Actes 25

1 Festus donc, étant arrivé dans la province, monta, trois jours après, de Césarée à Jérusalem.

When Festus was come into the province after thre dayes he ascended fro Cesarea vnto Ierusalem.

2 Et les princes des prêtres et les premiers d’entre les Juifs vinrent vers lui pour accuser Paul, et ils le priaient,

Then enformed him the hye prestes and the chefe of the Iewes of Paul. And they besought him

3 Demandant en grâce, qu’il le fit amener à Jérusalem, ayant préparé des embûches pour le tuer en chemin.

and desired faveour agaynst him that he wold sende for him to Ierusalem: and layde awayte for him in the waye to kill him.

4 Mais Festus répondit que Paul était gardé à Césarée, et que lui-même partirait bientôt.

Festus answered that Paul shuld be kept at Cesarea: but that he him selfe wold shortly departe thither.

5 Que les principaux donc d’entre vous (dit-il) descendent ensemble, et, s’il y a quelque crime en cet homme, qu’ils l’accusent.

Let the therfore (sayd he) which amoge you are able to do it come doune with vs and accuse him if ther be eny faute in the man.

6 Or, après avoir passé huit ou dix jours parmi eux, il descendit à Césarée; et le jour suivant, il s’assit sur son tribunal, et ordonna d’amener Paul.

When he had taried there moare then ten dayes he departed vnto Cesarea and the nexte daye sate doune in the iudgemet seate and commaunded Paul to be brought.

7 Lorsqu’on l’eut amené, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem l’entourèrent, l’accusant de beaucoup de crimes graves, qu’ils ne pouvaient prouver,

When he was come the Iewes which were come fro Ierusalem came aboute him and layde many and greveous complayntes agaynst Paul which they coulde not prove

8 Paul se défendant ainsi: Je n’ai rien fait, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni contre César.

as longe as he answered for him selfe that he had nether agaynst the lawe of the Iewes nether agaynst the temple nor yet agaynst Cesar offended eny thinge at all.

9 Mais Festus, qui voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, répondant à Paul, dit: Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem, et y être jugé sur ces choses devant moi?

Festus willinge to do the Iewes a pleasure answered Paul and sayde: wilt thou goo to Ierusalem and there be iudged of these thinges before me?

10 Mais Paul répondit: C’est devant le tribunal de César que je suis: c’est là qu’il faut que je sois jugé. Je n’ai nui en rien aux Juifs, comme vous-même le savez fort bien.

Then sayd Paul: I stonde at Cesars iudgemet seate where I ought to be iudged. To ye Iewes have I no harme done as thou verely well knowest.

11 Car si j’ai nui à quelqu’un ou si j’ai fait quelque chose qui mérite la mort, je ne refuse point de mourir; mais s’il n’en est rien des choses dont ils m’accusent, personne ne peut me livrer à eux. J’en appelle à César.

If I have hurte them or comitted eny thinge worthy of deeth I refuse not to dye. If none of these thinges are where of they accuse me no man owght to delyver me to them. I appeale vnto Cesar.

12 Alors Festus, ayant conféré avec le conseil, répondit: C’est à César que tu en as appelé, c’est devant César que tu iras.

Then spake Festus with deliberacion and answered. Thou hast appealed vnto Cesar: vnto Cesar shalt thou goo.

13 Quelques jours après, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice descendirent à Césarée pour saluer Festus,

After a certayne dayes kinge Agrippa and Bernice came vnto Cesarea to salute Festus.

14 Et comme ils demeurèrent plusieurs jours, Festus parla de Paul au roi, disant: Un certain homme a été laissé ici par Félix comme prisonnier;

And when they had bene there a good ceason Festus rehersed Paules cause vnto ye kynge sayinge: ther is a certayne man left in preson of Felix

15 À son sujet, lorsque j’étais à Jérusalem, les princes des prêtres et les anciens des Juifs sont venus vers moi, demandant une condamnation contre lui.

about whom when I came to Ierusalem the hye prestes and elders of the Iewes enformed me and desyred to have iudgement agaynst him.

