Ecclésiaste 9
1 J’ai agité toutes ces choses dans mon cœur, afin de tâcher de les comprendre. Il y a des justes et des sages, et leurs œuvres sont dans la main de Dieu: et cependant l’homme ne sait s’il est digne d’amour ou de haine;
For all this did I reflect over in my heart and to explain all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their services, are in the hand of God: that man knoweth neither love nor hatred; it is all [ordained] before them;
2 Mais toutes choses sont réservées pour l’avenir, étant incertaines dans le présent, parce que tout arrive également au juste et à l’impie, au bon et au méchant, au pur et à l’impur, à celui qui immole des victimes et à celui qui méprise les sacrifices; comme est le bon, ainsi est le pécheur; comme est le parjure, ainsi est celui-là même qui jure la vérité.
Every thing as it is to happen to all; there is but one occurrence for the righteous, and for the wicked; for the good and for the clean, and for the unclean; and for him that sacrificeth, and for him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
3 Ce qu’il y a de plus fâcheux parmi toutes les choses qui se passent sous le soleil, c’est que les mêmes choses arrivent à tous: de là aussi les cœurs des fils des hommes sont remplis de malice et de mépris durant leur vie, et après cela ils seront conduits aux enfers.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one occurrence for all, and that also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and that madness is in their heart while they live, and after this they go to the dead.
4 Il n’est personne qui vive toujours et qui en ait même l’espérance; mieux vaut un chien vivant qu’un lion mort.
For whoever is yet united with all the living hath still hope; for a living dog fareth better than a dead lion.
5 Car les vivants savent qu’ils doivent mourir; mais les morts ne connaissent plus rien, et ils n’ont plus de récompense, parce qu’à l’oubli a été livrée leur mémoire.
For the living know that they will die; but the dead know not the least; nor have they longer any reward; for their memory is forgotten.
6 L’amour aussi et la haine et l’envie ont péri avec eux, et ils n’ont point de part en ce siècle, ni dans l’œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, are now already lost; and they will have never more a portion in all that is done under the sun.
7 Va donc et mange ton pain dans l’allégresse, et bois ton vin dans la joie; parce qu’à Dieu plaisent tes œuvres.
Go, eat with joy thy bread, and drink with a merry heart thy wine, if God have already received thy works in favor.
8 Qu’en tout temps tes vêtements soient blancs, et que l’huile ne cesse pas de parfumer ta tête.
At all times let thy garments be white, and let oil not be wanting on thy head.
9 Jouis complètement de la vie avec l’épouse que tu aimes tous les jours de ta vie fugitive, jours qui t’ont été donnés sous le ciel, durant tout le temps de ta vanité: car c’est là ta part dans la vie et dans ton travail auquel tu travailles sous le soleil.
Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which God hath given thee under the sun, [yea, ] all the days of thy vanity; for this is thy portion in this life, and in thy toil with which thou toilest under the sun.
10 Tout ce que peut faire ta main, fais-le promptement, parce que ni œuvre, ni raison, ni sagesse, ni science ne seront aux enfers, où tu cours. (Sheol h7585)
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do with thy might, that do; for there is no work, nor experience, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the nether world, whither thou goest.— (Sheol h7585)
11 Je me suis tourné vers une autre chose, et j’ai vu sous le soleil que la course n’est pas pour les prompts, ni la guerre pour les vaillants, ni le pain pour les sages, ni les richesses pour les savants, ni la faveur pour les ouvriers habiles, mais le temps et le hasard font toutes choses.
I turned about, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the mighty; and that also the wise have no bread, nor yet the men of understanding riches, nor yet men of knowledge favor; but time and fate will overtake them all.
12 L’homme ne connaît pas sa fin: et comme les poissons sont pris à l’hameçon, et comme les oiseaux sont retenus par le lacs, ainsi sont pris les hommes par un temps mauvais, lorsque tout d’un coup il leur survient.
For man also knoweth not his time, like the fishes that are caught in an evil net, and like the birds that are caught in the snare: like these are the sons of men ensnared at an evil time, when it falleth upon them suddenly.
13 J’ai aussi vu sous le soleil cette sagesse, et je l’ai estimée très grande:
Also in this manner have I seen wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
14 Une petite cité, et peu d’hommes en elle: il vint contre elle un grand roi, il l’investit, bâtit des forts autour, et le siège fut complet.
There was a little city, and the men therein were few; and there came against it a great king, who enclosed it, and built around it great works of siege;
15 Or, il s’y trouva un homme pauvre et sage, et il délivra la ville par sa sagesse; et nul dans la suite ne se ressouvint de cet homme pauvre.
But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he delivered the city by his wisdom; yet no man had thought of that same poor man.
16 Et je disais, moi, que la sagesse vaut mieux que la force. Comment donc la sagesse du pauvre a-t-elle été méprisée, et ses paroles n’ont-elles pas été écoutées?
Then said I, Wisdom is better than might: although the poor man's wisdom is held in contempt, and his words are not heard.
17 Les paroles des sages sont écoutées en silence, plus que les cris du prince parmi les insensés.
The words of wise men heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
18 Vaut mieux la sagesse que les armes guerrières: et celui qui pèche en un seul point perdra de grands biens.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner causes much good to be lost.
