Esther 9

1 Ainsi le treizième jour du douzième mois que nous avons déjà dit s’appeler Adar, quand le massacre des Juifs était préparé, et que leurs ennemis respiraient le sang, les Juifs, au contraire, commencèrent à être les plus forts et à se venger de leurs adversaires,

And, in the twelfth month, the same, is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day thereof, when the word of the king and his edict arrived to be put in execution, —on the day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, though it, was changed, so that the Jews themselves should have power over them who hated them,

2 Et ils s’assemblèrent dans toutes les villes, les bourgs, et d’autres lieux, pour étendre la main contre leurs ennemis et leurs persécuteurs; et nul n’osa résister, parce que la crainte de leur puissance avait saisi tous les peuples.

the Jews assembled themselves together in their cities, throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, to thrust forth a hand against them who were seeking their hurt, and, no man, stood before them, for the dread of them had fallen upon all the peoples.

3 Car et les juges des provinces, et les chefs, et les gouverneurs et tout dignitaire qui était préposé à chaque lieu et à chaque ouvrage, élevaient les Juifs par la crainte de Mardochée,

And, all the rulers of the provinces, and the satraps and the pashas, and the doers of business that pertained to the king, were extolling the Jews, —for the dread of Mordecai, had fallen upon them;

4 Qu’on savait être prince du palais, et pouvoir beaucoup: la renommée de son nom aussi croissait tous les jours, et volait dans les bouches de tout le monde.

since great was Mordecai, in the house of the king, and, his fame, was going forth throughout all the provinces, —for, the man Mordecai, went on waxing great.

5 C’est pourquoi les Juifs frappèrent leurs ennemis d’une grande plaie, et les tuèrent, leur rendant ce qu’ils s’étaient préparés à leur faire à eux-mêmes;

So then the Jews smote all their enemies, with the smiting of the sword and slaughter, and destruction, —and they dealt with them who hated them according to their pleasure.

6 Tellement que même dans Suse, ils tuèrent cinq cents hommes, outre les dix fils d’Aman, l’Agagite, ennemi des Juifs, dont voici les nom:

Yea, in Shusan the palace, did the Jews slay and destroy five hundred men.

7 Pharsandatha, Delphon, Esphata,

And Parshandatha and Dalphon, and Aspatha;

8 Phoratha, Adalia, Aridatha,

and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha;

9 Phermestha, Arisaï, Aridaï et Jézatha.

and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha; —

10 Lorsqu’ils les eurent tués, ils ne voulurent pas toucher à leurs biens.

the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the adversary of the Jews, slew they, —but, on the spoil, thrust they not forth their hand.

11 Et aussitôt le nombre de ceux qui avaient été tués dans Suse fut rapporté au roi,

On that day, came in the number of the slain into Shusan the palace, before the king.

12 Qui dit à la reine: Dans la ville de Suse, les Juifs ont tué cinq cents hommes, et de plus les dix fils d’Aman: combien grand pensez-vous qu’est le carnage dans toutes les provinces? Que demandez-vous de plus, et que voulez-vous que je commande de faire?

Then said the king unto Esther the queen, In Shusan the palace, have the Jews slain and caused to perish five hundred men, and the ten sons of Haman, —in the rest of the provinces of the king, what have they done? What, then, is thy petition, that it may be granted thee? and what is thy request further, that it may he performed?

13 Esther lui répondit: S’il plaît au roi que le pouvoir soit donné aux Juifs de faire encore demain dans Suse ce qu’ils ont fait aujourd’hui, et que les dix fils d’Aman soient pendus aux potences.

Then said Esther, If, unto the king, it seem good, let it be granted, to-morrow also, unto the Jews who are in Shusan, to do according to the edict of to-day, —and that, the ten sons of Haman, be hanged upon the gallows.

14 Et le roi ordonna qu’il fût fait ainsi. Et aussitôt l’édit fut affiché dans Suse, et les dix fils d’Aman furent pendus.

And the king commanded it to be done so, and there was given an edict, in Shusan, —and, the ten sons of Haman, they hanged.

15 Les Juifs s’étant assemblés le quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar, tuèrent trois cents hommes dans Suse, mais ils n’enlevèrent pas leur bien.

So the Jews who were in Shusan assembled themselves together, on the fourteenth day also, of the month Adar, and slew in Shusan three hundred men, —but, on the spoil, thrust they not forth their hand.

16 Et dans toutes les provinces qui étaient sous la domination du roi, les Juifs défendirent leur vie, et tuèrent leurs ennemis et leurs persécuteurs; tellement qu’il y en eut jusqu’à soixante-quinze mille de tués; mais nul Juif ne toucha à rien de leurs biens.

And, the remainder of the Jews who were in the provinces of the king, assembled themselves together and stood for their life, and then had rest from their enemies, having slain of them that hated them seventy-five thousand, —but, on the spoil, thrust they not forth their hand:

17 Or le treizième jour du mois d’Adar fut pour tous le premier du massacre, et au quatorzième jour ils cessèrent de tuer. Ils établirent que ce jour était solennel, en sorte qu’ils passeraient tout ce temps-là à l’avenir dans les banquets, dans la joie et dans les festins.

on the thirteenth day of the month Adar, —and then had rest on the fourteenth day thereof, and made it a day of banqueting and rejoicing.

18 Mais ceux qui dans la ville de Suse avaient exercé le carnage étaient encore pendant le treizième et le quatorzième jour du même mois occupés au carnage; mais au quinzième jour ils cessèrent de frapper. Et c’est pour cela qu’ils établirent ce même jour comme solennel pour des banquets et des réjouissances.

