1 Or une certaine femme d’entre les femmes des prophètes criait à Élisée, disant: Ton serviteur, mon mari, est mort; et toi, tu sais que ton serviteur fut craignant le Seigneur: et voilà qu’un créancier vient, afin de prendre mes deux fils pour le servir.

Now a certain woman, from the wives of the prophets, cried out to Elisha, saying: “My husband, your servant, is dead. And you know that your servant was one who fears the Lord. And behold, a creditor has arrived, so that he may take away my two sons to serve him.”

2 Élisée lui dit: Que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi? Dis-moi, qu’as-tu dans ta maison? Et elle répondit: Je n’ai, moi ta servante, dans ma maison qu’un peu d’huile dont je m’oins.

And Elisha said to her: “What do you want me to do for you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” And she responded, “I, your handmaid, do not have anything in my house, except a little oil, with which I may be anointed.”

3 Il lui dit: Va, emprunte de tes voisines un grand nombre de vases vides,

And he said to her: “Go, ask to borrow from all your neighbors empty vessels, more than a few.

4 Puis rentre, et ferme ta porte, lorsque tu seras dedans, toi et tes fils; verse de cette huile dans tous ces vases; et quand ils seront pleins, tu les emporteras.

And enter and close your door. And when you are inside with your sons, pour from the oil into all those vessels. And when they are full, take them away.”

5 C’est pourquoi cette femme s’en alla et ferma la porte sur elle et sur ses fils; ceux-ci lui présentaient les vases, et elle y versait l’huile.

And so, the woman went and closed the door upon herself and her sons. They were bringing her the vessels, and she was pouring into them.

6 Et lorsque les vases furent pleins, elle dit à son fils: Apporte-moi encore un vase. Et il lui répondit: Je n’en ai point. Et l’huile s’arrêta.

And when the vessels had been filled, she said to her son, “Bring me another a vessel.” And he responded, “I have none.” And there was oil remaining.

7 Or cette femme vint et raconta tout à l’homme de Dieu. Et lui: Va, dit-il, vends l’huile, et rends à ton créancier ce qui lui est dû; mais toi et tes fils, vivez avec le reste.

Then she went and told the man of God. And he said: “Go, sell the oil, and repay your creditor. Then you and your sons may live on what remains.”

8 Or un certain jour arriva, et Élisée passait par Sunam: or il y avait là une femme considérable, laquelle le retint pour qu’il mangeât du pain; et comme il passait souvent par là, il allait loger chez elle pour manger du pain.

Now it happened that, on a certain day, Elisha passed by Shunem. And there was a great woman there, who took him to eat bread. And since he frequently passed by there, he turned aside to her house, so that he might eat bread.

9 Cette femme dit à son mari: Je m’aperçois que c’est un saint, cet homme de Dieu qui passe par chez nous fréquemment.

And she said to her husband: “I have noticed that he is a holy man of God, who passes by us frequently.

10 Faisons-lui donc une petite chambre, et mettons-y un lit, une table, un siège et un chandelier, afin que, lorsqu’il viendra chez nous, il demeure là.

Therefore, let us prepare a small upper room for him, and place a bed in it for him, and a table, and a chair, and a lampstand, so that when he comes to us, he may stay there.”

11 Un certain jour arriva donc, et Élisée venant, alla loger en cette chambre et s’y reposa.

Then it happened that, on a certain day, arriving, he turned aside into the upper room, and he rested there.

12 Et il dit à Giézi, son serviteur: Appelle cette Sunamite, Lorsque Giézi l’eut appelée, et qu’elle se tenait devant lui,

And he said to his servant Gehazi, “Call this Shunammite woman.” And when he had called her, and she stood before him,

13 Il dit à son serviteur: Dis-lui: Voilà que tu nous as servis soigneusement; que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi? As-tu quelque affaire, et veux-tu que je parle au roi ou au prince de la milice? Elle lui répondit: J’habite au milieu de mon peuple.

he said to his servant: “Say to her: Behold, you have ministered to us attentively in all things. What do you want, that I might do for you? Do you have any business, or do you want me to speak to the king, or to the leader of the military?” And she responded, “I live in the midst of my own people.”

