2 Samuel 20

1 Il arriva aussi que là était un homme de Bélial, du nom de Séba, fils de Bochri, homme de Jémini, et il sonna de la trompette, et dit: Nous n’avons point de part avec David, ni d’héritage avec le fils d’Isaï; retourne en tes tabernacles, ô Israël.

And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Seba, the son of Bochri, a man of Jemini: and he sounded the trumpet, and said: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai: return to thy dwellings, O Israel.

2 Et tout Israël se sépara de David, et suivit Séba, fils de Bochri; mais les hommes de Juda restèrent près de leur roi, depuis le Jourdain jusqu’à Jérusalem.

And all Israel departed from David, and followed Seba the son of Bochri: but the men of Juda stuck to their king from the Jordan unto Jerusalem.

3 Et lorsque le roi fut venu en sa maison à Jérusalem, il prit les dix femmes qu’il avait laissées pour garder la maison, les donna en garde, leur fournissant les aliments; et il ne s’approcha plus d’elles: mais elles étaient enfermées jusqu’au jour de leur mort, vivant en veuves.

And when the king was come into his house at Jerusalem, he took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, allowing them provisions: and he went not in unto them, but they were shut up unto the day of their death living in widowhood.

4 Or, le roi dit à Amasa: Appelle près de moi tous les hommes de Juda pour le troisième jour, et toi, sois présent.

And the king said to Amasa: Assemble to me all the men of Juda against the third day, and be thou here present.

5 Amasa donc s’en alla pour appeler Juda, et il tarda au-delà de l’ordre que lui avait donné le roi.

So Amasa went to assemble the men of Juda, but he tarried beyond the set time which the king had appointed him.

6 Or David dit à Abisaï: Maintenant Séba, fils de Bochri, nous affligera plus qu’Absalom: prends donc les serviteurs de ton seigneur, et poursuis-le, de peur qu’il ne trouve des villes fortifiées, et qu’il ne nous échappe.

And David said to Abisai: Now will Seba the son of Bochri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou therefore the servants of thy lord, and pursue after him, lest he find fenced cities, and escape us.

7 Les hommes de Joab sortirent donc avec lui, les Céréthiens aussi et les Phélétiens; et tous les hommes vigoureux sortirent de Jérusalem pour poursuivre Séba, fils de Bochri.

So Joab’s men went out with him, and the Cerethi and the Phelethi: and all the valiant men went out of Jerusalem to pursue after Seba the son of Bochri.

8 Et lorsqu’ils furent près de la grande pierre qui est à Gabaon, Amasa, venant, les rencontra. Or, Joab était vêtu d’une tunique étroite, selon la mesure de son habit, et par-dessus ceint d’un glaive pendant à ses côtés dans son fourreau, et fait de manière qu’il pouvait par un léger mouvement sortir et frapper.

And when they were at the great stone which is in Gabaon, Amasa coming met them. And Joab had on a close coat of equal length with his habit, and over it was girded with a sword hanging down to his flank, in a scabbard, made in such manner as to come out with the least motion and strike.

9 C’est pourquoi Joab dit à Amasa: Salut, mon frère. Et de sa main droite, il prit le menton d’Amasa, comme pour le baiser.

And Joab said to Amasa: God save thee, my brother. And he took Amasa by the chin with his right hand to kiss him.

10 Or Amasa ne prit point garde au glaive qu’avait Joab, qui le frappa dans le côté, et répandit ses entrailles sur la terre; et il ne le frappa point d’un second coup, et Amasa mourut. Ensuite Joab et Abisaï son frère poursuivirent Séba, fils de Bochri.

But Amasa did not take notice of the sword, which Joab had, and he struck him in the side, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and gave him not a second wound, and he died. And Joab, and Abisai his brother pursued after Seba the son of Bochri.

11 Cependant quelques hommes des compagnons de Joab, s’étant arrêtés près du cadavre d’Amasa, dirent: Voilà celui qui a voulu être de la suite de David à la place de Joab.

In the mean time some men of Joab’s company stopping at the dead body of Amasa, said: Behold he that would have been in Joab’s stead the companion of David.

12 Et Amasa, couvert de sang, gisait au milieu de la voie. Mais un certain homme vit que tout le peuple s’arrêtait pour le voir; il poussa Amasa de la voie dans le champ, et le couvrit d’un vêtement, afin que les passants ne s’arrêtassent pas à cause de lui.

