Actes 27
1 Lorsqu’il eut été résolu que Paul irait par mer en Italie, et qu’on le remettrait, avec d’autres prisonniers, entre les mains d’un nommé Julius, centurion de la cohorte Augusta,
And when it was determined that we should sail away into Italy, they committed both Paul and certain other prisoners to the centurion, Julius by name, of the band of Augustus.
2 Montant sur un navire d’Adrumette, nous levâmes l’ancre, commençant à naviguer le long des côtes d’Asie, et ayant toujours avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.
And having embarked on an Adramyttium ship, about to sail to those places along Asia, we set sail; Aristarchus, the Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
3 Le jour suivant, nous vînmes à Sidon. Or Julius, traitant Paul avec humanité, lui permit d’aller chez ses amis, et de prendre soin de lui-même.
And on the following day we disembarked at Sidon; and Julius, treating Paul kindly, permitted him having gone to his friends to receive their benefactions.
4 Et quand nous fûmes partis de là, nous naviguâmes au-dessous de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.
And having embarked from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary:
5 Traversant ensuite la mer de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous vînmes à Lystre, ville de Lycie;
and having sailed through the sea which is opposite Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came down into Myra of Lycia.
6 Mais le centurion trouvant là un navire d’Alexandrie, qui faisait voile pour l’Italie, il nous y fit embarquer.
And there the centurion having found an Alexandrian ship sailing into Italy; transferred us into it.
7 Après avoir navigué lentement pendant bien des jours, et être à peine arrivés devant Cnide, le vent nous arrêtant, nous côtoyâmes la Crète, du côté de Salmone;
And sailing slowly during many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not favoring us, we sailed under Crete, opposite Salmone;
8 Et suivant la côte avec difficulté, nous vînmes en un lieu appelé Bonsports, près duquel était la ville de Thalasse.
and, with difficulty passing by it, we came into a certain place called Fair Havens, near to which was the city Lasea.
9 Beaucoup de temps s’étant ainsi écoulé, et comme la navigation n’était déjà plus sûre, le temps du jeûne se trouvant déjà passé, Paul les consolait,
And much time passing away, and navigation being already unsafe, because the Fast had already passed by, Paul exhorted them,
10 Leur disant: Hommes, je vois que la navigation commence à n’être pas sans péril et sans grand dommage, non seulement pour la cargaison et le vaisseau lui-même, mais aussi pour nos âmes.
saying to them, Men, I perceive that this voyage is going to be with peril and much loss, not only with the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.
11 Mais le centurion croyait plus au pilote et au patron qu’à ce que Paul disait.
But the centurion trusted the pilot and midshipman, rather than the things spoken by Paul.
12 Et comme le port n’était pas propre pour hiverner, la plupart émirent l’avis d’en partir, afin, s’il se pouvait, de gagner Phénice, port de Crète, qui regarde l’Africus et le Corus, et d’y passer l’hiver.
And the harbor being unsafe for spending the winter, most of them projected to the council to depart thence, if perchance they might be able, having arrived into Phoenix, to spend the winter there; a harbor of Crete, looking toward the southeast and the northeast.
13 Un vent doux du midi s’étant levé, et eux pensant qu’ils accompliraient leur dessein, levèrent l’ancre d’Asson et côtoyèrent la Crète.
And the south wind blowing, thinking they could achieve their purpose, lifting up a sail, they went coasting along near Crete.
14 Mais, peu après, il se leva contre l’île un vent de typhon, qui est appelé euro-aquilon.
Not long afterward a typhonic wind, called Euraquilo, set in against her;
15 Et comme le vaisseau était emporté, et ne pouvait résister au vent, nous nous laissâmes flotter avec le vaisseau au gré du vent.
and the ship having been seized, and being unable to resist the wind, having given away to it, we were borne along.
16 Et, poussés au-dessous d’une île qui est appelée Cauda, à peine pûmes-nous être maîtres de l’esquif.
And running under a certain island called Clauda, we were scarcely able to get possession of the boat:
17 Lorsque les matelots l’eurent enfin tiré à nous, ils lièrent le vaisseau en se faisant aider, et, craignant de donner sur la syrte, ils abaissèrent le mât, et s’abandonnèrent ainsi à la mer.
which lifting up they used helps, under-girding the ship; and fearing lest they might fall into Syrtis, lowering the gear, they were thus carried along.
18 Et comme nous étions fortement battus de la tempête, le jour suivant ils jetèrent les marchandises à la mer;
And we being tossed violently by the storm, they were successively making the casting out,
19 Le troisième jour, ils jetèrent aussi, de leurs propres mains, les agrès du vaisseau.
and on the third day with their own hands they threw overboard the tackling of the ship;
20 Or, le soleil ni aucun autre astre n’ayant paru pendant plusieurs jours, et une violente tempête sévissant, nous avions perdu tout espoir de salut.
and neither sun nor stars appearing for many days, and there being no small tempest on us, finally all hope of saving us was taken away.
21 Et comme depuis longtemps on n’avait pas mangé, Paul se tenant au milieu d’eux, dit: Hommes, vous auriez dû, m’écoutant, ne point quitter la Crète, et vous épargner ainsi ce péril et cette perte,
And there being much fasting, Paul standing in their midst, said, O men, truly it behooved you obeying me, not to depart from Crete, and incur this injury and loss.
