2 Samuel 17
1 Achitophel donc dit à Absalom: Je me choisirai douze mille hommes, et me levant, je poursuivrai David en cette nuit.
Moreover Achithophel said unto Abshalom, Do let me now select twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night;
2 Et, fondant sur lui (car il est las et de mains défaillantes), je le frapperai; et lorsqu’aura fui tout le peuple qui est avec lui, je frapperai le roi désolé.
And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will terrify him; so that all the people that are with him will flee; and I will smite the king alone;
3 Et je ramènerai tout le peuple, comme un seul homme a coutume de revenir; car c’est un seul homme que vous cherchez vous-même; et tout le peuple sera en paix.
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: when all return [except] the man whom thou seekest, all the people will be in peace.
4 Et sa parole plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d’Israël.
And the thing was pleasing in the eyes of Abshalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israel.
5 Mais Absalom dit: Appelez Chusaï, l’Arachite, et écoutons ce que lui aussi dira.
Then said Abshalom, Do call now also Chushai the Arkite, and let us hear what he likewise beareth in his mouth.
6 Et lorsque Chusaï fut venu vers Absalom, Absalom lui dit: Achitophel a dit cette parole; devons-nous l’exécuter ou non? quel conseil donnes-tu?
And when Chushai was come to Abshalom, Abshalom said unto him, as followeth, Such words as these hath Achithophel spoken: shall we do after his words? if not, do thou speak.
7 Et Chusaï répondit à Absalom: Ce n’est pas un bon conseil qu’a donné Achitophel cette fois.
And Chushai said unto Abshalom, The counsel that Achithophel hath given at this time is not good.
8 Et Chusaï ajouta encore: Vous savez que votre père et les hommes qui sont avec lui sont très vaillants, et d’un cœur outré, comme si une ourse était furieuse, ses petits lui ayant été ravis dans la forêt; et votre père aussi, homme de guerre, ne restera point avec le peuple.
And Chushai said, Thou well knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and are of an embittered spirit, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is also a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.
9 Peut-être est-il maintenant caché dans les cavernes, ou en un autre lieu qu’il aura voulu; et si quelqu’un, quel qu’il soit, tombe au commencement, on l’apprendra, et quiconque l’apprendra, dira: Il a été fait une grande plaie sur le peuple qui suivait Absalom.
Behold, he is now hidden in some one of the pits, or in some one of the [other] places: and it will come to pass, when some of them should fall at the first onset, that whosoever heareth it would say, There hath been slaughter among the people that follow Abshalom.
10 Et tous les plus vaillants, dont le cœur est comme celui du lion, seront saisis d’effroi; car tout le peuple d’Israël sait que votre père est vaillant, et que tous ceux qui sont avec lui sont vigoureux.
And he also that is most valiant, whose heart is as the heart of the lion, would become quite discouraged; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they who are with him are valiant persons.
11 Mais ceci me semble être un bon conseil: que tout Israël s’assemble près de vous, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, comme le sable innombrable de la mer, et vous, vous serez au milieu d’eux.
But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba', like the sand that is by the sea in multitude: while thou in thy own person goest into the fight.
12 Et nous fondrons sur David, en quelque lieu que nous le trouvions, et nous le couvrirons comme la rosée a coutume de tomber sur la terre; quant aux hommes qui sont avec lui, nous n’en laisserons pas même un seul.
And when we come upon him in some one of the places where he may be found, we will encamp around him as the dew falleth on the earth: and there shall not be left of him and of all the men that are with him so much as one.
13 Que s’il entre en quelque ville, tout Israël environnera cette ville de cordes; et nous l’entraînerons dans le torrent, afin qu’on n’en trouve pas même une petite pierre.
And if he should withdraw into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it into the stream, until there be not found there even one small stone.
14 Alors Absalom dit et tous les hommes d’Israël: Le conseil de Chusaï, l’Arachite, est meilleur que le conseil d’Achitophel. Ainsi par la volonté du Seigneur fut dissipé le conseil utile d’Achitophel, afin que le Seigneur amenât le malheur sur Absalom.
And Abshalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Chushai the Arkite is better than the counsel of Achithophel. But the Lord had ordained to frustrate the good counsel of Achithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring the evil upon Abshalom.
15 Et Chusaï dit à Sadoc et à Abiathar, prêtres: C’est de cette manière qu’Achitophel a donné conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël, et moi j’ai donné tel et tel conseil.