And Amasa imbrued with blood, lay in the midst of the way. A certain man saw this that all the people stood still to look upon him, so he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and covered him with a garment, that they who passed might not stop on his account.

13 Amasa donc ôté de la voie, tout homme passait, suivant Joab, pour poursuivre Séba, fils de Bochri.

And when he was removed out of the way, all the people went on following Joab to pursue after Seba the son of Bochri.

14 Mais celui-ci avait passé à travers toutes les tribus d’Israël, à Abéla et à Bethmaacha; et tous les hommes choisis s’étaient assemblés auprès de lui.

Now he had passed through all the tribes of Israel unto Abela and Bethmaacha: and all the chosen men were gathered together unto him.

15 C’est pourquoi Joab et les siens vinrent, et l’assiégèrent à Abéla et à Bethmaacha; et ils environnèrent la ville de fortifications, et la ville fut investie: or, toute la multitude qui était avec Joab s’efforçait de détruire les murs.

And they came, and besieged him in Abela, and in Bethmaacha, and they cast up works round the city, and the city was besieged: and all the people that were with Joab, laboured to throw down the walls.

16 Et une femme sage de la ville s’écria: Ecoutez, écoutez; dites à Joab: Approche-toi d’ici, et je te parlerai.

And a wise woman cried out from the city: Hear, hear, and say to Joab: Come near hither, and I will speak with thee.

17 Lorsque Joab se fut approché d’elle, elle lui dit: C’est toi qui es Joab? Et celui-ci répondit: Moi. Elle lui parla ainsi: Ecoute les paroles de ta servante. Joab répondit: J’écoute.

And when he was come near to her, she said to him: Art thou Joab? And he answered: I am. And she spoke thus to him: Hear the words of thy handmaid. He answered: I do hear.

18 Et elle de nouveau: Ce mot, dit-elle, se disait dans un ancien proverbe: Ceux qui interrogent, qu’ils interrogent à Abéla; et c’est ainsi qu’ils arrivaient au but.

And she again said: A saying was used in the old proverb: They that inquire, let them inquire in Abela: and so they made an end.

19 N’est-ce pas moi qui réponds la vérité en Israël, et toi, tu demandes à bouleverser une cité, et à détruire une mère en Israël? Pourquoi renverses-tu l’héritage du Seigneur?

Am not I she that answer truth in Israel, and thou seekest to destroy the city, and to overthrow a mother in Israel? Why wilt thou throw down the inheritance of the Lord?

20 Et répondant, Joab dit: Loin de moi, loin de moi cela! je ne renverse, ni ne démolis.

And Joab answering said: God forbid, God forbid that I should, I do not throw down, nor destroy.

21 La chose n’est pas ainsi; mais un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm, Séba, fils de Bochri par son surnom, a levé sa main contre le roi David: livrez-le seul, et nous nous retirerons de la ville. Et la femme dit à Joab: Voilà que sa tête te sera envoyée par-dessus le mur.

The matter is not so, but a man of mount Ephraim, Seba the son of Bochri by name, hath lifted up his hand against king David: deliver him only, and we will depart from the city. And the woman said to Joab: Behold his head shall be thrown to thee from the wall.

22 Elle s’avança donc vers tout le peuple, et parla sagement; et ayant coupé la tête de Séba, fils de Bochri, ils la jetèrent à Joab. Et celui-ci sonna de la trompette, et ils se retirèrent de la ville, chacun en ses tabernacles; mais Joab retourna à Jérusalem près du roi.

So she went to all the people, and spoke to them wisely: and they cut off the head of Seba the son of Bochri, and cast it out to Joab. And he sounded the trumpet, and they departed from the city, every one to their home: and Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

23 Joab donc fut chef de toute l’armée d’Israël, mais Banaïas, fils de Joïada, des Céréthiens et des Phéléthiens,

So Joab was over all the army of Israel: and Banaias the son of Joiada was over the Cerethites and Phelethites,

24 Et Aduram, des tributs; et Josaphat, fils d’Ahilud, tenait les registres.

But Aduram over the tributes: and Josaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder.

25 Siva était scribe, et Sadoc et Abiathar, prêtres.

And Siva was scribe: and Sadoc and Abiathar, priests.

26 Mais Ira, le Jaïrite, était prêtre de David.

And Ira the Jairite was the priest of David.
