Actes 28
1 Après nous être ainsi sauvés, nous apprîmes que l’île s’appelait Malte. Et les barbares nous montrèrent beaucoup d’humanité.
When we were all safe, we found that the island was called Malta.
2 Car ayant allumé du feu, à cause de la pluie tombante et du froid, ils nous ranimaient.
The natives showed us marked kindness, for they lit a fire and took us all under shelter, because it had come on to rain and was cold.
3 Alors Paul ayant rassemblé une certaine quantité de sarments, et les ayant mis au feu, une vipère que la chaleur en fit sortir s’élança sur sa main.
Paul had gathered a quantity of dry sticks and laid them on the fire, when a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened on his hand.
4 Dès que les barbares virent, cette bête qui pendait à sa main: ils se dirent l’un à l’autre: Assurément, cet homme est un meurtrier, puisque, après avoir échappé à la mer, la vengeance ne permet pas qu’il vive.
When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another: “Evidently this man is a murderer, for though he has been saved from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.”
5 Et lui, secouant la bête dans le feu, n’en souffrit aucun mal.
However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and took no harm.
6 Mais eux croyaient qu’il allait enfler, tomber soudainement et mourir. Et après avoir attendu longtemps, voyant qu’il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent de sentiments, et dirent que c’était un dieu.
The natives were expecting inflammation to set in, or that he would suddenly fall dead; but, after waiting for a long time, and seeing that there was nothing amiss with him, they changed their minds and said that he was a God.
7 En ces lieux-là se trouvaient des terres appartenant au premier de l’île, nommé Publius, lequel, nous recevant, se montra, durant trois jours, très bon envers nous.
In that neighbourhood there was an estate belonging to the Governor of the island, whose name was Publius. He took us up to his house, and for three days entertained us most courteously.
8 Or il se rencontra que le père de Publius était au lit, tourmenté de la fièvre et de la dyssenterie. Paul alla le voir, et ayant prié, et lui ayant imposé les mains, il le guérit.
It happened that the father of Publius was lying ill of fever and dysentery. So Paul went to see him; and, after praying, he placed his hands on him and cured him.
9 Cela fait, tous ceux qui, dans l’île, avaient des maladies, venaient, et étaient guéris;
After this, all the people in the island who had any illness came to Paul, and were cured.
10 Ils nous rendirent aussi beaucoup d’honneurs, et, quand nous nous mîmes en mer, ils nous pourvurent de toutes les choses qui nous étaient nécessaires.
They also presented us with many gifts, and when we set sail they put supplies of necessaries on board.
11 Au bout de trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un vaisseau d’Alexandrie, qui avait hiverné dans l’île, et qui avait pour enseigne les castors.
After three months, we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island. She was an Alexandrian vessel, and had the Twin Sons of Zeus for her figure-head.
12 Et étant arrivés à Syracuse, nous y demeurâmes trois jours.
We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days,
13 De là, faisant le tour de la côte, nous vînmes à Rhégium; et un jour après, un vent ayant soufflé du midi, nous vînmes à Pouzzoles,
and from there we worked to windward and so got to Rhegium. A day later a south wind sprang up and took us to Puteoli in two days.
14 Où nous trouvâmes de nos frères, qui nous prièrent de demeurer avec eux sept jours; et après nous partîmes pour Rome.
There we found some of the Brethren, and were urged to stay a week with them; after which we went on to Rome.
15 Ce qu’ayant appris, nos frères de Rome vinrent au-devant de nous jusqu’au forum d’Appius et aux trois Tavernes. Lorsque Paul les eut vus rendant grâces à Dieu, il fut rempli de confiance.
The Brethren there had heard about us, and came out as far as the Market of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At sight of them Paul thanked God and was much cheered.
16 Quand nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer seul avec le soldat qui le gardait.
On our reaching Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, except for the soldier who was in charge of him.
17 Après le troisième jour, il fit appeler les premiers d’entre les Juifs. Et lorsqu’ils se furent assemblés, il leur disait: Hommes, mes frères, n’ayant rien fait contre le temple ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, j’ai été chargé de liens à Jérusalem, et livré aux mains des Romains,
Three days after our arrival, Paul invited the leading Jews to meet him; and, when they came, he spoke to them as follows: “Brothers, although I had done nothing hostile to the interests of our nation or to our ancestral customs, yet I was sent from Jerusalem as a prisoner, and handed over to the Romans.