But, the Jews who were in Shusan, assembled themselves together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth day thereof, —and then had rest on the fifteenth day thereof, and made it a day of banqueting and rejoicing.

19 Quant aux Juifs qui demeuraient dans les villes non murées et dans les villages, ils déterminèrent le quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar pour un jour de festin et de joie, en sorte qu’ils se réjouissent en ce jour, et s’envoient mutuellement une partie des mets et des aliments.

For this cause, the country Jews, who dwelt in the country towns, were making the fourteenth day of the month Adar one of rejoicing and banqueting, and a day of happiness, —and of sending portions every one to his neighbour.

20 C’est pourquoi Mardochée écrivit toutes ces choses, et, les ayant renfermées dans des lettres, il les envoya aux Juifs qui demeuraient dans toutes les provinces du roi, tant celles qui étaient situées dans le voisinage que celles qui étaient au loin,

And Mordecai wrote these things, —and sent letters unto all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, near, and far off;

21 Afin qu’ils adoptassent le quatorzième et le quinzième jour du mois d’Adar comme des fêtes, et qu’au retour de chaque année ils les célébrassent par des honneurs solennels,

to establish for them, that they should continue to observe the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day thereof, —always year by year;

22 Parce que c’est en ces jours mêmes que les Juifs se vengèrent de leurs ennemis, et que le deuil et la tristesse furent changés en gaieté et en joie; et afin que ce fussent des jours de banquets et de réjouissances, et qu’ils s’envoyassent les uns aux autres une partie des mets, et qu’ils donnassent aux pauvres de petits présents.

according to the days wherein the Jews found rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned for them, from sorrow to joy, and from mourning to a happy day, —that they should make them days of banqueting and rejoicing, and of sending portions, every one to his neighbour, and gifts, unto the needy.

23 Les Juifs adoptèrent donc comme rite solennel tout ce qu’en ce temps-là ils avaient commencé à faire, et ce que Mardochée dans ses lettres leur avait mandé de faire.

And the Jews took upon them that which they had begun to do, —and that which Mordecai had written unto them;

24 Car Aman, fils d’Amadath, de la race d’Agag, ennemi et adversaire des Juifs, avait médité le mal contre eux pour les perdre et les exterminer, et il avait jeté phur, ce qui en notre langue se traduit par le sort.

because, Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the adversary of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews, to cause them to perish, —and had cast Pur, the same, is the Lot, to terrify them, and to destroy them;

25 Mais après cela Esther entra auprès du roi, demandant avec instances que, par une nouvelle lettre du roi, ses efforts devinssent impuissants, et que le mal qu’il avait imaginé contre les Juifs retournât sur sa tête. En effet, on les attacha, et lui et ses fils, à la croix.

but, by [Esther’s] going in before the king, he commanded by letter, that his wicked plot which he had plotted against the Jews, should return, upon his own head, —and that he and his sons should be hanged upon the gallows.

26 Et depuis ce temps-là ces jours ont été appelés phurim, c’est-à-dire jour des sorts, parce que le phur c’est-à-dire le sort, avait été jeté dans l’urne. Et tout ce qui s’est passé est contenu dans le rouleau de cette lettre, c’est-à-dire du livre de Mardochée;

For this cause, called they these days Purim, after the name Pur, for this cause, —for all the words of this epistle, —and what they had seen concerning such a matter, and what had reached unto them.

27 Tout ce qu’ils souffrirent, et les changements qui survinrent. Les Juifs prirent pour eux, pour leur race, et pour tous ceux qui voulurent s’associer à leur religion, l’engagement qu’il ne serait permis à personne de passer sans solennité ces deux jours, que cet écrit indique, et qui demandent des temps déterminés, les années se succédant sans interruption.

The Jews established and took upon themselves—and upon their seed, and upon all who should join themselves unto them, that it might not pass away, that they would continue to keep these two days, according to the writing concerning them and at their set time, —always year by year.

28 Ce sont ces jours qu’aucun oubli n’effacera jamais, et qu’à chaque génération toutes les provinces célébreront dans l’univers entier; et il n’est aucune ville en laquelle les jours des phurim, c’est-à-dire les jours des sorts, ne soient observés par les Juifs, et par leur race, qui est liée par ces cérémonies.

And, these days, were to be remembered and to be kept, always from generation to generation, by every family, every province, and every city, —that, these days of Purim, should not pass away, out of the midst of the Jews, and, the memorial of them, not cease from their seed.

29 Et la reine Esther, fille d’Abihaïl, et Mardochée, le Juif, écrivirent encore une seconde lettre, afin que ce jour fût ratifié avec tout le zèle possible dans l’avenir.

Then wrote Esther the queen daughter of Abihail and Mordecai the Jew, with all authority, —to confirm this second epistle concerning the Purim;

30 Et ils envoyèrent à tous les Juifs qui demeuraient dans les cent vingt-sept provinces du roi Assuérus, afin qu’ils eussent la paix et reçussent la vérité,

and he sent letters unto all the Jews, throughout the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, —words of peace and stability:

31 Observant les jours des sorts, et les célébrant en leur temps avec joie, comme l’avaient établi Mardochée et Esther, et comme ils avaient pris l’engagement d’observer, eux et leur race, les jeûnes, les cris, les jours des sorts,

to establish these days of the Purim, in their set times, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined upon them, and according as they had enjoined upon their own soul, and upon their seed, —the story of the fastings and of their outcry.

32 Et tout ce qui est contenu dans l’histoire de ce livre, qui est appelé Esther.

And, the command of Esther, confirmed the story of these Purim, —and it was written in a book.
