Deutéronome 4
1 Maintenant, Israël, écoute les préceptes et les ordonnances que moi je t’enseigne, afin que les pratiquant, tu vives, et que tu possèdes, en y entrant, la terre que le Seigneur Dieu de vos pères va vous donner.
Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.
2 Vous n’ajouterez point à la parole que je vous dis, et vous n’en retrancherez point: gardez les commandements du Seigneur votre Dieu que moi, je vous prescris.
You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
3 Vos yeux ont vu tout ce qu’a fait le Seigneur contre Béelphégor, comment il a brisé tous ses adorateurs du milieu de vous.
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal Peor; for all the men who followed Baal Peor, the LORD your God has destroyed them from the midst of you.
4 Mais vous qui êtes attachés au Seigneur votre Dieu, vous vivez tous jusqu’au présent jour.
But you who were faithful to the LORD your God are all alive this day.
5 Vous savez que je vous ai enseigné les préceptes et les lois, comme m’a commandé le Seigneur mon Dieu: ainsi, vous les pratiquerez dans la terre que vous allez posséder;
Look, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it.
6 Vous les observerez et les accomplirez par vos œuvres. Car telles sont votre sagesse et votre intelligence devant les peuples, afin qu’entendant parler de tous ces préceptes, ils disent: Voici un peuple sage et intelligent, une grande nation.
Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people."
7 Et il n’est point d’autre nation, si grande qu’elle soit, qui ait des dieux s’approchant délie, comme notre Dieu, qui est présent à toutes nos prières.
For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as the LORD our God is whenever we call on him?
8 Quelle est, en effet, l’autre nation assez illustre pour qu’elle ait des cérémonies, des ordonnances justes, et toute cette loi que j’exposerai aujourd’hui devant vos yeux?
What great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
9 Garde-toi donc toi-même et ton âme soigneusement. N’oublie point les paroles qu’ont vues tes yeux, et qu’elles ne sortent point de ton cœur tous les jours de ta vie. Tu les enseigneras à tes fils et à tes petits-fils,
Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children's children;
10 Depuis le jour que tu t’es trouvé devant le Seigneur ton Dieu à Horeb, quand le Seigneur me parla, disant: Assemble auprès de moi le peuple, afin qu’ils entendent mes paroles, et qu’ils apprennent à me craindre tout le temps qu’ils vivront sur la terre, et qu’ils instruisent leurs enfants.
the day that you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, "Assemble me the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children."
11 Et vous vous approchâtes du pied de la montagne, qui brûlait jusqu’au ciel; et il y avait sur elle des ténèbres, un nuage et une obscurité.
You came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.
12 Et le Seigneur vous parla du milieu du feu. Vous entendîtes la voix de ses paroles, mais de forme, vous n’en vîtes absolument point.
The LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice.
13 Il vous fit connaître son alliance, qu’il vous ordonna d’accomplir, et les dix paroles qu’il écrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.
14 Et à moi, il me commanda, en ce temps-là, de vous enseigner des cérémonies et des ordonnances que vous deviez accomplir dans la terre que vous allez posséder.
The LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.
15 Gardez donc soigneusement vos âmes. Vous n’avez vu aucune représentation au jour que le Seigneur vous parla à Horeb, du milieu du feu;
Therefore watch yourselves carefully; for you saw no kind of form on the day that the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire.
16 De peur que, séduits, vous ne vous fassiez quelque représentation taillée au ciseau, ou bien quelque image d’homme ou de femme;
Lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself an engraved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
17 Quelque représentation de toutes les bêtes qui sont sur la terre, ou des oiseaux qui volent sous le ciel,
the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
18 Et des reptiles qui se meuvent sur la terre, ou des poissons qui sous la terre demeurent dans les eaux;
the likeness of any crawling creature that crawls on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the land;
19 De peur que, les yeux levés au ciel, tu ne voies le soleil, la lune et tous les astres du ciel, et que, séduit par l’erreur, tu ne les adores, et tu n’offres un culte à des choses que le Seigneur ton Dieu a créées pour servir à toutes les nations qui sont sous le ciel.
and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky.
20 Pour vous, le Seigneur vous a tirés et ramenés de la fournaise de fer de l’Egypte, pour avoir un peuple héréditaire, comme il est au présent jour.
But God has taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as at this day.
21 Et le Seigneur s’est irrité contre moi, à cause de vos discours, et il a juré que je ne passerai pas le Jourdain, et que je n’entrerai pas dans la terre excellente qu’il va vous donner.
Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance:
22 Voici donc que je meurs en ce pays; je ne passerai point le Jourdain; vous, vous le passerez, et vous posséderez cette belle terre.
but I must die in this land, I must not go over the Jordan; but you shall go over, and possess that good land.
23 Prends garde d’oublier jamais l’alliance du Seigneur ton Dieu, qu’il a établie avec toi, et de te faire quelque représentation taillée au ciseau des choses dont le Seigneur a défendu d’en faire,
Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you an engraved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you.
24 Parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est un feu consumant, un Dieu jaloux.
For the LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.
