1 Or, les fils des prophètes dirent à Élisée: Voilà que ce lieu dans lequel nous habitons avec vous est étroit pour nous.
The sons of the prophets told Elisha, “Look, the place we meet with you is too small for us.
2 Laissez-nous aller jusqu’au Jourdain, afin que chacun prenne son bois de la forêt, et que nous nous bâtissions là un lieu pour y habiter. Élisée répondit: Allez.
Let's go to the Jordan and each of us can carry one log back. We can build a new place there for us to meet.” “Go ahead,” said Elisha.
3 Et l’un d’eux dit: Venez donc vous aussi avec vos serviteurs. Il répondit: J’irai.
One of them asked, “Please come with your servants.” “I'll come,” he replied.
4 Et il s’en alla avec eux. Et lorsqu’ils furent venus au Jourdain, ils coupèrent leur bois.
So he went with them. When they got to the Jordan, they started cutting down trees.
5 Mais il arriva que, comme l’un d’eux abattait son bois, le fer de la cognée tomba dans l’eau; et celui-là s’écria et dit: Hélas! hélas! hélas! mon seigneur, c’était le même que j’avais emprunté.
But as one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no! My master, it was one that was borrowed!” he shouted.
6 Alors l’homme de Dieu dit: Où est-il tombé? Et il lui montra l’endroit. Élisée coupa donc un morceau de bois et le jeta là, et le fer nagea,
“Where did it fall?” the man of God asked. When he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron axhead float.
7 Et il dit: Prends-le. Celui-ci étendit la main et le prit.
“Pick it up,” Elisha told the man. So he reached out his hand and picked it up.
8 Or le roi de Syrie combattait contre Israël, et il tint conseil avec ses serviteurs, disant: Plaçons une embuscade en ce lieu-ci et en celui-là.
The Aramean king was at war with Israel. After consulting with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in this particular place.”
9 C’est pourquoi l’homme de Dieu envoya vers le roi d’Israël, disant; Gardez-vous de passer en ce lieu-là, parce que les Syriens y sont en embuscade.
Then the man of God sent a warning to the king of Israel: “Watch out if you go near this place, because the Arameans are going to be there.”
10 C’est pourquoi le roi d’Israël envoya au lieu que lui avait dit l’homme de Dieu, et il l’occupa le premier, et il s’y abrita non pas une fois, ni deux fois.
So the king of Israel sent a warning to the place the man of God had indicated. Elisha repeatedly warned the king, so that he was on the alert in those places.
11 Et le cœur du roi de Syrie fut troublé de cela; et, ses serviteurs convoqués, il dit: Pourquoi ne me découvrez-vous point qui est celui qui me trahit auprès du roi d’Israël?
This made the Aramean king really mad. He summoned his officers, demanding an answer: “Tell me, which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
12 Et l’un de ses serviteurs dit: Point du tout, mon seigneur le roi; mais Élisée le prophète, qui est en Israël, découvre au roi d’Israël toutes les paroles que vous dites dans votre chambre.
“It's none of us, my lord the king,” one of his officers replied. “It's Elisha, the prophet who lives in Israel—he tells the king of Israel even what you say in your bedroom.”
13 Et il leur dit: Allez, voyez où il est, afin que j’envoie et que je le prenne. Ils lui annoncèrent donc, disant: Voilà qu’il est à Dothan.
So the king gave the order, “Go and find out where he is so I can send soldiers to capture him.” He was told, “Elisha is in Dothan.”
14 Il y envoya donc des chevaux, des chariots et une forte armée; ceux-ci, étant arrivés durant la nuit, investirent la ville.
So he sent horses, chariots, and a large army. They came at night and surrounded the town.
15 Or, se levant au point du jour, et étant sorti, le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu vit une armée autour de la ville, des chevaux et des chariots, et il l’annonça à Élisée, disant: Hélas! hélas! hélas! mon seigneur, que ferons-nous?
Early in the morning when the servant of the man of God got up, he went out and saw that an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my master, what are we going to do?” he asked Elisha.
16 Mais Élisée lui répondit: Ne crains point; car il y en a un plus grand nombre avec nous qu’avec eux.
Elisha replied, “Don't be afraid, for there are many more who are with us than there are with them!”
17 Et lorsque Élisée eut prié, il dit: Seigneur, ouvrez ses yeux, afin qu’il voie. Et le Seigneur ouvrit les yeux du serviteur, et il vit; et voilà la montagne pleine de chevaux et de chariots de feu autour d’Élisée.
Elisha prayed, saying, “Lord, please open his eyes so he can see.” The Lord opened the servant's eyes, and when he looked he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
18 Cependant les ennemis descendirent vers lui, et Élisée pria le Seigneur, disant: Frappez, je vous conjure, ce peuple d’aveuglement. Et le Seigneur les frappa pour qu’ils ne vissent point, selon la prière d’Élisée.
