Actes 23
1 Paul, regardant fixement le conseil, dit: Hommes, mes frères, jusqu’à ce jour je me suis conduit devant Dieu en toute bonne conscience.
And Paul, fixing his eyes on the council, said, Brethren, I have walked in all good conscience with God unto this day.
2 Mais le prince des prêtres, Ananie, ordonna à ceux qui étaient près de lui de le frapper au visage.
But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to smite his mouth.
3 Alors Paul lui dit: Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie. Tu sièges pour me juger selon la loi, et, contre la loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper.
Then Paul said to him, God will smite thee, whited wall. And thou, dost thou sit judging me according to the law, and breaking the law commandest me to be smitten?
4 Ceux qui étaient présents dirent: Tu maudis le grand prêtre de Dieu?
And those that stood by said, Dost thou rail against the high priest of God?
5 Et Paul répondit: J’ignorais, mes frères, que ce fût le prince des prêtres, car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras point le prince de ton peuple.
And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evilly of the ruler of thy people.
6 Or Paul sachant qu’une partie étaient sadducéens, et l’autre pharisiens, s’écria dans le conseil: Hommes, mes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisien; c’est à cause de l’espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis en jugement.
But Paul, knowing that the one part [of them] were of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, son of Pharisees: I am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of [the] dead.
7 Lorsqu’il eut dit cela, il s’éleva une discussion entre les pharisiens et les saducéens, et l’assemblée fut divisée.
And when he had spoken this, there was a tumult of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided.
8 Car les sadducéens disent qu’il n’y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit; les pharisiens, au contraire, confessent l’un et l’autre.
For Sadducees say there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but Pharisees confess both of them.
9 Il s’éleva donc une grande clameur. Quelques-uns des pharisiens se levant, contestaient, disant: Nous ne trouvons rien de mal dans cet homme; et si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé?
And there was a great clamour, and the scribes of the Pharisees' part rising up contended, saying, We find nothing evil in this man; and if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel...
10 Et comme le tumulte s’accroissait, le tribun craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par ces gens-là, commanda aux soldats de descendre, de l’enlever d’au milieu d’eux, et de le conduire dans le camp.
And a great tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearing lest Paul should have been torn in pieces by them, commanded the troop to come down and take him by force from the midst of them, and to bring [him] into the fortress.
11 Mais, la nuit suivante, le Seigneur se présentant à lui, dit: Aie bon courage; car, comme tu m’as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu me rendes témoignage à Rome.
But the following night the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good courage; for as thou hast testified the things concerning me at Jerusalem, so thou must bear witness at Rome also.
12 Le jour étant venu, quelques-uns d’entre les Juifs s’assemblèrent, et se firent eux-mêmes anathème, disant qu’ils ne boiraient ni ne mangeraient qu’ils n’eussent tu« Paul.
And when it was day, the Jews, having banded together, put themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they should kill Paul.
13 Ils étaient plus de quarante hommes qui avaient fait cette conjuration;
And they were more than forty who had joined together in this oath;
14 Ils se rendirent auprès des princes des prêtres et des anciens, et dirent: Nous avons fait le vœu, en appelant sur nous l’anathème, de ne goûter de rien, que nous n’ayons tué Paul.
and they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul.
15 Maintenant donc, vous avec le conseil, faites avertir le tribun de l’amener devant vous, comme pour savoir quelque chose de plus certain sur lui. Nous, de notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu’il arrive.
Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him.
16 Mais ayant ouï parler de cette trahison, le fils de la sœur de Paul vint, entra dans le camp, et avertit Paul.
But Paul's sister's son, having heard of the lying in wait, came and entered into the fortress and reported [it] to Paul.
17 Alors Paul appelant à lui un des centurions, dit: Conduisez ce jeune homme au tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui dire.
And Paul, having called one of the centurions, said, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has something to report to him.
18 Et le centurion le prenant avec lui, le conduisit au tribun, et dit: Le prisonnier Paul m’a prié de vous amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à vous dire.
