Exode 18

1 Or, quand Jéthro prêtre de Madian, parent de Moïse, eut appris tout ce que Dieu avait fait à Moïse et à Israël son peuple, et que le Seigneur avait retiré Israël de l’Egypte,

And Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

2 Il prit Séphora femme de Moïse, que celui-ci lui avait renvoyée,

and Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

3 Et ses deux fils dont l’un s’appelait Gersam, son père ayant dit: J’ai été voyageur dans une terre étrangère;

and her two sons, of whom the name of the one [is] Gershom, for he said, 'a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

4 Et l’autre Eliézer; car le Dieu de mon père, avait-il dit, fut mon aide, et il m’a délivré du glaive de Pharaon.

and the name of the other [is] Eliezer, for, 'the God of my father [is] for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

5 Jéthro donc, parent de Moïse, vint, ainsi que ses fils et sa femme, vers Moïse dans le désert, où il avait campé près de la montagne de Dieu.

And Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping — the mount of God;

6 Et il envoya vers Moïse, disant: Moi Jéthro ton parent, je viens à toi, ainsi que ta femme et tes deux fils avec elle.

and he saith unto Moses, 'I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

7 Moïse étant sorti au-devant de son parent, se prosterna et l’embrassa; et ils se saluèrent mutuellement par des paroles de paix. Et lorsque Jéthro fut entré dans la tente,

And Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

8 Moïse raconta à son parent tout ce qu’avait fait le Seigneur à Pharaon et aux Egyptiens à cause d’Israël, et toute la peine qui lui était arrivée dans le chemin!, et que le Seigneur les avait délivrés.

and Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

9 Et Jéthro se réjouit de tous les biens qu’avait faits le Seigneur à Israël, de ce qu’il l’avait délivré de la main des Egyptiens,

And Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

10 Et il dit: Béni le Seigneur, qui vous a délivrés de la main des Egyptiens, et de la main de Pharaon; qui a délivré son peuple de la main de l’Egypte.

and Jethro saith, 'Blessed [is] Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh — who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

11 Maintenant je connais que le Seigneur est grand au-dessus de tous les dieux, parce que c’est en vain qu’ils ont agi insolemment contre eux.

now I have known that Jehovah [is] greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly — [He is] above them!'

12 Jéthro donc, parent de Moïse, offrit des holocaustes et des hosties à Dieu, et Aaron et tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent pour manger du pain avec lui devant Dieu.

And Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

13 Or, le jour suivant Moïse s’assit pour juger le peuple, qui se présentait devant Moïse depuis le matin jusqu’au soir.

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

14 Ce qu’ayant vu le parent de Moïse, c’est-à-dire, tout ce qu’il faisait avec le peuple, il dit: Qu’est-ce que tu fais avec le peuple? pourquoi es-tu seul assis, et le peuple attend-il depuis le matin jusqu’au soir?

and the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, 'What [is] this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

15 Moïse lui répondit: Le peuple vient à moi demandant le jugement de Dieu;

And Moses saith to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come unto me to seek God;

16 Car lorsqu’il leur arrive quelque différend, ils viennent à moi, afin que je juge entre eux et que je leur montre les préceptes de Dieu et ses lois.

when they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

17 Mais celui-ci: Tu ne fais pas, dit-il, une bonne chose:

And the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, 'The thing which thou art doing [is] not good;

18 Par cet imprudent labeur tu te consumes, toi et tout ce peuple qui est avec toi: l’affaire surpasse tes forces; seul, tu ne pourras pas la soutenir.

thou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which [is] with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

19 Mais écoute mes paroles et mes conseils, et Dieu sera avec toi. Sois toi-même au peuple dans les choses qui regardent Dieu, pour rapporter les paroles qui lui sont adressées;

'Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

20 Et pour montrer au peuple les cérémonies et la manière de l’honorer, et la voie dans laquelle ils doivent entrer et l’œuvre qu’ils doivent accomplir.

and thou hast warned them [concerning] the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

21 Mais choisis d’entre tout le peuple des hommes valeureux, et craignant Dieu, en qui soit la vérité, et qui haïssent l’avarice, et fais-en des tribuns, des chefs de cent, de cinquante et de dix hommes;

'And thou — thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed [these] over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

22 Qu’ils jugent le peuple en tout temps: qu’ils te rapportent tout ce qui sera plus important, et qu’eux-mêmes jugent seulement les affaires moins considérables; alors la charge sera plus légère pour toi, le fardeau étant partagé avec d’autres.

and they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

23 Si tu fais cela, tu rempliras l’ordre de Dieu, et tu pourras exécuter ses préceptes: et tout ce peuple retournera dans ses demeures en paix.

If thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

24 Ces conseils entendus, Moïse fit tout ce que Jéthro lui avait suggéré.

And Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

25 Et ayant choisi des hommes vaillants de tout Israël, il les établit princes du peuple, tribuns, chefs de cent, de cinquante et de dix hommes.

and Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

26 Ils jugeaient le peuple en tout temps: mais ils rapportaient à Moïse tout ce qui était plus grave, jugeant seulement les affaires les plus faciles.

and they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

27 Et Moïse laissa aller son parent, qui s’en retournant alla en son pays.

And Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.
