Exode 5

1 Après cela Moïse et Aaron entrèrent et dirent à Pharaon: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Laisse aller mon peuple, afin qu’il me sacrifie dans le désert.

And after that Moses and Aaron went in, and said unto Pharaoh, Thus hath said the Everlasting One, the God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

2 Mais celui-ci répondit: Qui est le Seigneur, pour que j’écoute sa voix et que je laisse aller Israël? Je ne connais point le Seigneur, et Israël, je ne le laisserai pas aller.

And Pharaoh said, Who is the Everlasting, whose voice I am to obey, to let Israel go? I know not the Everlasting, nor will I let Israel go.

3 Ils dirent encore: Le Dieu des Hébreux nous a appelés, afin que nous fassions le chemin de trois journées dans le désert, et que nous sacrifiions au Seigneur notre Dieu, de peur que ne nous advienne la peste ou le glaive.

And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, a three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with the pestilence, or with the sword.

4 Le roi d’Egypte leur répondit: Pourquoi, Moïse et Aaron, détournez-vous le peuple de ses ouvrages? Allez à vos travaux.

And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, hinder the people from their works? get you unto your own affairs.

5 Pharaon ajouta: Le peuple est nombreux dans le pays: vous voyez que la multitude s’est insensiblement accrue; combien plus, si vous lui donnez relâche dans ses travaux?

And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye disturb them in the pursuit of their labors.

6 Il commanda donc en ce jour-là aux intendants des travaux, et aux exacteurs du peuple, disant:

And Pharaoh commanded on the same day the taskmasters of the people, and its officers, saying,

7 Vous ne donnerez plus du tout de paille au peuple pour faire des briques, comme auparavant; mais qu’ils aillent eux-mêmes, et qu’ils ramassent du chaume.

Ye shall no more give the people straw to make the bricks, as yesterday and the day before; they themselves shall go and gather themselves straw.

8 Cependant vous leur imposerez la quantité de briques qu’ils faisaient auparavant, et vous n’en diminuerez rien; car ils chôment, et c’est pour cela qu’ils vocifèrent, disant: Allons et sacrifions à notre Dieu.

And the number of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall impose upon them, ye shall not diminish aught thereof; for they are idle: therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

9 Qu’ils soient accablés d’ouvrages et qu’ils les accomplissent, et qu’ils n’acquiescent point à des paroles mensongères.

Let the work be made to lie heavily upon the men, that they may have enough to do therein; and that they may not pay attention to false words.

10 Etant donc sortis, les intendants des travaux et les exacteurs dirent au peuple: Ainsi dit Pharaon: Je ne vous donne point de paille.

And the taskmasters of the people and its officers went out, and they said to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you any straw.

11 Allez et amassez où vous pourrez trouver, et rien ne sera diminué de votre ouvrage.

Go ye, get yourselves straw from wherever ye can find it; yet not the least shall be taken off from your work.

12 Et le peuple se dispersa dans toute la terre d’Egypte pour amasser de la paille.

And the people scattered themselves abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

13 Les intendants des travaux aussi les pressaient, disant: Achevez votre ouvrage chaque jour, comme auparavant vous aviez coutume de faire, quand on vous donnait la paille.

And the taskmasters were urgent, saying, Fulfill your works, every day its due portion, just as when there was straw.

14 Ceux mêmes qui présidaient aux travaux des enfants d’Israël furent flagellés par les exacteurs de Pharaon, qui leur disaient: Pourquoi n’avez-vous point achevé le nombre de briques, ni hier ni aujourd’hui, comme auparavant?

And the officers of the children of Israel, whom the taskmasters of Pharaoh had set over them, were beaten, as these said, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick as heretofore, both yesterday and today?

15 Alors vinrent les préposés aux enfants d’Israël, et ils vociférèrent contre Pharaon, disant: Pourquoi agissez-vous ainsi contre vos serviteurs?

And the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

16 On ne nous donne point de paille, et l’on nous commande également des briques: voici que nous, vos serviteurs, nous sommes déchirés de verges, et que l’on agit injustement contre votre peuple.

Straw is not given unto thy servants, and, Make bricks, say they to us: and, behold, thy servants are beaten, and thy people are treated as sinners.

17 Pharaon répondit: Vous chômez par oisiveté, et c’est pourquoi vous dites: Allons et sacrifions au Seigneur.

But he said, Idle are ye, idle; therefore say ye, Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.

18 Allez donc et travaillez; on ne vous donnera point de paille, et vous rendrez le compte accoutumé de briques.

And now go, work, and straw shall not be given you; yet the required number of bricks shall ye deliver.

19 Ainsi les préposés aux enfants d’Israël se voyaient dans une fâcheuse position, puisqu’il leur était dit: Rien ne sera diminué des briques chaque jour.

And the officers of the children of Israel saw themselves in the evil necessity to say, Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks, every day of its task.

20 Or ils rencontrèrent Moïse et Aaron qui se trouvaient vis-à-vis, quand ils sortirent d’avec Pharaon,

And they met Moses and Aaron, standing in their way, as they came forth from Pharaoh.

21 Et ils leur dirent: Que le Seigneur voie et juge; car vous nous avez mis en mauvaise odeur auprès de Pharaon et de ses serviteurs, et vous lui avez donné un glaive pour qu’il nous tue.

And they said unto them, May the Lord look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

22 Alors Moïse retourna vers le Seigneur, et dit: Seigneur, pourquoi avez-vous affligé ce peuple? pourquoi m’avez-vous envoyé?

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou let so much evil come upon this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

23 Car depuis que je suis entré auprès de Pharaon pour lui parler en votre nom, il a affligé votre peuple, et vous ne les avez pas délivrés.

For, since I came unto Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done more evil to this people; but thou hast in nowise delivered thy people.