He therefore, having taken him with [him], led him to the chiliarch, and says, The prisoner Paul called me to [him] and asked me to lead this youth to thee, who has something to say to thee.
19 Aussitôt le tribun, le prenant par la main, se retira à part avec lui, et lui demanda: Qu’as-tu à me dire?
And the chiliarch having taken him by the hand, and having gone apart in private, inquired, What is it that thou hast to report to me?
20 Et le jeune homme répondit: Les Juifs sont convenus de vous prier d’amener demain Paul devant le conseil, comme pour savoir quelque chose de plus certain sur lui;
And he said, The Jews have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bring Paul down to-morrow into the council, as about to inquire something more precise concerning him.
21 Mais vous, ne les croyez pas; car des embûches lui sont dressées par plus de quarante hommes d’entre eux, qui ont fait vœu de ne manger ni de boire, qu’ils ne l’aient tué; et maintenant ils sont prêts, attendant votre ordre.
Do not thou then be persuaded by them, for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eat nor drink till they kill him; and now they are ready waiting the promise from thee.
22 Le tribun donc renvoya le jeune homme, lui défendant de dire à personne qu’il lui eût donné cet avis.
The chiliarch then dismissed the youth, commanding [him], Utter to no one that thou hast represented these things to me.
23 Puis, deux centurions appelés, il leur dit: Tenez prêts, à la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents lances, pour aller jusqu’à Césarée,
And having called to [him] certain two of the centurions, he said, Prepare two hundred soldiers that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred light-armed footmen, for the third hour of the night.
24 Et préparez des chevaux pour monter Paul, et le conduire sûrement au gouverneur Félix.
And [he ordered them] to provide beasts, that they might set Paul on them and carry [him] safe through to Felix the governor,
25 (Car il craignit que les Juifs ne l’enlevassent et ne le tuassent, et qu’ensuite on ne l’accusât d’avoir reçu de l’argent.)
having written a letter, couched in this form:
26 Il écrivit en même temps une lettre conçue en ces termes: Claude Lysias à l’excellent gouverneur Félix, salut.
Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix, greeting.
27 Les Juifs avaient pris cet homme, et ils allaient le tuer, lorsque, arrivant avec les soldats, je l’ai tirai de leurs mains, ayant appris qu’il était Romain;
This man, having been taken by the Jews, and being about to be killed by them, I came up with the military and took out [of their hands], having learned that he was a Roman.
28 Et voulant savoir de quoi ils l’accusaient, je l’ai conduit dans leur conseil.
And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council;
29 J’ai trouvé qu’il était accusé au sujet de questions qui concernent leur loi; mais qu’il n’avait commis aucun crime digne de mort ou de prison.
whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have no charge laid against him [making him] worthy of death or of bonds.
30 Et comme j’ai été averti des embûches qu’ils lui avaient dressées, je vous l’ai envoyé, déclarant aux accusateurs eux-mêmes, qu’ils aient à s’expliquer devant vous. Adieu.
But having received information of a plot about to be put in execution against the man [by the Jews], I have immediately sent him to thee, commanding also his accusers to say before thee the things that are against him. [Farewell.]
31 Ainsi, selon l’ordre qu’ils avaient, les soldats prirent Paul avec eux, et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatride.
The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris,
32 Et le jour suivant, ayant laissé les cavaliers aller avec lui, ils revinrent au camp.
and on the morrow, having left the horsemen to go with him, returned to the fortress.
33 Lorsque les cavaliers furent arrivés à Césarée, et qu’ils eurent remis la lettre au gouverneur, ils lui présentèrent aussi Paul.
And these, having entered into Caesarea, and given up the letter to the governor, presented Paul also to him.
34 Or, quand il eut reçu la lettre, et demandé à Paul de quelle province il était; apprenant qu’il était de Cilicie:
And having read [it], and asked of what eparchy he was, and learned that [he was] of Cilicia,
35 Je t’entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront venus. Et il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d’Hérode.
he said, I will hear thee fully when thine accusers also are arrived. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's praetorium.
