2 Samuel 18
1 Ainsi David, son peuple passé en revue, établit sur eux des tribuns et des centurions.
And David marshalled the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2 Et il mit une troisième partie de ses troupes sous la main de Joab, une troisième partie sous la main d’Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, frère de Joab, et une troisième partie sous la main d’Ethaï, qui était de Geth; et le roi dit au peuple: J’irai moi aussi avec vous.
And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3 Et le peuple répondit: Vous ne sortirez point; car si nous fuyons, ils n’attacheront pas beaucoup d’importance à nous; et si la moitié de nous tombe, ils n’y prendront pas assez d’intérêt, parce que vous seul, vous êtes compté pour dix mille. Il vaut donc mieux que vous nous soyez un appui dans la ville.
But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth, for if we should in any case flee, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us; for thou art worth ten thousand of us; and now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
4 Le roi leur dit: Je ferai ce qui vous semble bon. Le roi donc s’arrêta près de la porte: et le peuple sortait selon ses bandes, par cent et par mille.
And the king said to them, I will do what is good in your sight. And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 Et le roi commanda à Joab, et à Abisaï, et à Ethaï, disant: Sauvez-moi mon fils Absalom. Et tout le peuple entendit le roi ordonnant à tous les chefs en faveur d’Absalom.
And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, [Deal] gently for my sake with the young man Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6 C’est pourquoi le peuple sortit dans la plaine contre Israël, et le combat se fit dans la forêt d’Ephraïm.
And the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
7 Et là le peuple d’Israël fut taillé en pièces par l’armée de David; et il y eut une grande défaite en ce jour-là, vingt mille hommes furent tués.
And the people of Israel were routed before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day: twenty thousand men.
8 Or, le combat s’étendit sur la face de toute la terre, ceux du peuple que la forêt détruisit, étaient beaucoup plus nombreux que ceux que dévora le glaive en ce jour-là.
And the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 Mais il advint qu’Absalom rencontra les serviteurs de David, étant assis sur son mulet; et tandis que le mulet entrait sous le chêne touffu et grand, la tête d’Absalom s’embarrassa dans le chêne; et, lui étant suspendu entre le ciel et la terre, le mulet sur lequel il était assis passa outre.
And Absalom found himself in the presence of David's servants. And Absalom was riding upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of the great terebinth, and his head caught in the terebinth, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.
10 Or, quelqu’un vit cela, et l’annonça à Joab, disant: J’ai vu Absalom suspendu au chêne.
And a man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth.
11 Et Joab dit à l’homme qui le lui avait annoncé: Si tu l’as vu, pourquoi ne l’as-tu point percé contre la terre? Je t’aurais donné dix sicles d’argent et un baudrier.
And Joab said to the man that told him, And behold, thou sawest [him], and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten silver pieces and a girdle.
12 Celui-ci dit à Joab: Quand vous pèseriez en mes mains mille sicles d’argent, je ne porterais nullement ma main sur le fils du roi; car, comme nous l’avons ouï, le roi vous a ordonné à vous, à Abisaï et à Ethaï, disant: Conservez mon fils Absalom.
And the man said to Joab, Though I should receive a thousand silver pieces in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Take care, whoever it be [of you], of the young man Absalom.
13 Mais si j’avais agi ainsi audacieusement contre mon âme, cela n’aurait pu être nullement caché au roi; et vous, seriez-vous contre lui?
Or I should have acted falsely against mine own life, for there is no matter concealed from the king, and thou wouldest have set thyself against [me].
14 Et Joab dit: Non pas comme tu veux, mais je l’attaquerai devant toi. Joab donc prit trois dards en sa main, et les enfonça dans le cœur d’Absalom; et comme il respirait encore, suspendu au chêne,
Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three spears in his hand, and thrust them into Absalom's body, while he was yet alive in the midst of the terebinth.
15 Accoururent dix jeunes écuyers de Joab, et, le frappant, ils le tuèrent,
And ten young men that bore Joab's armour surrounded and smote Absalom, and killed him.
16 Or Joab sonna de la trompette, et retint le peuple, afin qu’il ne poursuivît point Israël, qui fuyait, voulant épargner la multitude.
And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab kept back the people.
17 Et ils emportèrent Absalom et le jetèrent dans la forêt, dans la grande fosse, et ils portèrent sur lui un très grand monceau de pierres; mais tout Israël s’enfuit en ses tabernacles.
And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and raised a very great heap of stones upon him. And all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18 Or, Absalom avait érigé pour lui, lorsqu’il vivait encore, un monument qui est dans la Vallée du roi; car il avait dit: Je n’ai point de fils, et ce sera là un souvenir de mon nom. Et il appela le monument de son nom; et on l’a appelé la Main d’Absalom jusqu’à ce jour.
