Actes 20
1 Après que le tumulte eut cessé, Paul ayant appelé les disciples, et leur ayant fait une exhortation, leur dit adieu, et partit pour aller en Macédoine.
When the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and, with encouraging words, said goodbye to them, and started on his journey to Macedonia.
2 Lorsqu’il eut parcouru ces contrées et fait beaucoup d’exhortations, il vint en Grèce;
After going through those districts and speaking many encouraging words to the disciples, he went into Greece, where he stayed three months.
3 Où, après avoir séjourné trois mois, il résolut de s’en retourner par la Macédoine, les Juifs lui ayant dressé une embuscade sur le chemin qu’il devait prendre pour se rendre par mer en Syrie.
He was about to sail to Syria, when he learned that a plot had been laid against him by several of the Jewish leaders; so he decided to return by way of Macedonia.
4 Sopater, fils de Pyrrhus, de Bérée, l’accompagna, de même qu’Aristarque et Second, Thessaloniciens; Gaïus, de Derbe, et Timothée; Tychique et Trophime, tous deux d’Asie.
He was accompanied by Sopater the son of Pyrrhus, of Beroea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, as well as by Tychicus and Trophimus of Roman Asia.
5 Ceux-ci étant allés devant, nous attendirent à Troas;
These people went to Troas and waited for us there;
6 Pour nous, après les jours des azymes, nous nous embarquâmes à Philippes, et en cinq jours nous les rejoignîmes à Troas, où nous demeurâmes sept jours.
while we ourselves sailed from Philippi after the Passover, and joined them five days later at Troas, where we stayed for a week.
7 Le premier jour de la semaine, les disciples étant assemblés pour rompre le pain. Paul, qui devait partir le lendemain, les entretenait, et il prolongea son discours jusqu’au milieu de la nuit.
On the first day of the week, when we had met for the breaking of bread, Paul, who was intending to leave the next day, began to address those who were present, and prolonged his address until midnight.
8 Or il y avait beaucoup de lampes dans le cénacle où nous étions rassemblés.
There were a good many lamps in the upstairs room, where we had met;
9 Et un jeune homme, du nom d’Eutyque, qui était assis sur la fenêtre, était enseveli dans un profond sommeil, car Paul par lait depuis longtemps, et en traîné par le sommeil, tomba du troisième étage en bas, et fut relevé mort.
and a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, was gradually overcome with great drowsiness, as Paul continued his address. At last, quite overpowered by his drowsiness, he fell from the third story to the ground, and was picked up for dead.
10 Paul étant descendu où il était, s’étendit sur lui, et, l’ayant embrassé, dit: Ne vous troublez point, car son âme est en lui.
But Paul went down, threw himself on him, and put his arms around him. “Do not be alarmed,” he said, “he is still alive.”
11 Puis étant remonté et ayant rompu le pain et mangé, il leur parla encore beaucoup jusqu’au jour, et il partit ainsi.
Then he went upstairs; and, after breaking and partaking of the bread, he talked with them at great length until daybreak, and then left.
12 Or on ramena le jeune homme vivant, et ils en furent grandement consolés.
Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive, and were greatly comforted.
13 Pour nous, montant sur le vaisseau, nous naviguâmes vers Asson, où nous devions reprendre Paul; car il l’avait ainsi disposé, devant lui-même aller par terre.
We started first, went on board ship, and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there. This was by his own arrangement, as he intended to go by land himself.
14 Lors donc qu’il nous eut rejoints à Asson, nous le reprîmes, et nous vînmes à Mitylène.
So, when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and went on to Mitylene.
15 Et de là, naviguant, nous arrivâmes le jour suivant devant Chio; le lendemain nous abordâmes à Samos, et le jour d’après nous vînmes à Milet;
The day after we had sailed from there, we arrived off Chios, touched at Samos the following day, and the next day reached Miletus;
16 Car Paul s’était proposé de passer Ephèse sans y prendre terre, de peur d’éprouver quelque retard en Asie. Car il se hâtait, afin d’être, s’il lui eût été possible, le jour de la Pentecôte à Jérusalem.
for Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so as to avoid spending much time in Roman Asia. He was making haste to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the Festival at the close of the Harvest.
17 Or, de Milet envoyant à Ephèse, il appela les anciens de l’Eglise.
From Miletus, however, he sent to Ephesus and invited the church elders to meet him;
18 Et lorsqu’ils furent venus près de lui, et qu’ils étaient assemblés, il leur dit: Vous savez comment, dès le premier jour où je suis entré en Asie, j’ai été en tout temps avec vous,
and, when they came, he said to them, “You know well the life that I always led among you from the very first day that I set foot in Roman Asia,
19 Servant le Seigneur en toute humilité, au milieu des larmes et des épreuves qui me sont survenues par les trames des Juifs;
serving the Lord, as I did, in all humility, amid the tears and trials which fell to my lot through the plots of some of the Jewish leaders.
