2 Samuel 14

1 Mais Joab, fils de Sarvia, comprenant que le cœur du roi était tourné vers Absalom,

Then Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah perceyued, that the Kings heart was toward Absalom,

2 Envoya à Thécua, et fit venir de là une femme sage, et lui dit: Feins de pleurer, et revêts-toi d’un vêtement de deuil; et ne t’oins pas d’huile, afin que tu sois comme une femme qui depuis longtemps pleure un mort;

And Ioab sent to Tekoah, and brought thence a subtile woman, and sayd vnto her, I pray thee, fayne thy selfe to mourne, and nowe put on mourning apparel, and anoynt not thy selfe with oyle: but be as a woman that had now long time mourned for the dead.

3 Et tu entreras chez le roi, et tu lui tiendras un tel discours. Or, Joab mit les paroles en sa bouche.

And come to the King, and speake on this maner vnto him, (for Ioab taught her what she should say).

4 C’est pourquoi, lorsque la femme de Thécua fut entrée chez le roi, elle tomba devant lui sur la terre, et se prosterna, et dit: Sauvez-moi, ô roi!

Then the woman of Tekoah spake vnto the king, and fel downe on her face to the ground, and did obeysance, and sayd, Helpe, O King.

5 Et le roi lui demanda: Qu’as-tu? Celle-ci répondit: Hélas! je suis une femme veuve, car mon mari est mort.

Then the King sayd vnto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am in deede a widow, and mine husband is dead:

6 Or, votre servante avait deux fils, qui se sont disputés l’un contre l’autre dans la campagne, et il n’y avait personne qui pût les empêcher, et l’un a frappé l’autre, et l’a tué.

And thine handmayd had two sonnes, and they two stroue together in the fielde: (and there was none to part them) so the one smote the other, and slew him.

7 Et voilà que toute la parenté, s’élevant contre votre servante, dit: Livre celui qui a frappé son frère, afin que nous le mettions à mort, pour l’âme de son frère qu’il a tue, et que nous détruisions l’héritier; et ils cherchent à éteindre l’étincelle qui m’a été laissée, afin qu’il ne survive point de nom à mon mari, ni des restes de lui sur la terre.

And beholde, the whole familie is risen against thine handmayde, and they sayde, Deliuer him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the soule of his brother whome hee slewe, that we may destroy the heire also: so they shall quenche my sparkle which is left, and shall not leaue to mine husband neither name nor posteritie vpon the earth.

8 Et le roi dit à cette femme: Va en ta maison, et moi je donnerai des ordres pour toi.

And the King said vnto the woman, Go to thine house, and I wil giue a charge for thee.

9 Et la femme de Thécua dit au roi: Que l’iniquité, mon seigneur roi, soit sur moi et sur la maison de mon père; mais que le roi et son trône soient innocents.

Then the woman of Tekoah said vnto the King, My lord, O King, this trespas be on me, and on my fathers house, and the King and his throne be giltlesse.

10 Et le roi reprit: Amène-moi celui qui te contredira, et il ne recommencera pas à te porter atteinte.

And the King sayde, Bring him to me that speaketh against thee, and he shall touche thee no more.

11 Elle répondit: Que le roi se souvienne du Seigneur son Dieu, afin que les proches du sang ne se multiplient pas pour le venger, et qu’en aucune manière ils ne tuent mon fils. Le roi dit: Le Seigneur vit! il ne tombera pas de cheveu de ton fils sur la terre.

Then said she, I pray thee, let the King remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer many reuengers of blood to destroy, lest they slay my sonne. And he answered, As the Lord liueth, there shall not one heare of thy sonne fall to the earth.

12 La femme reprit donc: Que votre servante dise une parole à mon seigneur, le roi. Et il répondit: Parle.

Then the woman said, I pray thee, let thine handmayde speake a worde to my lord the King. And he sayd, Say on.