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a monument, which is in the king's dale; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance; and he called the monument after his own name; and it is called unto this day, Absalom's memorial.
19 Alors Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, dit: Je courrai, et j’annoncerai au roi que le Seigneur lui a fait justice, en le délivrant de la main de ses ennemis.
And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, Let me run, I pray, and carry the king the news that Jehovah has avenged him of his enemies.
20 Joab lui dit: Tu ne seras point messager en ce jour; mais tu annonceras dans un autre: je ne veux pas que tu portes aujourd’hui la nouvelle; car le fils du roi est mort.
And Joab said to him, Thou shalt not be a bearer of news to-day, but thou shalt carry the news another day; but to-day thou shalt carry no news, because the king's son is dead.
21 Joab dit donc à Chusi: Va, et annonce au roi ce que tu as vu. Chusi se prosterna devant Joab, et courut.
Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go, tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.
22 Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, dit encore à Joab: Qui empêche que je ne coure, moi aussi, après Chusi? Et Joab lui dit: Pourquoi veux-tu courir, mon fils? tu ne seras pas porteur d’une bonne nouvelle.
And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, Come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Why wilt thou run, my son, seeing that there is no news suited [to thee]?
23 Achimaas répondit: Mais enfin si je courais? Et il lui dit: Cours. Achimaas donc, courant par une voie plus courte, devança Chusi.
— But, come what may, let me run. And he said to him, Run. And Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and outstripped the Cushite.
24 Cependant David était assis entre les deux portes; et la sentinelle qui était au faite de la porte sur le mur, levant les yeux, vit un homme courant seul.
And David sat between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate, on to the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man running alone.
25 Et, criant à haute voix, elle avertit le roi; et le roi dit: S’il est seul, une bonne nouvelle est en sa bouche. Or, celui-ci se hâtant, et approchant de plus près,
And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is news in his mouth. And he came on and drew near.
26 La sentinelle vit un autre homme courant, et criant haut du faîte, elle dit: Je vois un autre homme courant seul. Et le roi dit: Celui-ci aussi est un bon messager.
And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the porter and said, Behold a man running alone. And the king said, He also is a bearer of news.
27 Mais la sentinelle: Je vois, dit-elle, la course du premier comme la course d’Achimaas, fils de Sadoc. Et le roi dit: C’est un homme de bien, et c’est en portant une bonne nouvelle qu’il vient.
And the watchman said, I see the running of the foremost like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man; and comes with good news.
28 Et criant, Achimaas dit au roi: Salut, ô roi! Et, se prosternant devant le roi, incliné vers la terre, il dit: Béni le Seigneur votre Dieu, qui a enfermé les hommes qui ont levé leurs mains contre mon seigneur le roi.
And Ahimaaz called and said to the king, Peace! And he fell down to the earth on his face before the king, and said, Blessed be Jehovah thy God, who has delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29 Et le roi demanda: La paix est-elle avec mon fils Absalom? Et Achimaas répondit: Ô roi, j’ai vu un grand tumulte, lorsque Joab, votre serviteur, m’envoyait, moi, votre serviteur: je ne sais pas autre chose.
And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz said, I saw a great tumult when Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant; but I knew not what it was.
30 Et le roi: Passe, dit-il, et attends ici. Et lorsque celui-ci eut passé, et qu’il s’arrêtait,
And the king said, Turn aside [and] stand here. And he turned aside and stood still.
31 Parut Chusi, et venant, il dit: J’apporte une bonne nouvelle, mon seigneur le roi; car le Seigneur aujourd’hui a jugé en votre faveur, on vous délivrant de la main de tous ceux qui se sont élevés contre vous.
And behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Let my lord the king receive good tidings, for Jehovah has avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32 Et le roi dit à Chusi: La paix est-elle avec mon fils Absalom? Chusi lui répondant: Qu’ils deviennent, dit-il, comme le jeune prince, les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi, et tous ceux qui s’élèvent contre lui pour le mal.
And the king said to the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite said, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee for evil, be as that young man.
33 C’est pourquoi le roi contristé monta dans la chambre au-dessus de la porte, et pleura. Et il disait en montant: Mon fils Absalom! Absalom mon fils! qui est-ce qui me donnera que je meure moi-même pour toi? Absalom mon fils! mon fils Absalom!
And the king was much moved, and went up to the upper chamber of the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said thus: O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died in thy stead, O Absalom, my son, my son!