14 Il dit encore: Que veut-elle donc que je fasse pour elle? Et Giézi répondit: Ne cherchez pas; car elle n’a point de fils, et son mari est vieux.

And he said, “Then what does she want, that I might do for her?” And Gehazi said: “You need not ask. For she has no son, and her husband is elderly.”

15 C’est pourquoi il ordonna de l’appeler; et lorsqu’elle eut été appelée, et qu’elle se tenait devant la porte,

And so, he instructed him to call her. And when she had been called, and was standing before the door,

16 Il lui dit: Dans ce temps et à cette même heure, si tu vis encore, tu auras en ton sein un fils. Mais elle répondit: Non, je te prie, mon seigneur, homme de Dieu, non, ne mens pas à ta servante.

he said to her, “At this time, and at this same hour, with life as a companion, you will have a son in your womb.” But she responded, “Do not, I ask you, my lord, a man of God, do not be willing to lie to your handmaid.”

17 Et cette femme conçut, et elle enfanta un fils dans le temps et à la même heure qu’Élisée avait dit.

And the woman conceived. And she bore a son, in the time and at the same hour as Elisha had said.

18 Or l’enfant grandit; et comme il arriva un certain jour qu’il était sorti vers son père, vers les moissonneurs,

And the boy grew. And on a certain day, when he had gone out to his father, to the harvesters,

19 Il dit à son père: J’ai mal à la tête, j’ai mal à la tête. Celui-ci dit à son serviteur: Prends cet enfant, et conduis-le à sa mère.

he said to his father: “I have a pain in my head. I have a pain in my head.” But he said to his servant, “Take him, and lead him to his mother.”

20 Lorsque le serviteur l’eut pris et l’eut conduit à sa mère, celle-ci le mit sur ses genoux jusqu’à midi, et il mourut.

But when he had taken him, and he had led him to his mother, she placed him upon her knees, until midday, and then he died.

21 Or elle monta et le plaça sur le lit de l’homme de Dieu, et elle ferma la porte; et, étant sortie,

Then she went up and laid him out on the bed of the man of God, and she closed the door. And departing,

22 Elle appela son mari, et dit: Envoie avec moi, je te conjure, un de tes serviteurs et une ânesse, pour que je coure jusqu’à l’homme de Dieu, et je reviendrai.

she called her husband, and she said: “Send with me, I beg you, one of your servants, and a donkey, so that I may hurry to the man of God, and then return.”

23 Son mari lui demanda: Pour quel motif vas-tu vers lui? Aujourd’hui ce ne sont point des calendes ni un sabbat. Elle répondit: J’irai.

And he said to her: “What is the reason that you would go to him? Today is not the new moon, and it is not the Sabbath.” She responded, “I will go.”

24 Et elle sella l’ânesse, et ordonna à son serviteur: Conduis, et hâte-toi, ne me retarde point en allant, et fais ce que je t’ordonne.

And she saddled a donkey, and she instructed her servant: “Drive, and hurry on. You shall cause no delay for me in departing. And do whatever I instruct you to do.”

25 Elle partit donc, et vint vers l’homme de Dieu sur la montagne du Carmel; et lorsque l’homme de Dieu l’eut vue en face de lui, il dit à Giézi son serviteur: Voilà cette Sunamite.

And so she set out. And she came to the man of God, on mount Carmel. And when the man of God had seen her at a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi: “Behold, it is that Shunammite woman.

26 Va donc à sa rencontre, et dis-lui: Tout va-t-il bien pour vous, pour votre mari et pour votre fils? Elle répondit: Bien.

So then, go to meet her, and say to her, ‘Does all go well concerning you, and your husband, and your son?’” And she answered, “It is well.”

27 Et, lorsqu’elle fut venue vers l’homme de Dieu sur la montagne, elle saisit ses pieds, et Giézi s’approcha pour l’écarter. Mais l’homme de Dieu dit: Laissez-la: car son âme est dans l’amertume, et le Seigneur me l’a caché et ne me l’a point fait connaître.