13 Et la femme dit: Pourquoi avez-vous pensé une pareille chose contre le peuple de Dieu, et pourquoi le roi a-t-il dit cette parole, pour pécher, en ne rappelant pas celui qu’il a banni?

Then the woman sayde, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? or why doeth the King, as one which is faultie, speake this thing, that he will not bring againe his banished?

14 Nous mourons tous, et nous nous écoulons sur la terre comme les eaux qui ne reviennent point: et Dieu ne veut pas qu’une âme périsse; mais il temporise, pensant que celui qui a été rejeté ne doit pas périr entièrement.

For we must needes dye, and we are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered vp againe: neither doeth God spare any person, yet doeth he appoynt meanes, not to cast out from him, him that is expelled.

15 Maintenant donc, je suis venue pour dire à mon seigneur le roi cette parole, le peuple présent. Et votre servante a dit: Je parlerai au roi, pour voir s’il accomplira de quelque manière la parole de sa servante.

Nowe therefore that I am come to speake of this thing vnto my lord the King, the cause is that the people haue made me afrayd: therefore thine handmayde sayd, Nowe will I speake vnto the King: it may be that the King will perfourme the request of his handmayde.

16 Et le roi a écouté, pour délivrer sa servante de tous ceux qui voulaient exterminer de l’héritage de Dieu moi et mon fils en même temps.

For the King wil heare, to deliuer his handmayde out of the hande of the man that woulde destroy mee, and also my sonne from the inheritance of God.

17 Que votre servante donc puisse dire: Que la parole de mon seigneur le roi s’accomplisse comme un sacrifice. Car comme est un ange de Dieu, ainsi est mon seigneur le roi, qu’il ne s’émeut ni de la bénédiction, ni de la malédiction: d’où le Seigneur votre Dieu même est avec vous.

Therefore thine handmaid sayd, The word of my lord the King shall now be comfortable: for my lorde the King is euen as an Angel of God in hearing of good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God be with thee.

18 Et répondant, le roi dit à la femme: Ne me cache point la chose que je te demande. Et la femme lui répondit: Parlez, mon seigneur le roi.

Then the King answered, and said vnto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall aske thee. And the woman sayde, Let my lord the King now speake.

19 Et le roi dit: Est-ce que la main de Joab n’est pas avec toi en toutes ces choses? La femme répondit, et dit: Par le salut de votre âme, mon seigneur le roi! il n’y a rien ni à gauche ni à droite de tout ce qu’a dit mon seigneur le roi; car votre serviteur Joab lui-même m’a ordonné, et lui-même a mis dans la bouche de votre servante toutes ces paroles.

And the King said, Is not the hand of Ioab with thee in all this? Then the woman answered, and sayd, As thy soule liueth, my lord the King, I will not turne to the right hande nor to the left, from ought that my lorde the King hath spoken: for euen thy seruant Ioab bade mee, and he put all these wordes in the mouth of thine handmayde.

20 Votre serviteur Joab m’a ordonné de tourner ainsi la forme de ces paroles; mais vous, mon seigneur le roi, vous êtes sage, comme est sage un ange de Dieu, en sorte que vous comprenez toutes choses sur la terre.

For to the intent that I should chage the forme of speach, thy seruant Ioab hath done this thing: but my lord is wise according to the wisdome of an Angel of God to vnderstande all things that are in the earth.

21 Et le roi dit à Joab: Voilà qu’apaisé, j’ai accompli ta parole: va donc, et rappelle le jeune Absalom.

And the King sayde vnto Ioab, Beholde nowe, I haue done this thing: go then, and bring the yong man Absalom againe.

22 Alors Joab, tombant sur sa face contre terre, se prosterna, et souhaita toute sorte de prospérité au roi; puis Joab dit: Aujourd’hui votre serviteur a compris que j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, mon seigneur le roi: car vous avez accompli la parole de votre serviteur.