As the army descended on him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.
19 Alors Élisée leur dit: Ce n’est pas là le chemin, et ce n’est pas là la ville; suivez-moi, et je vous montrerai l’homme que vous cherchez. Ils les mena donc dans Samarie.
Then Elisha went and told them, “This isn't the right road, and this isn't the right town. Follow me, and I'll take you to the man you're looking for.” He led them to Samaria.
20 Et lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Élisée dit: Seigneur, ouvrez leurs yeux, afin qu’ils voient. Et le Seigneur ouvrit leurs yeux, et ils virent qu’ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
After they had entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, “Lord, open the eyes of these men that they can see.” The Lord opened their eyes, and they looked around and saw that they were in Samaria.
21 Et le roi d’Israël dit à Élisée, lorsqu’il les vit: Les tuerai-je, mon père?
When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
22 Mais Élisée répondit: Vous ne les tuerez point; car vous ne les avez pas pris avec votre glaive, et avec votre arc, pour que vous les fassiez périr; mais mettez du pain et de l’eau devant eux, afin qu’ils mangent et qu’ils boivent, et qu’ils aillent vers leur maître.
“No, don't you kill them!” he replied. “Would you kill prisoners you captured with your own sword or bow? Give them some food and water so that they may eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.”
23 Il leur fut donc servi un grand repas; ils mangèrent et ils burent; puis il les renvoya, et ils s’en allèrent vers leur maître, et il ne vint plus de voleurs de Syrie dans la terre d’Israël.
So the king had a great feast prepared for them, and once they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them back to their master. The Aramean raiders did not enter the land of Israel again.
24 Mais il arriva après cela que Bénadad, roi de Syrie, assembla toute son armée, monta et assiégea Samarie.
Sometime after this Ben-hadad king of Aram called up all his army and went to lay siege to Samaria.
25 Et il vint une grande famine dans Samarie; et elle fut si longtemps assiégée, qu’une tête d’âne était vendue quatre-vingt sicles d’argent; et la quatrième partie d’un cab de fiente de colombes, cinq sicles d’argent.
So there was a major famine in Samaria. In fact the siege lasted so long that a donkey's head cost eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter cab of dove's dung cost five shekels of silver.
26 Et comme le roi d’Israël passait le long du mur, une certaine femme lui cria, disant: Sauvez-moi, mon seigneur le roi.
As the king of Israel was walking by on the city wall, a woman called out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
27 Le roi répondit: Le Seigneur ne te sauve pas: au moyen de quoi puis-je te sauver? au moyen de l’aire ou du pressoir? Et le roi lui demanda: Que veux-tu dire? Elle lui répondit:
“If the Lord doesn't help you, why would you think I can help you?” the king replied. “I don't have grain from the threshing floor, or wine from the winepress.”
28 Cette femme-ci m’a dit: Donne ton fils, afin que nous le mangions aujourd’hui, et nous mangerons mon fils demain.
But then he asked her, “What's the problem?” “This woman told me, ‘Give up your son and we'll eat him today, and tomorrow we'll eat my son,’” she answered.
29 Nous avons donc fait cuire mon fils, et nous l’avons mangé. Je lui ai dit le jour suivant: Donne ton fils, afin que nous le mangions. Et elle a caché son fils.
“So we cooked my son and we ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we can eat him,’ but she's hidden her son.”
30 Ce qu’ayant entendu le roi, il déchira ses vêtements; et il passait le long du mur; et tout le peuple vit le cilice dont il était couvert intérieurement sur sa chair,
When the king heard what the woman said he ripped his clothes. As he walked by on the wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
31 Et le roi dit: Que Dieu me fasse ceci, et qu’il ajoute cela, si la tête d’Élisée, fils de Saphat, demeure sur lui aujourd’hui!
“May God punish me very severely if the head of Elisha, son of Shaphat, remains on his shoulders today!” he declared.
32 Or Élisée était assis dans sa maison, et les vieillards étaient assis avec lui. C’est pourquoi le roi envoya en avant un homme; et, avant que ce messager arrivât, Élisée dit aux vieillards: Savez-vous que ce fils du meurtrier a envoyé ici pour qu’on me coupe la tête? Voyez donc, lorsque viendra le messager, fermez la porte, et ne le laissez pas entrer: car voilà que le bruit des pieds de son seigneur s’entend derrière lui.
Elisha was sitting in his house with the elders. The king had sent a messenger on ahead, but before he got there, Elisha told the elders, “Can you see how this murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? So, as soon as the messenger arrives, close the door and hold it shut against him. Isn't that the sound of his master's footsteps following him?”
33 Élisée leur parlant encore, parut le messager, qui venait à lui. Or il dit: Eh bien, ce mal si grand vient du Seigneur; qu’attendrai-je de plus du Seigneur?
While Elisha was still speaking with them, the messenger arrived. The king said, “This disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”
