Exode 16
1 Et ils partirent d’Elim, et toute la multitude des enfants d’Israël vint au désert de Sin, qui est entre Elim et Sinaï, le quinzième jour du second mois après qu’ils furent sortis de la terre d’Egypte.
They took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails] came to the wilderness of Cin [Clay], which is between Elim and Sinai [Thorn], on the fifteenth day of the second month (Iyar ·Light / I Am God your healer, 2·) after their departing out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery].
2 Et toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël murmura contre Moïse et Aaron dans le désert.
The whole congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails] murmured against Moses [Drawn out] and against Aaron [Light-bringer] in the wilderness;
3 Et les enfants d’Israël leur dirent: Plût à Dieu que nous fussions morts par la main du Seigneur dans la terre d’Egypte, quand nous étions assis près des marmites de viandes, et que nous mangions du pain à satiété! Pourquoi nous avez-vous amenés dans ce désert, pour faire mourir toute cette multitude de faim?
and the children of Israel [God prevails] said to them, “We wish that we had died by Adonai’s hand in the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery], when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Or le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Voici que moi, je ferai pleuvoir pour vous du pain du ciel; que le peuple sorte, et qu’il en amasse ce qui lui suffira pour chaque jour, afin que j’éprouve s’il marche en ma loi, ou non.
Then Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Behold, I will rain bread from the sky for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my Torah ·Teaching·, or not.
5 Mais qu’au sixième jour ils apprêtent ce qu’ils auront apporté, et que ce soit le double de ce qu’ils avaient coutume d’amasser chaque jour.
It shall come to pass on the sixth day, that they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
6 Et Moïse et Aaron dirent à tous les enfants d’Israël: Ce soir vous saurez que c’est le Seigneur qui vous a retirés de la terre d’Egypte;
Moses [Drawn out] and Aaron [Light-bringer] said to all the children of Israel [God prevails], “At evening, then you shall know that Adonai has brought you out from the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery];
7 Et au matin vous verrez la gloire du Seigneur; car il a entendu votre murmure contre lui; mais nous, qui sommes-nous, pour que vous murmuriez contre nous?
and in the morning, then you shall see the kavod Yahweh ·weighty glory of He sustains breathing·; because he sh'ma ·hears obeys· your murmurings against Adonai. Who are we, that you murmur against us?”
8 Et Moïse ajouta: Le Seigneur vous donnera ce soir de la chair à manger, et au matin du pain à satiété, parce qu’il a entendu vos murmures par lesquels vous avez murmuré contre lui; car, nous, que sommes-nous? ce n’est donc pas contre nous qu’est votre murmure, mais contre le Seigneur.
Moses [Drawn out] said, “Now Adonai shall give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you; because Adonai sh'ma ·hears obeys· your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Adonai.”
9 Moïse dit aussi à Aaron: Dis à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël: Approchez-vous devant le Seigneur car il a entendu votre murmure.
Moses [Drawn out] said to Aaron [Light-bringer], “Tell all the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails], ‘Come near before Adonai, for he has heard your murmurings.’”
10 Et lorsque Aaron parlait à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, ils regardèrent vers le désert, et voilà que la gloire du Seigneur apparut dans la nuée.
As Aaron [Light-bringer] spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails], they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the kavod Yahweh ·weighty glory of He sustains breathing· appeared in the cloud.
11 Or le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant:
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying,
12 J’ai entendu les murmures des enfants d’Israël, dis-leur: Ce soir vous mangerez de la chair, et au matin vous serez rassasiés de pain, et vous saurez que je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu.
“I have sh'ma ·heard obeyed· the murmurings of the children of Israel [God prevails]. Speak to them, saying, ‘At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread: and you shall know that I am Adonai your God.’”
13 Le soir vint donc, et les cailles montant couvrirent le camp: le matin aussi la rosée se trouva répandue autour du camp.
In the evening, quail came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay around the camp.
14 Et lorsqu’elle eut couvert la surface de la terre, il apparut dans le désert quelque chose de menu et comme pilé au mortier, ressemblant à la gelée blanche sur la terre.
When the dew that lay had gone, behold, on the surface of the wilderness was a small round thing, small as the frost on the ground.
15 Ce qu’ayant vu les enfants d’Israël, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Manhu, ce qui signifie: Qu’est-ceci? ils ignoraient, en effet, ce que c’était. Moïse leur dit: C’est le pain que le Seigneur vous a donné à manger.
When the children of Israel [God prevails] saw it, they asked one another, “Man hu? ·What is it·?” For they didn’t know what it was. Moses [Drawn out] answered them, “It is the bread which Adonai has given you to eat.”
16 Voici les paroles que le Seigneur a ordonnées: Que chacun en amasse autant qu’il suffit pour manger: un gomor pour chaque tête, selon le nombre de vos âmes qui habitent dans leur tente; voilà ce que vous recueillerez.
This is the thing which Adonai has enjoined: “Gather of it everyone according to his eating; an omer ·sheath of grain· [2.6 qt; 1.2 L] a head, according to the number of your persons, you shall take it, every man for those who are in his tent.”
17 Et les enfants d’Israël firent ainsi, et ils en amassèrent, l’un plus, l’autre moins.
The children of Israel [God prevails] did so, and gathered some more, some less.