And Ioab fell to the grounde on his face, and bowed himselfe, and thanked the King. Then Ioab sayde, This day thy seruant knoweth, that I haue found grace in thy sight, my lord the King, in that the King hath fulfilled the request of his seruant.

23 Joab donc se leva, et s’en alla à Gessur, et il amena Absalom à Jérusalem.

And Ioab arose, and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Ierusalem.

24 Mais le roi dit: Qu’il retourne en sa maison, et qu’il ne voie point ma face. C’est pourquoi Absalom retourna en sa maison, et ne vit pas la face du roi,

And the King sayde, Let him turne to his owne house, and not see my face. So Absalom turned to his owne house, and saw not the Kings face.

25 Or, il n’y avait pas d’homme en tout Israël comme Absalom, beau et très agréable: depuis la plante du pied jusqu’à la tête, il n’y avait en lui aucun défaut.

Nowe in all Israel there was none to be so much praysed for beautie as Absalom: from the sole of his foote euen to the toppe of his head there was no blemish in him.

26 Et quand il tondait ses cheveux (or, on le tondait une fois dans l’année, parce que sa chevelure chargeait sa tête), il pesait les cheveux de sa tête avec deux cents sicles, selon le poids public.

And when he polled his head, (for at euery yeeres ende he polled it: because it was too heauie for him, therefore he polled it) he weyghed the heare of his head at two hundreth shekels by the Kings weight.

27 Or, il naquit à Absalom trois fils, et une fille, du nom de Thamar, d’une élégante beauté.

And Absalom had three sonnes, and one daughter named Tamar, which was a fayre woman to looke vpon.

28 Et Absalom demeura à Jérusalem pendant deux ans, et il ne vit pas la face du roi.

So Absalom dwelt the space of two yeres in Ierusalem, and saw not the Kings face.

29 C’est pourquoi il envoya vers Joab pour l’envoyer vers le roi; Joab ne voulut pas venir vers lui. Et lorsqu’il eut envoyé une seconde fois, et que celui-ci eut refusé de venir vers lui,

Therefore Absalom sent for Ioab to sende him to the King, but he would not come to him: and when he sent againe, he would not come.

30 Il dit à ses serviteurs: Vous savez que le champ de Joab, près de mon champ, contient une moisson d’orge: allez donc et mettez-le à feu. Les serviteurs d’Absalom mirent donc à feu la moisson. Et les serviteurs de Joab, venant, après avoir déchiré leurs vêtements, dirent: Les serviteurs d’Absalom ont mis une partie du champ à feu.

Therefore he sayde vnto his seruants, Beholde, Ioab hath a fielde by my place, and hath barley therein: go, and set it on fire: and Absaloms seruants set the field on fire.

31 Alors Joab se leva, et vint vers Absalom en sa maison, et dit: Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-ils mis ma moisson à feu?

Then Ioab arose, and came to Absalom vnto his house, and sayd vnto him, Wherefore haue thy seruants burnt my field with fire?

32 Et Absalom répondit à Joab: J’ai envoyé vers toi, te conjurant de venir vers moi, que je t’enverrais vers le roi, et que tu lui dirais: Pourquoi suis-je venu de Gessur? Il valait mieux pour moi d’être là: je vous conjure donc, que je voie la face du roi; que s’il se souvient de mon iniquité, qu’il me tue.

And Absalom answered Ioab, Beholde, I sent for thee, saying, Come thou hither, and I wil send thee to the King for to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had bene better for me to haue bene there still: nowe therefore let mee see the Kings face: and if there be any trespasse in me, let him kill me.

33 C’est pourquoi étant entré chez le roi, Joab lui déclara tout; et Absalom fut appelé; il entra chez le roi, et se prosterna sur la face de la terre devant lui; et le roi embrassa Absalom.

Then Ioab came to the King, and told him: and he called for Absalom, who came to the King, and bowed himselfe to the grounde on his face before the King, and the King kissed Absalom.
