Actes 19
1 Or il arriva pendant qu’Apollo était à Corinthe, que Paul, ayant parcouru les provinces supérieures, vint à Ephèse et y trouva quelques disciples,
And it came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
2 Et il leur demanda: Avez-vous reçu l’Esprit-Saint depuis que vous croyez? Ils lui répondirent: S’il y a un Esprit-Saint, nous ne l’avons pas même ouï dire.
And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost.
3 Et lui leur repartit: De quel baptême avez-vous donc été baptisés? Ils répondirent; Du baptême de Jean.
And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John’s baptism.
4 Alors Paul répliqua: Jean a baptisé le peuple du baptême de pénitence, leur disant de croire en celui qui devait venir après lui, c’est-à-dire en Jésus-Christ.
Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.
5 Ces paroles entendues, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Et après que Paul leur eut imposé les mains, l’Esprit-Saint descendit sur eux, et ils parlaient diverses langues, et prophétisaient.
And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7 Ils étaient en tout environ douze.
And all the men were about twelve.
8 Alors étant entrés dans la synagogue, il y parla avec assurance pendant trois mois, disputant et les persuadant du royaume de Dieu.
And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God.
9 Et, comme quelques-uns s’endurcissaient et ne croyaient point, maudissant la voie du Seigneur devant la multitude, il s’éloigna d’eux, et en sépara ses disciples; il disputait tous les jours dans l’école d’un certain Tyran.
But when some were hardened, and believed not, speaking evil of the way of the Lord, before the multitude, departing from them, he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10 Or c’est ce qui se fit pendant deux ans; de sorte que tous ceux qui demeuraient en Asie, Juifs et gentils, entendirent la parole du Seigneur.
And this continued for the space of two years, so that all they who dwelt in Asia, heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles.
11 Et Dieu faisait, par la main de Paul, des miracles extraordinaires;
And God wrought by the hand of Paul more than common miracles.
12 Au point même que l’on mettait sur les malades des mouchoirs et des tabliers qui avaient touché son corps, et ils étaient guéris de leurs maladies, et les esprits mauvais sortaient.
So that even there were brought from his body to the sick, handkerchiefs and aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the wicked spirits went out of them.
13 Or quelques Juifs exorcistes, qui allaient de côté et d’autre, tentèrent d’invoquer le nom de Jésus sur ceux qui avaient en eux des esprits mauvais, disant: Je vous adjure par le Jésus que Paul prêche.
Now some also of the Jewish exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth.
14 C’étaient sept fils de Scéva, Juif et prince des prêtres, qui faisaient cela.
And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this.
15 Mais l’esprit mauvais, répondant, leur dit: Je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous?
But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?
16 Et l’homme en qui était le plus mauvais démon s’élança sur eux, et, s’étant rendu maître de deux d’entre eux, il les maltraita de telle sorte, qu’ils s’enfuirent de cette maison, nus et blessés.
And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 Cela fut connu de tous les Juifs et gentils qui habitaient Ephèse; et la crainte s’empara d’eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus était glorifié.
And this became known to all the Jews and the Gentiles that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 Beaucoup d’entre les croyants venaient, confessant, et déclarant ce qu’ils avaient fait.
And many of them that believed, came confessing and declaring their deeds.
19 Et beaucoup aussi de ceux qui avaient exercé les arts curieux, apportèrent leurs livres, et les brûlèrent en présence de tous; et le prix en ayant été supputé, on trouva la somme de cinquante mille deniers.
And many of them who had followed curious arts, brought together their books, and burnt them before all; and counting the price of them, they found the money to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 Ainsi croissait et s’affermissait puissamment la parole de Dieu.
So mightily grew the word of God, and was confirmed.
21 Ces choses accomplies, Paul résolut, par un mouvement de l’Esprit-Saint, la Macédoine et l’Achaïe traversées, d’aller à Jérusalem, disant: Après que j’aurai été là, il faut que je voie Rome aussi.
And when these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying: After I have been there, I must see Rome also.
