Éphésiens 4

1 Je vous conjure donc, moi chargé de liens pour le Seigneur, de marcher d’une manière digne de la vocation à laquelle vous avez été appelés,

I beg you, then – I who am a prisoner in the Master’s cause – to live lives worthy of the call that you have received;

2 Avec toute humilité et toute mansuétude, avec toute patience, vous supportant mutuellement en charité;

always humble and gentle, patient, bearing lovingly with one another,

3 Appliqués à conserver l’unité d’esprit, par le hen de la paix.

and striving to maintain in the bond of peace the unity given by the Spirit.

4 Soyez un seul corps et un seul esprit comme vous avez été appelés à une seule espérance dans votre vocation.

There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there was but one hope set before you when you received your call.

5 Il y a un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême,

There is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

6 Un seul Dieu et Père de tous, qui est au-dessus de tous, et au milieu de toutes choses, et en nous tous.

There is but one God and Father of all – the God who is over all, pervades all, and is in all.

7 Or à chacun de nous a été donnée la grâce, selon la mesure du don de Jésus-Christ.

Everyone of us, however, has been entrusted with some charge, each in accordance with the extent of the gift of the Christ.

8 C’est pourquoi l’Ecriture dit: Montant au ciel, il a conduit une captivité captive; il a donné des dons aux hommes.

That is why it is said – ‘When he went up on high, he led his captives into captivity. And gave gifts to humanity.’

9 Mais qu’est-ce: Il est monté, sinon qu’il est descendu auparavant dans les parties inférieures de la terre?

Now surely this ‘going up’ must imply that he had already gone down into the world beneath.

10 Celui qui est descendu est le même qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux, afin qu’il remplît toutes choses.

He who went down is the same as he who went up – up beyond the highest heaven, so that he might fill all things with his presence.

11 Et c’est lui qui a fait les uns apôtres, les autres prophètes, d’autres évangélistes, d’autres pasteurs et docteurs,

And he it is who gave to the church apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers,

12 Pour la perfection des saints, pour l’œuvre du ministère, pour l’édification du corps du Christ,

to fit his people for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of the Christ.

13 Jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions tous à l’unité de la foi et de la connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l’état d’un homme parfait, à la mesure de l’âge de la plénitude du Christ;

And this will continue, until we all attain to that unity which is given by faith and by a fuller knowledge of the Son of God; until we reach maturity – the full standard of the perfection of the Christ.

14 Afin que nous ne soyons plus comme de petits enfants qui flottent, ni emportés çà et là à tout vent de doctrine, par la méchanceté des hommes, par l’astuce qui entraîne dans le piège de l’erreur.

Then we will no longer be like infants, tossed backward and forward, blown about by every breath of human teaching and by people’s trickery and craftiness;

15 Mais que pratiquant la vérité dans la charité, nous croissions en toutes choses dans celui qui est le chef, le Christ,

but holding the truth in a spirit of love, we will grow into complete union with him who is our head – Christ himself.

16 En vertu duquel tout le corps uni et lié par toutes les jointures qui se prêtent un mutuel secours, d’après une opération proportionnée à chaque membre, reçoit son accroissement pour être édifié dans la charité.

For from him the whole body, closely joined and knit together by the contact of every part with the source of its life, derives its power to grow, in proportion to the vigour of each individual part; and so is being built up in a spirit of love.

17 Je vous dis donc, et je vous conjure par le Seigneur de ne plus marcher comme les gentils, qui marchent dans la vanité de leurs pensées,

This, then, as one in union with the Lord, I implore: Do not continue to live such purposeless lives as the Gentiles live,

18 Qui ont l’intelligence obscurcie de ténèbres, entièrement éloignés de la vie de Dieu, par l’ignorance qui est en eux, à cause de l’aveuglement de leur cœur;

with their powers of discernment darkened, cut off from the life of God, owing to the ignorance that prevails among them and to the hardness of their hearts.

19 Qui, ayant perdu tout espoir, se sont livrés à l’impudicité, à toutes sortes de dissolutions, à l’avarice.

Lost to all sense of shame, they have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, in order to practice every kind of impurity without restraint.

20 Pour vous, ce n’est pas ainsi que vous avez été instruits touchant le Christ;

But far different is the lesson you learned from the Christ – if, that is, you really listened to him,

21 Si cependant vous l’avez écouté, et si vous avez appris de lui, selon la vérité de sa doctrine,

and through union with him were taught the truth, as it is to be found in Jesus.

22 À dépouiller, par rapport à votre première vie, le vieil homme qui se corrompt par les désirs de l’erreur.

For you learned with regard to your former way of living that you must cast off your old nature, which, yielding to deluding passions, grows corrupt;

23 Renouvelez-vous dans l’esprit de votre âme,

that the spirit of your minds must be constantly renewed;

24 Et revêtez-vous de l’homme nouveau, qui a été créé selon Dieu dans la justice et la sainteté de la vérité.

and that you must clothe yourselves in that new nature which was created to resemble God, with the righteousness and holiness springing from the truth.

25 C’est, pourquoi, quittant le mensonge, que chacun dise la vérité avec son prochain, parce que nous sommes membres les uns des autres.

Since, therefore, you have cast off what is false, you must every one of you speak the truth to your neighbors. For we are united to one another like the parts of a body.

26 Irritez-vous et ne péchez point; que le soleil ne se couche point sur votre colère.

Be angry, yet do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger;

27 Ne donnez point lieu au diable.

and give no opportunity to the devil.

28 Que celui qui dérobait ne dérobe plus, mais plutôt qu’il s’occupe, en travaillant de ses mains, à ce qui est bon, pour avoir de quoi donner à qui souffre du besoin.

Let the person who steals steal no longer, but rather they should toil with their hands at honest work, so that they may have something to share with anyone in need.

29 Qu’aucun discours mauvais ne sorte de votre bouche; que s’il en sort quelqu’un, qu’il soit bon pour édifier la foi, et donner la grâce à ceux qui l’écoutent;

Never let any foul word pass your lips, but only such good words as the occasion demands, so that they may be a help to those who hear them.

30 Et ne contristez point l’Esprit-Saint, dont vous avez reçu le sceau pour le jour de la rédemption.

And do not grieve God’s Holy Spirit; for it was through that Spirit that God sealed you as his, against the day of redemption.

31 Que toute amertume, toute colère, tout emportement, toute clameur et toute diffamation soit bannie de vous, avec toute malice.

Let all bitterness, passion, anger, brawling, and abusive language be banished from among you, as well as all malice.

32 Mais soyez bons les uns envers les autres, miséricordieux, vous pardonnant mutuellement, comme Dieu lui-même vous a pardonné en Jésus-Christ.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, ready to forgive one another, just as God, in Christ, forgave you.