18 Et ils la mesurèrent à la mesure du gomor: or celui qui en avait plus amassé, n’en eut pas davantage, et celui qui en avait moins amassé, n’en trouva pas moins, car chacun en recueillit selon ce qu’il pouvait manger.
When they measured it with an omer ·sheath of grain· [2.6 qt; 1.2 L], he who gathered much had nothing extra, and he who gathered little had nothing lacking. They gathered every man according to his eating.
19 Moïse leur dit aussi: Que nul n’en laisse pour le malin.
Moses [Drawn out] said to them, “Let no one leave of it until the morning.”
20 Tous ne l’écoutèrent pas, mais quelques-uns d’entre eux en laissèrent jusqu’au matin; or elle commença par fourmiller de vers, puis elle se corrompit; et Moïse fut irrité contre eux.
Notwithstanding they didn’t sh'ma ·hear obey· Moses [Drawn out], but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and became foul: and Moses [Drawn out] was angry with them.
21 Chacun en amassait donc le matin autant qu’il pouvait suffire pour manger; et lorsque le soleil était devenu chaud, elle se fondait.
They gathered it morning by morning, everyone according to his eating. When the sun grew hot, it melted.
22 Mais, au sixième jour, ils amassèrent le double de cette nourriture, c’est-à-dire, deux gomors pour chaque personne: tous les chefs de la multitude vinrent, et l’annoncèrent à Moïse,
On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one, and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses [Drawn out].
23 Qui leur dit: Voici ce qu’a dit le Seigneur: C’est demain le repos du sabbat, consacré au Seigneur; ce qui doit être fait, faites-le aujourd’hui; et ce qui doit être cuit, faites-le cuire, mais tout ce qui sera de reste, serrez-le jusqu’au matin.
He said to them, “This is that which Adonai has spoken, ‘Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath ·Intermission· to Adonai. Bake that which you want to bake, and boil that which you want to boil; and all that remains over lay up for yourselves to be kept until the morning.’”
24 Ils firent donc selon qu’avait ordonné Moïse, et la manne ne se corrompit point; et on n’y trouva pas de ver.
They laid it up until the morning, as Moses [Drawn out] enjoined, and it didn’t become foul, and there were no worms in it.
25 Et Moïse dit: Mangez-la aujourd’hui, parce que c’est le sabbat du Seigneur; il ne s’en trouvera pas aujourd’hui dans la campagne.
Moses [Drawn out] said, “Eat that today, for today is a Shabath ·Intermission· to Adonai. Today you shall not find it in the field.
26 Pendant six jours ramassez-en, car au septième jour, c’est le sabbat du Seigneur; c’est pourquoi on n’en trouvera pas.
Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day is the Shabath ·Intermission·. In it there shall be none.”
27 Or vint le septième jour, et quelques-uns du peuple étant sortis pour en amasser, ils n’en trouvèrent point.
On the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather, and they found none.
28 Alors le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Jusqu’à quand ne voudrez vous point garder mes commandements et ma loi?
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “How long do you refuse to keep my mitzvot ·instructions· and my torot ·teachings·?
29 Voyez que le Seigneur vous a donné le sabbat, et à cause de cela au sixième jour il vous a accordé le double de nourriture: que chacun demeure chez soi, et que nul ne sorte de son lieu au septième jour.
Behold, because Adonai has given you the Shabath ·Intermission·, therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days. Everyone stay in his place. Let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”
30 Ainsi le peuple sabbatisa au septième jour.
So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 Et la maison d’Israël appela cette nourriture du nom de Man; elle était blanche comme une graine de coriandre, et son goût, celui de la fleur de farine mêlée avec du miel.
The house of Israel [God prevails] called its name Manna ·What is it·, and it was like coriander seed, white; and its taste was like wafers with honey.
32 Or Moïse dit: Voici les paroles qu’a ordonnées le Seigneur: Emplis-en un gomor, et qu’il soit gardé dans les générations qui doivent venir dans la suite, afin qu’elles connaissent le pain dont je vous ai nourris dans le désert, quand vous avez été retirés de la terre d’Egypte.
Moses [Drawn out] said, “This is the thing which Adonai has enjoined, ‘Let an omer-full of it be kept throughout all your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery].’”
33 Et Moïse dit à Aaron: Prends un vase et mets-y de la Manne, autant que peut en contenir un gomor; et place-le devant le Seigneur, afin de le conserver en vos générations,
Moses [Drawn out] said to Aaron [Light-bringer], “Take a pot, and put an omer-full of manna ·what is it· in it, and lay it up before Adonai, to be kept throughout all your generations.”
34 Comme a ordonné le Seigneur à Moïse. Et Aaron le plaça dans le tabernacle pour être réservé.
As Adonai enjoined Moses [Drawn out], so Aaron [Light-bringer] laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.
35 Or, les enfants d’Israël mangèrent la Manne pendant quarante ans, jusqu’à ce qu’ils vinrent en une terre habitable; c’est de cet aliment qu’ils furent nourris, jusqu’à ce qu’ils touchèrent aux confins de la terre de Chanaan.
The children of Israel [God prevails] ate the manna ·what is it· forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate the manna ·what is it· until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan [Humbled].
36 Or, le gomor est la dixième partie de l’éphi.
Now an omer ·sheath of grain· [2.6 qt; 1.2 L] is one tenth of an ephah [0.63 bushels; 5.9 gal; 22 L].
