Exode 22
1 Si quelqu’un vole un bœuf ou une brebis, et qu’il les tue ou les vende, il restituera cinq bœufs pour un bœuf et quatre brebis pour une brebis.
IF a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
2 Si le voleur est trouvé forçant une maison ou la minant, et qu’il meure d’une blessure reçue, celui qui l’a frappé ne sera pas coupable de son sang.
If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
3 Que s’il a fait cela, le soleil levé, il a commis un homicide, et il mourra lui-même. S’il n’a pas de quoi rendre pour le larcin, il sera vendu lui-même.
If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4 Si ce qu’il a volé est trouvé chez lui, vivant, soit un bœuf, soit un âne, soit une brebis, il restituera le double.
If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
5 Si quelqu’un endommage un champ ou une vigne, et qu’il laisse aller sa bête, pour qu’elle paisse ce qui est à autrui, il rendra tout ce qu’il aura de meilleur dans son champ, ou dans sa vigne, selon l’estimation du dommage.
If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man’s field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.
6 Si un feu qui s’élève trouve des épines et gagne un tas de gerbes, ou bien les blés sur pied dans les champs, celui qui a allumé le feu réparera le dommage.
If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
7 Si quelqu’un confie en garde à son ami de l’argent ou un objet quelconque, et qu’il soit volé à celui qui l’a reçu, si le voleur est trouvé, il rendra le double.
If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man’s house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.
8 Si le voleur reste inconnu, le maître de la maison sera conduit aux dieux, et il jurera qu’il n’a pas étendu sa main sur le bien de son prochain,
If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods.
9 Pour commettre le vol, soit d’un bœuf, soit d’un âne, d’une brebis, d’un vêtement et de tout ce qui peut porter dommage; c’est devant les dieux que viendra la cause de l’un et de l’autre; et si ceux-ci le condamnent, il restituera le double à son prochain.
For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
10 Si quelqu’un confie en garde à son prochain un âne, un bœuf, une brebis, ou toute autre bête, et qu’elle meure, ou dépérisse, ou bien soit prise par les ennemis, et que personne ne l’ait vu,
If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:
11 Interviendra le serment qu’il n’a pas étendu sa main sur le bien de son prochain, et le maître recevra le serment, et celui-là ne sera pas contraint de rendre.
Then shall an oath of the Lord be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.
12 Que si c’est par un vol que la bête a été enlevée, il réparera le dommage envers le maître.
And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.
13 Si elle a été mangée par une bête sauvage, qu’il lui apporte ce qui sera resté, et il ne restituera pas.
If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.
14 Si quelqu’un demande en prêt à son prochain quelqu’une de ses bêtes, et qu’elle dépérisse ou meure, le maître n’étant pas présent, il sera forcé de la rendre.
And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.
15 Que si le maître se trouve présent, il ne restituera pas, surtout s’il était venu la louer, pour le prix de son travail.
But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.
16 Si quelqu’un séduit une vierge non encore fiancée, et dort avec elle, il la dotera et la prendra pour femme.
And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.
17 Si le père de la vierge ne veut pas la donner, il rendra de l’argent selon la dot que les vierges ont coutume de recevoir.
If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
18 Tu ne laisseras pas vivre ceux qui usent de maléfices.
Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
19 Que celui qui commet un crime avec une bête, meure de mort.
Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.
20 Celui qui sacrifie à d’autres dieux qu’au Seigneur seul sera mis à mort.
He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
21 Tu ne contristeras point l’étranger, et tu ne l’affligeras point; car vous avez été étrangers vous-mêmes dans la terre d’Egypte.
Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
22 Vous ne nuirez point à la veuve et à l’orphelin.
Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
23 Si vous les offensez, ils crieront fortement vers moi, et j’entendrai leur clameur;
If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;
24 Et ma fureur s’indignera, puis je vous frapperai du glaive, et vos femmes seront veuves et vos fils orphelins.
And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25 Si tu prêtes de l’argent à mon peuple pauvre qui habite avec toi, tu ne le presseras point comme un exacteur, et tu ne l’accableras point d’usures.
If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
26 Si tu prends en gage de ton prochain un vêtement, tu lui rendras avant le coucher du soleil.
If thou at all take thy neighbour’s raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:
27 Car c’est le seul dont il se couvre, le seul vêtement de sa chair, et il n’en a pas un autre dans lequel il dorme: s’il crie vers moi, je l’exaucerai, parce que je suis miséricordieux.
For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.
28 Tu ne parleras point mal des dieux, et tu ne maudiras point le prince de ton peuple.
Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.
29 Tu ne différeras point à rendre tes dîmes et tes prémices: tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils.
Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.
30 Pour tes bœufs aussi et tes brebis tu feras de même: que pendant sept jours le premier-né soit avec sa mère, et au huitième jour tu me le rendras.
Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me.
31 Vous me serez des hommes consacrés; vous ne mangerez point de la chair dont les bêtes sauvages auront déjà goûté, mais vous la jetterez aux chiens.
And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.