22 Et envoyant en Macédoine deux de ceux qui l’assistaient, Timothée et Eraste, il demeura lui-même quelque temps en Asie.
And sending into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself remained for a time in Asia.
23 Mais il survint en ce temps-là, un grand trouble au sujet de la voie du Seigneur.
Now at that time there arose no small disturbance about the way of the Lord.
24 Car un certain orfèvre, du nom de Démétrius, qui, faisant en argent de petits temples de Diane, procurait un gain considérable aux ouvriers,
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver temples for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen;
25 Les ayant assemblés, avec d’autres qui faisaient de ces sortes d’ouvrages, il dit: Hommes, vous savez que c’est de cette industrie que vient notre gain;
Whom he calling together, with the workmen of like occupation, said: Sirs, you know that our gain is by this trade;
26 Et vous voyez et entendez dire que ce Paul ayant persuadé non seulement Ephèse, mais presque toute l’Asie, il a détourné une grande multitude, disant: Ils ne sont pas dieux ceux qui sont faits par des mains.
And you see and hear, that this Paul by persuasion hath drawn away a great multitude, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying: They are not gods which are made by hands.
27 Or, non seulement nous courons risque que notre métier soit décrié, mais que le temple même de la grande Diane tombe dans le mépris, et que s’anéantisse insensiblement la majesté de celle que toute l’Asie et le monde entier révère.
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also the temple of great Diana shall be reputed for nothing; yea, and her majesty shall begin to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28 Ce discours entendu, ils furent remplis de colère, et ils s’écrièrent, disant: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!
Having heard these things, they were full of anger, and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29 La ville fut aussitôt remplie de confusion, et ils firent irruption dans le théâtre, y entraînant Gaïus et Aristarque, macédoniens, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
And the whole city was filled with confusion; and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30 Or Paul, voulant pénétrer au milieu du peuple, les disciples ne le permirent pas.
And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
31 Quelques-uns aussi des Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui, le priant de ne pas se présenter au théâtre;
And some also of the rulers of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, desiring that he would not venture himself into the theatre.
32 Cependant les uns criaient une chose, les autres une autre. Car c’était une réunion confuse, et la plupart ne savaient pourquoi ils étaient assemblés.
Now some cried one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused, and the greater part knew not for what cause they were come together.
33 Cependant on dégagea Alexandre de la foule, à l’aide des Juifs qui le poussaient devant eux. Or Alexandre demanda de la main qu’on fît silence, voulant se défendre devant le peuple.
And they drew forth Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander beckoning with his hand for silence, would have given the people satisfaction.
34 Mais, dès qu’il eut été reconnu pour Juif, tous, d’une seule voix, crièrent pendant environ deux heures: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!
But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35 Alors le scribe ayant apaisé la foule, dit: Ephésiens, quel est l’homme qui ignore que la ville d’Ephèse rend un culte à la grande Diane, fille de Jupiter?
And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana, and of Jupiter’s offspring.
36 Puisque donc on ne peut le contester, il faut que vous soyez calmes, et que vous ne fassiez rien témérairement.
For as much therefore as these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
37 Car vous avez amené ces hommes, qui ne sont ni sacrilèges, ni blasphémateurs de votre déesse.
For you have brought hither these men, who are neither guilty of sacrilege, nor of blasphemy against your goddess.
38 Que si Démétrius et les ouvriers qui sont avec lui ont à se plaindre de quelqu’un, il y a des audiences publiques, il existe des proconsuls; qu’ils s’accusent les uns les autres.
But if Demetrius and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts of justice are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
39 Mais si vous avez quelque autre affaire à proposer, elle pourra se terminer dans une assemblée régulière.
And if you inquire after any other matter, it may be decided in a lawful assembly.
40 Car nous courons risque d’être accusés de sédition sur ce qui s’est passé aujourd’hui, n’y ayant personne qui donne un motif (que nous puissions justifier) de cet attroupement. Et lorsqu’il eut dit cela, il congédia l’assemblée.
For we are even in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no man guilty (of whom we may give account) of this concourse.
And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