20 Comment je ne vous ai soustrait aucune des choses utiles, et que rien ne m’a empêché de vous les annoncer, et de vous les enseigner publiquement et dans les maisons,
I never shrank from telling you anything that could be helpful to you, or from teaching you both in public and in private.
21 Prêchant aux Juifs et aux gentils la pénitence envers Dieu, et la foi en Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ.
I earnestly pointed both Jews and Greeks to the repentance that leads to God, and to faith in Jesus, our Lord.
22 Et maintenant voilà que, lié par l’Esprit, je m’en vais à Jérusalem, ignorant ce qui doit m’y arriver:
And now, under spiritual constraint, I am here on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
23 Si ce n’est que, dans toutes les villes, l’Esprit-Saint m’atteste que des chaînes et des tribulations m’attendent à Jérusalem.
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit plainly declares to me that imprisonment and troubles await me.
24 Mais je ne crains rien de ces choses, et je ne regarde pas ma vie comme plus précieuse que moi, pourvu que j’accomplisse ma course et le ministère que j’ai reçu du Seigneur Jésus, de rendre témoignage à l’Evangile de la grâce de Dieu.
But I count my life of no value to myself, if only I may complete the course marked out for me, and the task that was allotted me by the Lord Jesus – which was to declare the good news of the love of God.
25 Et maintenant voilà que je sais que vous ne verrez plus mon visage, vous tous au milieu desquels j’ai passé, annonçant le royaume de Dieu.
And now, I tell you, I know that none of you will ever see my face again – you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom.
26 C’est pourquoi je vous prends à témoins aujourd’hui que je suis pur du sang de vous tous.
Therefore I declare to you this day, that my conscience is clear in regard to the fate of any of you,
27 Car je ne me suis point refusé à vous annoncer tous les desseins de Dieu.
for I have not shrunk from announcing the whole purpose of God regarding you.
28 Soyez donc attentifs et à vous et à tout le troupeau sur lequel Dieu vous a établis évêques, pour gouverner l’Eglise de Dieu, qu’il a acquise par son sang.
Be watchful over yourselves, and over the whole flock, of which the Holy Spirit has placed you in charge, to shepherd the church of God, which he won for himself at the cost of his life.
29 Car moi je sais qu’après mon départ s’introduiront parmi vous des loups ravissants, qui n’épargneront point le troupeau;
I know that, after my departure, merciless wolves will get in among you, who will not spare the flock;
30 Et que, d’au milieu de vous-mêmes, s’élèveront des hommes qui enseigneront des choses perverses, afin d’attirer les disciples après eux.
and from among yourselves, too, people will arise, who will teach perversions of truth, so as to draw away the disciples after them.
31 C’est pourquoi, veillez, retenant en votre mémoire que pendant trois ans je n’ai cessé d’avertir avec larmes chacun de vous.
Therefore, be on your guard, remembering how for three years, night and day, I never ceased, even with tears, to warn each one of you.
32 Et maintenant, je vous recommande à Dieu et à la parole de sa grâce, à celui qui est puissant pour édifier, et pour donner un héritage parmi tous les sanctifiés.
And now I commend you to the Lord and to the message of his love – a message which has the power to build up your characters, and to give you your place among all those who have become Christ’s people.
33 Je n’ai convoité ni l’or, ni l’argent, ni le vêtement de personne, comme
I have never coveted anyone’s gold or silver or clothing.
34 Vous le savez vous-mêmes; parce que, à l’égard des choses dont moi et ceux qui sont avec moi avions besoin, ces mains y ont pourvu.
You, yourselves, know that these hands of mine provided not only for my own wants, but for my companions also.
35 Je vous ai montré en tout que c’est en travaillant ainsi qu’il faut soutenir les faibles, et se souvenir de la parole du Seigneur Jésus; car c’est lui-même qui a dit: Il est plus heureux de donner que de recevoir.
I left nothing undone to show you that, laboring as I labored, you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said himself – ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
36 Lorsqu’il eut dit ces choses, il se mit à genoux, et pria avec eux tous.
When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down and prayed with them all.
37 Et il y eut un grand pleur parmi eux tous, et se jetant au cou de Paul, ils le baisaient,
All were in tears; and throwing their arms around Paul’s neck, they kissed him again and again,
38 Affligés surtout de la parole qu’il avait dite, qu’ils ne devaient plus revoir son visage. Et ils le conduisirent jusqu’au vaisseau.
grieving most of all over what he had said – that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.
