d’un homme, dis à Pharaon, roi d’Egypte, et à son peuple: À qui es-tu devenu semblable dans ta grandeur?
Son of man, say unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and to his multitude, Unto whom art thou like in thy arrogance?
3 Voilà qu’Assur était comme un cèdre sur le Liban, beau en ses branches, abondant en feuillage, et d’une hauteur très élevée, et entre des rameaux touffus montait sa cime.
Behold, Asshur was a cedar in Lebanon beautiful in its boughs, and a shadowing thicket, and high in stature; and among the thick-boughed trees was its highest branch.
4 Des eaux l’ont nourri; l’abîme l’a fait pousser en haut; ses fleuves coulaient autour de ses racines, et il a envoyé ses ruisseaux vers tous les arbres de la campagne.
The waters made it great, the deep made it high, with its rivers it was flowing round the place where it was planted, and its ditches it sent forth unto all the trees of the field.
5 À cause de cela, sa hauteur s’est élevée au-dessus de tous les arbres de la contrée, et ses branches se sont multipliées; et ses rameaux se sont élevés, arrosés par les grandes eaux.
Therefore became its stature higher than all the trees of the field, and its boughs were multiplied, and its branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when it stretched itself forth.
6 Et, lorsqu’il eut étendu son ombre, tous les volatiles du ciel firent leur nid sur ses rameaux, et sous son feuillage toutes les bêtes des forêts déposèrent leurs petits, et sous son ombrage habitait une troupe de nations très nombreuses.
In its boughs made all the fowls of heaven their nest, and under its branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under its shade dwelt all great nations.
7 Et il était très beau dans sa grandeur et dans l’étendue de ses branches, car sa racine était près des grandes eaux.
And it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its light branches; for its root was by many waters.
8 Les cèdres n’étaient pas plus élevés dans le paradis de Dieu, les sapins n’égalaient pas sa cime, et les platanes ne lui étaient pas égaux en feuillage; aucun arbre du paradis de Dieu ne fut comparable à lui et à sa beauté.
The cedars could not obscure it in the garden of God; the firs were not like its boughs, and the chestnut-trees were not like its branches: not any tree in the garden of God was like unto it in its beauty.
9 Parce que je le fis si beau, et avec des feuilles si nombreuses et si épaisses, tous les arbres de délices, qui étaient dans le paradis de Dieu, lui ont porté envie.
Beautiful had I made it by the multitude of its light branches: so that all the trees of 'Eden that were in the garden of God, envied it.
10 À cause de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu: Parce qu’il s’est élevé en hauteur, et qu’il a poussé sa cime verdoyante et touffue, et que son cœur s’est enorgueilli dans sa grandeur,
Therefore thus hath said the Lord Eternal, Because thou wast so high in stature, and it had placed its highest branch between the thick-boughed trees, and its heart was lifted up through its height:
11 Je l’ai livré à la main de l’homme le plus fort des nations, qui agira comme il voudra; selon son impiété je l’ai rejeté.
Therefore do I give it up into the hand of the mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with it at his pleasure; for its wickedness do I drive it out.
12 Et des étrangers, et les hommes les plus cruels des nations le couperont par le pied, et le jetteront sur les montagnes; et dans toutes les vallées tomberont ses rameaux, et ses branches seront brisées sur tous les rochers de la terre; et tous les peuples de la terre se retireront de son ombrage et l’abandonneront.
And strangers, the fiercest of nations, cut it down, and cast it to the ground: on the mountains and in all the valleys fall its light branches, and its boughs are [lying] broken in all the ravines of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone away from its shade, and have cast it to the ground.
13 Dans ses ruines ont habité tous les volatiles du ciel, et dans ses rameaux ont demeuré toutes les bêtes de la contrée.
Upon its fallen fragments dwell all the fowls of the heaven, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field:
14 C’est pour cette raison qu’aucun arbre planté sur les eaux ne s’élèvera dans sa hauteur, et il ne portera pas son sommet au milieu de rameaux touffus et feuillus, et aucun de ceux qui sont arrosés par les eaux ne se soutiendra dans son élévation, parce que tous ont été livrés à la mort, précipités au fond de la terre, au milieu des fils des hommes, avec ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.
In order that none of all the trees by the waters shall exalt themselves for their height, nor place their highest branch among the thick-boughed trees, and that all those that are nourished by water shall not place themselves erect, because of their height; for they are all given up unto death, to the land of the nether world, in the midst of the children of men, with those that go down to the pit.
15 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu: Au jour qu’il est descendu aux enfers, j’ai fait faire un deuil, je l’ai couvert de l’abîme; et j’ai arrêté ses fleuves, et retenu les grandes eaux: le Liban a été attristé sur lui, et tous les arbres des champs ont été ébranlés. (Sheol h7585)
Thus hath said the Lord Eternal, On the day when it went down to the grave I caused a mourning; I covered the deep for its sake, and I restrained its rivers, and the great waters were withheld; and I caused Lebanon to be clothed in black attire for its sake, and all the trees of the field were famished because of it. (Sheol h7585)
16 Par le bruit de sa ruine, j’ai agité des nations, lorsque je le conduisais dans l’enfer avec ceux qui descendent dans la fosse; et ils se sont consolés au fond de la terre, tous les arbres de délices, beaux et magnifiques du Liban, tous ceux qui étaient arrosés par les eaux. (Sheol h7585)
Through the noise of its downfall I caused nations to quake, when I cast it down into the tomb with the [others] that descend into the pit: and in the land of the nether world comforted themselves all the trees of 'Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that were nourished by water. (Sheol h7585)
17 Car eux-mêmes aussi descendront avec lui dans l’enfer parmi les tués par le glaive; et le bras de chacun d’eux restera immobile sous son ombrage au milieu des nations. (Sheol h7585)
They also went down with it into the tomb unto those that were slain with the sword, and its helpers that had dwelt under its shade in the midst of the nations. (Sheol h7585)
18 À qui as-tu été assimilé, ô illustre et sublime entre les arbres de délices? Voilà que tu as été précipité au plus profond de la terre avec les arbres de délices, tu dormiras au milieu des incirconcis, avec ceux qui ont été tués par le glaive; c’est là Pharaon lui-même et toute sa multitude, dit le Seigneur Dieu.
To whom art thou then like in glory and in greatness among the trees of 'Eden? And thou too shalt be brought down with the trees of 'Eden unto the land of the nether world: in the midst of the uncircumcised shalt thou lie with those slain by the sword; yes, he, Pharaoh, and all his multitude, saith the Lord Eternal.