Then said Chushai unto Zadok and to Ebyathar the priests, Thus and thus did Achithophel counsel Abshalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled.
16 Maintenant donc, envoyez vite, et annoncez à David, disant: Ne demeurez point cette nuit dans les plaines du désert; mais passez au-delà sans délai, de peur que le roi ne soit englouti, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui.
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but rather pass over at once; lest the king be entirely ruined, and all the people that are with him.
17 Or Jonathas et Achimaas étaient près de la fontaine de Rogel: la servante vint, et les avertit; et ils partirent pour rapporter au roi David le message; car ils ne pouvaient être vus, ou entrer dans la ville.
Now Jonathan and Achima'az were staying by 'En-rogel; and a maid-servant had to go and tell them, that they should go and tell king David; for they dared not be seen to come into the city.
18 Mais un certain enfant les vit, et en donna avis à Absalom: or, eux, d’un pas précipité, entrèrent dans la maison d’un certain homme de Bahurim, lequel avait un puits dans sa cour, et ils y descendirent.
Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told it to Abshalom; but they went, both of them, quickly away, and came to the house of a man in Bachurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.
19 Cependant la femme prit sa couverture, et retendit sur le puits, comme pour faire sécher de l’orge mondé; et ainsi fut cachée la chose.
And the wife took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and scattered ground corn thereupon; so that nothing was perceived.
20 Et lorsque les serviteurs d’Absalom furent venus dans la maison, ils dirent à cette femme: Où sont Achimaas et Jonathas? Et la femme leur répondit: Ils ont passé à la hâte, après avoir goûté un peu d’eau. Mais ceux qui les cherchaient, ne les trouvant point, retournèrent à Jérusalem.
And Abshalom's servants came to the woman into the house, and they said, Where are Achima'az and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are passed over the brook of water. And they sought, but could not find them; and they returned to Jerusalem.
21 Et lorsqu’ils s’en furent allés, Achimaas et Jonathas montèrent hors du puits, et, cheminant, ils l’annoncèrent au roi David, et dirent: Levez-vous, et passez le fleuve; car Achitophel a donné tel conseil contre vous.
And it came to pass, after they were gone, that they came up out of the well, and went and told it to king David, and they said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Achithophel counseled against you.
22 David donc se leva, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ils passèrent le Jourdain jusqu’à ce que le jour parût, et il n’en demeura pas même un seul qui ne passât le fleuve.
Then did David arise, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the time the morning was light, not even one was lacking who had not passed over the Jordan.
23 Mais Achitophel, voyant que son conseil n’avait pas été suivi, sella son âne et se leva, et s’en alla en sa maison et en sa ville; et, sa maison réglée, il se pendit, et il fut enseveli dans le sépulcre de son père.
And when Achithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled the ass, and arose, and went home to his house, to his city, and gave his charge to his household, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.
24 Ensuite David vint dans le camp, et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d’Israël avec lui.
Then came David to Machanayim: and Abshalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25 Et Absalom établit Amasa sur l’armée au lieu de Joab. Or Amasa était fils d’un homme qui s’appelait Jétra, de Jezraël, qui avait été avec Abigaïl, fille de Naas, sœur de Sarvia, laquelle fut mère de Joab.
And Abshalom placed 'Amassa instead of Joab as captain over the army: and 'Amassa was the son of a man, whose name was Yithra the Israelite, who had gone in to Abigal the daughter of Nachash, the sister of Zeruyah Joab's mother.
26 Et Israël campa avec Absalom dans la terre de Galaad.
And Israel and Abshalom encamped in the land of Gil'ad.
27 Et lorsque David fut venu dans le camp, Sobi, fils de Naas, de Rabbath des enfants d’Ammon, et Machir, fils d’Ammihel de Lodabar, et Berzellaï, le Galaadite, de Rogelim,
And it came to pass, when David was come to Machanayim, that Shobi the son of Nachash of Rabbah of the children of 'Ammon, and Machir the son of 'Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gil'adite of Rogelim,
28 Lui offrirent des lits, des tapis, des vases de terre, du blé, de l’orge, de la farine, des grains rôtis, des fèves, des lentilles, des pois grillés.
Brought beds, and bowls, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,
29 Du miel, du beurre, des brebis, et des veaux gras; et ils les donnèrent à David et au peuple qui était avec lui pour manger: car ils supposèrent que le peuple était abattu par la faim et par la soif dans le désert.
And honey, and cream, and sheep, and cow's cheese, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
