Esther 8
1 En ce jour-là, le roi Assuérus donna à la reine Esther la maison d’Aman, l’ennemi des Juifs, et Mardochée entra devant la face du roi; car Esther lui avait avoué qu’il était son oncle.
On that day king, Artaxerxes gave the house of Haman, the adversary of the Jews, to queen Esther, and Mordecai entered before the king. For Esther had confessed to him that he was her paternal uncle.
2 Et le roi prit l’anneau qu’il avait commandé d’ôter à Aman, et il le remit à Mardochée. Or Esther établit Mardochée sur sa maison.
And the king took the ring, which he had ordered to be taken from Haman, and he handed it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed Mordecai over her house.
3 Et non contente de cela, elle se jeta aux pieds du roi, pleura, et, lui parlant, elle le pria de commander que la malice d’Aman, l’Agagite, et ses machinations très mauvaises qu’il avait imaginées contre les Juifs, devinssent impuissantes.
Not content with these things, she threw herself down at the king’s feet and wept, and, speaking to him, pleaded that he would give orders that the malice of Haman the Agagite, and his most wicked schemes, which he had contrived against the Jews, would be made ineffective.
4 Or le roi, selon la coutume, lui tendit de la main son sceptre d’or, par où se manifestait un signe de clémence; et la reine, se levant, se tint devant lui,
But he, as was the custom, extended the golden scepter with his hand, which was the sign of clemency, and she rose up and stood before him.
5 Et dit: S’il plaît au roi, et si j’ai trouvé grâce à ses yeux, et que ma prière ne lui paraisse pas importune, je demande avec instance que par de nouvelles lettres les anciennes lettres d’Aman, l’insidieux, et l’ennemi des Juifs, par lesquelles il avait ordonné qu’ils périraient dans toutes les provinces du roi, soient révoquées.
And she said, “If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his eyes, and my request is not seen to be disagreeable to him, I beg you that the former letters of Haman, the traitor and enemy of the Jews, by which he instructed them to be destroyed in all the king’s provinces, may be corrected by new letters.
6 Car comment pourrai-je soutenir la mort et le massacre de mon peuple?
For how will I be able to endure the murder and execution of my people?”
7 Et le roi Assuérus répondit à la reine Esther, et à Mardochée le Juif: J’ai donné à Esther la maison d’Aman, et j’ai commandé que lui fût attaché à la croix, parce qu’il a osé porter la main sur les Juifs.
And king Artaxerxes answered Esther the queen and Mordecai the Jew, “I have granted Haman’s house to Esther, and I have ordered him to be fastened to a cross, because he dared to lay hands on the Jews.
8 Ecrivez donc aux Juifs comme il vous plaît, au nom du roi, scellant les lettres de mon anneau. Car c’était la coutume que nul n’osait s’opposer aux lettres qui étaient envoyées au nom du roi et scellées de son anneau.
Therefore, write to the Jews, just as it pleases you, in the king’s name, sealing the letters with my ring.” For this was the custom, that letters which were sent in the king’s name and were sealed with his ring, no one would dare to contradict.
9 Les scribes donc et les copistes du roi ayant été mandés (or c’était le temps du troisième mois, qui est appelé Siban), le vingt-troisième jour de ce même mois, les lettres furent écrites, comme Mardochée le voulait, aux Juifs, aux grands, aux gouverneurs et aux juges qui commandaient aux cent vingt-sept provinces du royaume, depuis l’Inde jusqu’à l’Ethiopie, à une province et à une province, à un peuple et à un peuple, suivant leurs langues et les caractères de leur écriture, et aux Juifs, selon qu’ils pouvaient les lire et les comprendre.
Then the scribes and copyists were brought in, (now it was the time of the third month which is called Sivan, ) on the twenty-third day of the month, and letters were written, as Mordecai wanted, to the Jews, and to the governors, and procurators, and judges, who presided over the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, from India all the way to Ethiopia: to one province and another, to one people and another, in accordance with their languages and letters, and to the Jews, exactly as they were able to read and hear.
10 Ainsi ces lettres, qui étaient envoyées au nom du roi, furent scellées de son anneau, et portées par les courriers, qui courant de différents côtés dans toutes les provinces, prévinrent les anciennes lettres par ces nouveaux messages.
And these letters, which were sent in the king’s name, had been signed with his ring, and were sent by swift couriers who were to rush in every direction, through all the provinces, so as to prevent the former letters with new messages.
11 Le roi leur commanda d’aller trouver les Juifs en chaque ville, et de leur ordonner de s’assembler tous, de défendre leur vie, de tuer et de détruire tous leurs ennemis avec leurs femmes, leurs enfants, et toutes leurs maisons, et d’enlever leurs dépouilles.
The king commanded them to bring together the Jews throughout each city, and to instruct them to join together, so as to make a stand for their lives, and to execute and destroy all their enemies, with their wives and children and their entire houses, and to plunder their spoil.
12 Et on fixa dans toutes les provinces un jour de vengeance, c’est le treizième jour du douzième mois, Adar.
And one day of retribution was established throughout all the provinces, namely, the thirteenth of the twelfth month Adar.
13 La substance de la lettre était que dans toutes les contrées, et à tous les peuples qui étaient soumis à l’empire du roi Assuérus, il fût notifié que les Juifs étaient prêts à tirer vengeance de leurs ennemis.
And such was the content of the letter, so that it would be made known in all lands and nations, which are subject to the authority of king Artaxerxes, that the Jews have been made ready to be vindicated of their enemies.
14 Les courriers partirent donc en grande hâte, portant la nouvelle, et l’édit du roi fut affiché dans Suse.
And so the swift couriers departed in haste, carrying through the announcement, and the king’s edict was hung up in Susa.
15 Or Mardochée, sortant du palais et de la présence du roi, parut dans un grand éclat avec des vêtements royaux, qui étaient de couleur d’hyacinthe et de bleu céleste, portant une couronne d’or sur la tête, et couvert d’un manteau de soie et de pourpre. Et toute la ville fut transportée de joie et se livra à l’allégresse.
But Mordecai, going forth from the palace and from the king’s presence, shone in royal apparel the color of hyacinth and of the sky, wearing a golden crown on his head, and clothed with a cloak of silk and purple. And all the city rejoiced and was joyful.
16 Quant aux Juifs, il sembla se lever pour eux une nouvelle lumière, la joie, l’honneur et l’allégresse.
But for the Jews, a new light seemed to rise; there was joy, honor, and dancing.
17 Parmi tous les peuples, les villes et les provinces, partout où les ordres du roi arrivaient, c’étaient des transports de joie, des banquets, des festins et un jour de fête; tellement que beaucoup de gens d’une autre nation et d’une autre religion embrassèrent leur religion et leurs cérémonies; car une grande crainte du nom juif avait saisi tous les esprits.
With all the peoples, cities, and provinces, wherever the king’s orders arrived, there was wonderful rejoicing, banquets and feasts, and a solemn holy day, so much so that many of the other nations joined themselves to their religious practices and ceremonies. For a great fear of the name of the Jews had overcome them all.
