Actes 24

1 Cinq jours après, le prince des prêtres, Ananie, descendit avec quelques anciens, et un certain Tertullus, orateur: lesquels comparurent contre Paul devant le gouverneur.

And after five days, the high-priest Ananias came down with the elders, and one Tertulius an orator, who appeared before the governor against Paul.

2 Or Paul ayant été appelé, Tertullus commença de l’accuser, disant: Jouissant par vous d’une profonde paix, et beaucoup de choses étant redressées par votre prévoyance,

And when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, "As by thee we enjoy much peace, and glorious things are done to this nation by thy prudent administration,

3 Toujours et partout, excellent Félix, nous le reconnaissons, avec toute sorte d’actions de grâces.

we acknowledge it upon all occasions and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

4 Mais pour ne point vous retenir plus longtemps, je vous prie de nous écouter un moment avec toute votre bonté.

But that I may not trespass upon thee too far, I beg thou wouldst hear us a few words with thy wonted goodness.

5 Nous avons trouvé que cet homme, vraie peste, excite le trouble parmi les Juifs répandus dans le monde entier, et qu’il est chef de la secte séditieuse des Nazaréens;

For having found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ring-leader of the sect of the Nazarenes,

6 Il a même tenté de profaner le temple; et l’ayant saisi, nous avons voulu le juger suivant notre loi.

and attempting to profane the temple, we apprehended him, and would have judged him according to our law.

7 Mais le tribun Lysias survenant, l’a arraché avec une grande violence de nos mains,

But Lysias the tribune came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, commanding his accusers to come unto thee:

8 Ordonnant que ses accusateurs vinssent vers vous; c’est par lui que vous pourrez vous-même, l’interrogeant, vous assurer des choses dont nous l’accusons.

from whom thou mayst thyself by examining him come to the knowledge of all these things of which we accuse him."

9 Et les Juifs ajoutèrent que cela était ainsi.

And the Jews also assented, saying, that these things were so.

10 Mais Paul (le gouverneur lui ayant fait signe de parler) répondit: Sachant que depuis plusieurs années, vous êtes établi juge sur ce peuple, je me défendrai avec confiance.

Then Paul, when the governor permitted him to speak, answered in this manner, "As I know that thou hast been many years a judge to this nation, I do the more chearfully answer for myself:

11 Car vous pouvez savoir qu’il n’y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté pour adorer à Jérusalem;

because thou mayst know, that there are not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem:

12 Et ils ne m’ont trouvé disputant avec quelqu’un ou ameutant la foule, ni dans le temple, ni dans la synagogue,

and they neither found me disputing with any one in the temple, or making sedition among the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:

13 Ni dans la ville; et ils ne sauraient vous prouver ce dont ils m’accusent maintenant.

nor can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.

14 Mais ce que je confesse devant vous, c’est que, suivant la secte qu’ils appellent hérésie, je sers mon Père et mon Dieu, croyant à tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi et dans les prophètes;

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way, which they call heresy, so do I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law, and the prophets:

15 Ayant en Dieu l’espérance qu’il y aura une résurrection, qu’eux aussi attendent, de justes et de méchants.

having hope in God, (which they themselves also expect) that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

16 C’est pourquoi je m’efforce d’avoir toujours ma conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

And on this account do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence both towards God and towards men.

17 Mais après plusieurs années, je suis venu pour faire des aumônes à ma nation, et à Dieu des offrandes et des vœux.

Now after several years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

18 C’est dans ces exercices qu’ils m’ont trouvé dans le temple, sans concours ni tumulte.

Upon which some Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude nor with tumult:

19 Et ce sont certains Juifs d’Asie, lesquels auraient dû se présenter devant vous et m’accuser, s’ils avaient quelque chose contre moi;

who ought to have been here before thee, and make good their charge, if they had any thing against me.

20 Ou bien que ceux-ci disent s’ils ont trouvé en moi quelque iniquité, quand j’ai comparu devant le conseil;

Or let these themselves say, if they found any crime in me, when I stood before the sanhedrim;

21 Si ce n’est à l’égard de cette seule parole que j’ai prononcée hautement étant au milieu d’eux: C’est à cause de la résurrection des morts, que suis aujourd’hui jugé par vous.

unless for this one expression, that I cried out when I stood among them, For the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day."

22 Mais Félix qui connaissait très bien cette voie, les remit, disant: Quand le tribun Lysias sera venu, je vous écouterai.

And when Felix heard these things he put them off, (for he had been more particularly informed concerning this way of religion, ) and said, When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will thoroughly examine your matters.

23 Et il commanda au centurion de garder Paul, mais de lui laisser du repos, et de n’empêcher aucun des siens de le servir.

And he commanded the centurion to keep Paul secure, and to let him have some liberty, and to hinder none of his friends from assisting him or coming to him.

24 Or quelques jours après, Félix venant avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était Juive, appela Paul, et l’entendit sur ce qui touche la foi dans le Christ-Jésus.

Some days after Felix coming with his wife Drusilla, a Jewess, sent for Paul, and heard him concerning faith in Christ.

25 Mais Paul discourant sur la justice, la chasteté, et le jugement futur, Félix effrayé, répondit: Quant à présent, retire-toi; je te manderai en temps opportun;

And as he was reasoning of justice, temperance, and a future judgement, Felix trembled, and said, Go thy way for this time, and I will take a proper opportunity to call for thee again.

26 Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l’argent; c’est pourquoi, le faisant souvent venir, il s’entretenait avec lui.

And hoping also that money would be given him by Paul, that he might discharge him; he sent for him the more frequently, and conversed with him.

27 Deux années s’étant écoulées, Félix eut pour successeur Portius Festus. Or Félix, voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, laissa Paul en prison.

But after two years Felix received a successor, Porcius Festus; and being willing to gain favor with the Jews lest Paul confined.