25 Si vous engendrez des enfants et des petits-enfants, et que vous demeuriez dans cette terre, et que, séduits, vous fassiez quelque représentation, commettant le mal devant le Seigneur votre Dieu, en sorte que vous le provoquiez au courroux,
When you shall father children, and children's children, and you shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make an engraved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, to provoke him to anger;
26 J’invoque à témoin aujourd’hui le ciel et la terre que bientôt vous serez exterminés de la terre, que, le Jourdain passé, vous allez posséder; vous n’y habiterez pas longtemps, mais le Seigneur vous détruira,
I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto you go over the Jordan to possess it; you shall not prolong your days on it, but shall utterly be destroyed.
27 Et vous dispersera dans tous les peuples, et vous resterez en petit nombre parmi les nations, chez lesquelles le Seigneur doit vous conduire.
The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations, where the LORD will drive you.
28 Et là vous servirez des dieux qui ont été fabriqués par la main des hommes, du bois et de la pierre, qui ne voient, ni n’entendent, ni ne mangent, ni ne flairent.
There you shall serve other gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29 Mais, lorsque tu chercheras là le Seigneur ton Dieu, tu le trouveras, si cependant c’est de tout ton cœur que tu le cherches, et dans toute l’affliction de ton âme.
But from there you shall seek the LORD your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30 Après que te seront arrivées toutes les choses qui ont été prédites, tu reviendras, dans le dernier temps, au Seigneur ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix,
When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to the LORD your God, and listen to his voice:
31 Parce que c’est un Dieu miséricordieux, le Seigneur ton Dieu; il ne t’abandonnera point, et il ne te détruira pas entièrement, et il n’oubliera pas l’alliance qu’il a jurée à tes pères.
for the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.
32 Demande aux jours anciens qui ont été avant toi, depuis le jour que Dieu a créé l’homme sur la terre, depuis une extrémité du ciel jusqu’à l’autre extrémité, s’il a été fait jamais une chose semblable, ou si jamais il a été connu
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created humankind on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as this great thing is, or has been heard like it?
33 Qu’un peuple ait entendu la voix de Dieu, parlant du milieu du feu, comme tu l’as entendue, en conservant la vie;
Did a people ever hear the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?
34 Si Dieu a entrepris devenir et de prendre pour lui une nation au milieu des nations, par des épreuves, des signes et des prodiges, par la guerre, par une main forte, un bras étendu et d’horribles visions, selon tout ce qu’a fait pour vous le Seigneur votre Dieu dans l’Egypte, tes yeux le voyant,
Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
35 Afin que tu susses que c’est le Seigneur lui-même qui est Dieu, et qu’il n’en est pas d’autre que lui.
It was shown to you so that you might know that the LORD is God. There is no one else besides him.
36 Du haut du ciel il t’a fait entendre sa voix pour l’instruire, et sur la terre il t’a montré son feu très ardent, et tu as entendu ses paroles qui sortaient du milieu du feu
Out of heaven he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you: and on earth he made you to see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.
37 Parce qu’il a aimé tes pères, et qu’il a choisi leur postérité après eux; et il t’a retiré de l’Egypte, te précédant avec sa grande puissance,
Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their descendants after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;
38 Pour détruire à ton entrée des nations très grandes et plus fortes que loi, et pour l’introduire, et te donner leur terre en possession, comme tu vois au présent jour.
to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day.
39 Sache donc aujourd’hui, et pense en ton cœur, que c’est le Seigneur lui-même qui est Dieu dans le ciel en haut, et sur la terre en bas, et qu’il n’en est pas d’autre.
Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
40 Garde ses préceptes et ses commandements, que moi, je te prescris, afin que bien l’arrivé, à toi et à tes fils après toi, et que tu demeures longtemps sur la terre que le Seigneur ton Dieu va te donner.
You shall keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD your God gives you, forever.
41 Alors Moïse sépara trois villes au-delà du Jourdain vers la partie orientale,
Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise;
42 Afin que s’y réfugie celui qui sans le vouloir aura tué son prochain, et qui n’aura pas été son ennemi un ou deux jours auparavant, et qu’il puisse se retirer dans une de ces villes:
that the manslayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unawares, and did not hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:
43 Bosor dans le désert, qui est située dans la plate campagne de la tribu de Ruben; Ramolli en Galaad, qui est dans la tribu de Gad, et Golan en Basan, qui est dans la tribu de Manassé.
Bezer in the wilderness, on the plateau, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
44 Telle est la loi que Moïse exposa devant les enfants d’Israël;
This is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:
45 Et telles sont les lois, les cérémonies et les ordonnances qu’il annonça aux enfants d’Israël, quand ils furent sortis de l’Egypte,
these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt,
46 Au delà du Jourdain dans la vallée, contre le temple de Phogor dans la terre de Séhon, roi de l’Amorrhéen, qui habita à Hésébon, et que battit Moïse. Les enfants d Israël aussi, sortis de l’Egypte,
beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel struck, when they came forth out of Egypt.
47 Possédèrent sa terre, et la terre d’Og, roi de Basan, deux rois des Amorrhéens qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, vers le levant,
They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise;
48 Depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord du torrent d’Arnon, jusqu’à la montagne de Sion, qui est appelée aussi Hermon,
from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon),
49 Toute la plaine au-delà du Jourdain, vers la partie orientale, jusqu’à la mer du désert, et jusqu’au pied de la montagne de Phasga.
and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