16 Je leur ai répondu: Ce n’est pas la coutume des Romains de condamner un homme avant que l’accusé ait ses accusateurs présents, et qu’on lui ait donné lieu de se défendre, pour se laver de l’accusation.

To whom I answered: It is not the maner of the Romayns to delyver eny man that he shuld perisshe before that he which is accused have the accusars before him and have licence to answer for him selfe concerninge ye cryme layde agaynst him:

17 Après donc qu’ils furent venus ici sans aucun délai, le jour suivant, siégeant sur mon tribunal, j’ordonnai d’y amener cet homme.

whe they were come hidder wt out delaye on the morowe I sate to geve iudgement and comaunded ye ma to be brought forthe.

18 Ses accusateurs s’étant présentés, ne lui reprochaient aucun des crimes dont je le soupçonnais coupable;

Agaynst who when ye accusers stode vp they brought none accusacion of soche thinges as I supposed:

19 Mais ils agitaient contre lui quelques questions touchant leur superstition, et un certain Jésus, mort, que Paul affirmait être vivant.

but had certayne questions agaynst him of their awne supersticion and of one Iesus which was ded: whom Paul affirmed to be alyve.

20 Pour moi, hésitant à l’égard d’une question de cette sorte, je lui demandais s’il voulait aller à Jérusalem pour être jugé sur ces choses.

And be cause I douted of soche maner questions I axed him whyther he wolde goo to Ierusalem and there be iudged of these matters.

21 Mais Paul en ayant appelé, pour que sa cause fût réservée à la connaissance d’Auguste, j’ai ordonné qu’on le gardât jusqu’à ce que je l’envoie à César.

Then when Paul had appealed to be kept vnto the knowledge of Cesar I commaunded him to be kept tyll I myght sende him to Cesar.

22 Agrippa dit alors à Festus: Je voulais, moi aussi, entendre cet homme. Demain, répondit Festus, vous l’entendrez.

Agrippa sayd vnto Festus: I wolde also heare ye man my selfe. To morowe (sayde he) thou shalt heare him.

23 Le lendemain donc, Agrippa et Bérénice étant venus en grande pompe, et étant entrés dans la salle des audiences avec les tribuns et les principaux de la ville, Paul fut amené par ordre de Festus.

And on ye morowe when Agrippa was come and Bernice with greate pompe and were entred into the counsell housse with the captaynes and chefe men of the cite at Festus commaundement Paul was brought forth.

24 Et Festus dit: Roi Agrippa, et vous tous qui êtes ici réunis avec nous, vous voyez cet homme, au sujet de qui toute la multitude des Juifs m’a interpellé à Jérusalem, représentant et criant qu’il ne devait pas vivre plus longtemps

And Festus sayde: kynge Agrippa and all men which are heare present wt vs: ye se this man about whom all the multitude of the Iewes have bene with me both at Ierusalem and also here cryinge that he ought not to lyve eny lenger.

25 Pour moi, j’ai reconnu qu’il n’avait rien fait qui méritât la mort; cependant lui-même en ayant appelé à Auguste, j’ai décidé de l’y envoyer.

Yet founde I nothinge worthy of deeth that he had comitted. Neverthelesse seinge that he hath appealed to Cesar I have determined to sende him.

26 Et n’ayant rien de certain à écrire de lui à l’Empereur, je l’ai fait venir devant vous tous, mais principalement devant vous, roi Agrippa, afin que, l’interrogation faite, j’aie quelque chose à écrire.

Of whom I have no certayne thinge to wryte vnto my lorde. Wherfore I have brought him vnto you and specially vnto the kynge Agrippa that after examinacion had I myght have sumwhat to wryte.

27 Car il me semble hors de raison d’envoyer un homme chargé de liens, et de ne pas en faire connaître la cause.

For me thynketh it vnreasonable for to sende a presoner and not to shewe the causes which are layde agaynst him.