22 Cependant je vous exhorte à prendre courage, parce que aucune de vos âmes ne périra; il n’y aura que le vaisseau.
And now I exhort you to take courage: for there will be no loss of the life of you, except the ship.
23 Car un ange du Dieu à qui je suis et que je sers, s’est présenté à moi cette nuit,
For the angel of God, whose I am, and whom indeed I serve, stood by me this night,
24 Disant: Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César; et voilà que Dieu t’a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
saying, Fear not, Paul; for it behooveth thee to stand before Caesar: and, behold, God has given thee all those sailing along with thee.
25 C’’est pourquoi, hommes, ayez bon courage; car j’ai foi en Dieu, qu’il en sera comme il m’a été dit.
Therefore cheer up, O men: for I believe God, that it shall be according to the manner which He has spoken to me.
26 Mais il faut que nous soyons jetés contre une certaine île.
But it behooves us to fall upon a certain island.
27 Or, quand la quatorzième nuit fut venue, nous naviguant dans l’Adriatique, vers le milieu de la nuit, les matelots crurent entrevoir quelque terre
And when it was the fourteenth night, we being borne along in the Adriatic Sea, about the middle of the night the sailors surmised that some country was coming to them.
28 Jetant aussitôt la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses, et s’éloignant un peu au-delà, ils trouvèrent quinze brasses.
And having sounded, they found it twenty fathoms; and moving on a short distance, and sounding again, they found it fifteen fathoms;
29 Alors craignant de heurter contre quelque écueil, jetant de la poupe quatre ancres, ils souhaitaient vivement qu’il fît jour.
and fearing lest they may fall out against rough places, casting four anchors from the stern, they were praying that the day should come.
30 Les matelots, cherchant à fuir du vaisseau, après avoir mis l’esquif en mer, sous prétexte de commencer à jeter des ancres du côté de la proue,
And the sailors seeking to escape from the ship, and lowering the boat into the sea, with a pretext as about to cast anchors from the prow,
31 Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: Si ces hommes ne restent pas dans le vaisseau, vous-mêmes ne pouvez vous sauver.
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, Unless these may remain in the ship, you are not able to be saved.
32 Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordages de l’esquif et le laissèrent aller.
Then the soldiers cut the ropes away from the boat, and let it fall out.
33 Et comme le jour commençait à se faire, Paul les exhorta tous à prendre de la nourriture, disant: C’est aujourd’hui le quatorzième jour que vous passez à jeun dans l’attente, ne prenant’ rien.
But until the day was about to come, Paul exhorted all to take food, saying, Already this day you remain in a state of solicitude, the fourteenth day, receiving nothing.
34 C’est pourquoi je vous exhorte, pour votre salut, à prendre de la nourriture; car pas un cheveu de la tête d’aucun de vous ne périra.
Therefore I exhort you to take food: for this is for your safety: for not a hair of your head shall perish.
35 Et, quand il eut dit ces choses, prenant du pain, il rendit grâces à Dieu en présence de tous; et l’ayant rompu, il se mit à manger.
And having spoken these words, and taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and breaking it, began to eat.
36 Alors tous les autres ayant repris courage, mangèrent aussi.
And all becoming cheerful, themselves also took food.
37 Or nous étions dans le vaisseau deux cent soixante-seize personnes en tout.
And we were two hundred and seventy-six souls in the ship.
38 Et quand ils furent rassasiés, ils allégèrent le vaisseau en jetant le blé dans la mer.
And having been revived by the food, they lightened the ship, casting the wheat over into the sea.
39 Lorsque le jour fut venu, ils ne reconnaissaient point la terre; mais ils apercevaient un golfe qui avait un rivage, sur lequel ils songeaient à échouer le vaisseau s’ils le pouvaient.
And when it was day, they did not recognize the land: but discovered a certain gulf having a shore, into which they determined, if possible, to thrust out the ship.
40 Ainsi, après avoir levé les ancres, et en même temps lâché les attaches des gouvernails, ils s’abandonnèrent à la mer; et ayant dressé l’artimon selon le vent qui soufflait, ils tiraient vers le rivage.
And having knocked off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders, and raising up the main sail to the blowing wind, they made for the shore.
41 Mais ayant rencontré une langue de terre baignée par deux mers de deux côtés, ils échouèrent le vaisseau; et la proue s’étant enfoncée, demeurait immobile; mais la poupe se déjoignait par la violence des vagues.
And having fallen into a place where two seas met, they broke the ship, and indeed the prow, sticking fast, remained motionless, but the stern was torn off by the violence (of the wind).
42 Alors le dessein des soldats fut de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu’un d’eux ne s’enfuît en nageant.
And the counsel of the soldiers was that they should kill the prisoners, lest some one, having outswum them, might escape:
43 Mais le centurion, voulant sauver Paul, les en empêcha et ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager, de se jeter à la mer les premiers, et de se sauver en gagnant la terre.
but the centurion, wishing to save Paul, forbade them from their counsel; and commanded that those who were able to swim, having first thrown themselves overboard, to go to the land;
44 Pour les autres, on les fit passer sur des planches, et quelques-uns sur des débris du vaisseau. Et ainsi il arriva que tous gagnèrent la terre.
and the rest, some on planks, and others on some parts from the ship. And thus it came to pass that all came safe to the land.