18 Lesquels, après m’avoir interrogé, ont voulu me renvoyer, parce qu’il n’y avait aucune cause de mort en moi.
The Romans, when they had examined me, were ready to release me, because there was nothing in my conduct deserving death.
19 Mais les Juifs s’y opposant, j’ai été forcé d’en appeler à César, non que j’aie quelque sujet d’accuser ma nation.
But, as the Jews opposed my release, I was compelled to appeal to the Emperor — not, indeed, that I had any charge to make against my own nation.
20 Voilà donc pourquoi j’ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler. Car c’est à cause de l’espérance d’Israël que j’ai été lié de cette chaîne.
This, then, is my reason for urging you to come to see me and talk with me; because it is for the sake of the Hope of Israel that I am here in chains.”
21 Ils lui répondirent: Nous n’avons point reçu de lettre de Judée à ton sujet, et aucun frère n’est venu, qui nous ait parlé, ou nous ait dit aucun mal de toi.
“We,” was their reply, “have not had any letter about you from Judea, nor have any of our fellow-Jews come and reported or said anything bad about you.
22 Mais nous serions bien aises d’apprendre de toi-même ce que tu penses; car ce que nous savons de cette secte, c’est que partout on la combat.
But we shall be glad to hear from you what your views are, for, with regard to this sect, we are well aware that it is spoken against on all sides.”
23 Lorsqu’ils lui eurent marqué un jour, ils vinrent en grand nombre le trouver dans l’hôtellerie; et il leur expliquait, et confirmait par des témoignages le royaume de Dieu, s’efforçant, du matin au soir, de les persuader de ce qui regarde Jésus, par la loi de Moïse et par les prophètes.
They then fixed a day with him, and came to the place where he was staying, in even larger numbers, when Paul proceeded to lay the subject before them. He bore his testimony to the Kingdom of God, and tried to convince them about Jesus, by arguments drawn from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets — speaking from morning till evening.
24 Et les uns croyaient ce qu’il disait, et les autres ne le croyaient pas.
Some were inclined to accept what he said; others, however, rejected it.
25 Et comme ils ne s’accordaient pas entre eux, ils se retiraient, Paul disant ce seul mot: C’est avec raison que l’Esprit-Saint a parlé à nos pères par la bouche du prophète Isaïe,
So, as they disagreed among themselves, they began to disperse, Paul adding only — “True, indeed, was the declaration made by the Holy Spirit, through the Prophet Isaiah to your ancestors —
26 Disant: Va vers ce peuple, et dis-lui: Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point; regardant, vous regarderez, et vous ne verrez point.
‘Go to this nation and say — “You will hear with your ears without ever understanding, And, though you have eyes, you will see without ever perceiving.”
27 Car le cœur de ce peuple s’est appesanti, leurs oreilles sont devenues sourdes, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux; de peur qu’ils ne voient de leurs yeux, qu’ils n’entendent de leurs oreilles, qu’ils ne comprennent de leur cœur, qu’ils ne se convertissent et que je ne les guérisse.
For the mind of this nation has grown dense, And their ears are dull of hearing, Their eyes also have they closed; Lest some day they should see with their eyes, And with their ears they should hear, And in their mind they should understand, and should turn — And I should heal them.’
28 Qu’il soit donc connu de vous, que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux gentils, et qu’eux écouteront.
Understand, then, that this Salvation of God was sent for the Gentiles; and they will listen.”
29 Lorsqu’il leur eut dit ces choses, les Juifs le quittèrent, ayant de grands débats entre eux.
30 Or il demeura deux ans entiers dans un logis qu’il avait loué; et il recevait tous ceux qui venaient à lui,
For two whole years Paul stayed in a house which he rented for himself, welcoming all who came to see him,
31 Prêchant le royaume de Dieu, et enseignant ce qui regarde Jésus-Christ, en toute assurance et sans empêchement.
proclaiming the Kingdom of God, and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ, with perfect fearlessness, unmolested.