And when she had arrived at the man of God, on the mount, she took hold of his feet. And Gehazi drew near, so that he might remove her. But the man of God said: “Permit her. For her soul is in bitterness. And the Lord has concealed it from me, and has not revealed it to me.”

28 Cette femme lui dit: Ai-je demandé un fils à mon seigneur? Ne t’ai-je pas dit: Ne me trompe point?

And she said to him: “Did I ask a son from my lord? Did I not say to you, ‘You should not deceive me?’”

29 Élisée dit à Giézi: Ceins tes reins, et prends mon bâton en ta main, et va. Si un homme te rencontre, ne le salue point; et si quelqu’un te salue, ne lui réponds point, et mets mon bâton sur la face de l’enfant.

And so he said to Gehazi: “Gird your waist, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If any man will meet you, you shall not greet him. And if anyone greets you, you shall not respond to him. And place my staff upon the face of the boy.”

30 Or la mère de l’enfant dit: Le Seigneur vit et ton âme vit! Je ne te quitterai point. Il se leva donc et la suivit.

But the mother of the boy said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not release you.” Therefore, he rose up, and he followed her.

31 Or Giézi était allé devant eux, et il avait mis le bâton d’Élisée sur la face de l’enfant; mais il n’y avait en lui ni parole ni sentiment. Aussi il retourna à la rencontre de son maître, et il le lui annonça, disant: L’enfant ne s’est pas levé.

But Gehazi had gone before them, and he had placed the staff upon the face of the boy. And there was no voice, nor any response. And so he returned to meet him. And he reported to him, saying, “The boy did not rise up.”

32 Élisée entra donc dans la maison, et voilà que l’enfant mort gisait sur son lit.

Therefore, Elisha entered the house. And behold, the boy was lying dead upon his bed.

33 Et étant entré, il ferma la porte sur lui et sur l’enfant, et adressa des prières au Seigneur.

And entering, he closed the door upon himself and the boy. And he prayed to the Lord.

34 Puis il monta sur le lit et se coucha sur l’enfant; et il mit sa bouche sur sa bouche, ses yeux sur ses yeux, et ses mains sur ses mains; et il se courba sur lui, et la chair de l’enfant fut échauffée.

And he climbed up, and lay across the boy. And he put his mouth over his mouth, and his eyes over his eyes, and his hands over his hands. And he leaned himself over him, and the body of the boy grew warm.

35 Or étant revenu du lit, il se promena dans la maison une fois ici et une fois là, et il monta et se coucha sur l’enfant; et l’enfant bâilla sept fois et il ouvrit les yeux.

And returning, he walked around the house, first here and then there. And he went up, and lay across him. And the boy gasped seven times, and he opened his eyes.

36 Cependant Élisée appela Giézi, et lui dit: Appelle cette Sunamite. Elle ayant été appelée, entra auprès d’Élisée, et Élisée dit: Emmène ton fils.

And he called Gehazi, and said to him, “Call this Shunammite woman.” And having been called, she entered to him. And he said, “Take up your son.”

37 Cette femme vint, et se jeta à ses pieds, et se prosterna jusqu’à terre; et elle prit son fils et sortit.

She went and fell at his feet, and she reverenced upon the ground. And she took up her son, and departed.

38 Et Élisée retourna à Galgala. Or la famine était sur la terre, et les fils des prophètes habitaient auprès de lui; il dit donc à l’un de ses serviteurs: Prends la grande marmite, et fait cuire un mets pour les fils des prophètes.

And Elisha returned to Gilgal. Now there was a famine in the land, and the sons of the prophets were living in his sight. And he said to one of his servants, “Set out a large cooking pot, and boil a soup for the sons of the prophets.”

39 Et l’un d’eux sortit dans la campagne pour cueillir des herbes des champs; et il trouva comme une vigne sauvage, et il en cueillit des coloquintes sauvages, et il remplit son manteau; et, étant revenu, il les coupa par morceaux dans la marmite pour le mets; car il ne savait ce que c’était.

And one went out into the field, so that he might collect wild herbs. And he found something like a wild vine, and he gathered from it bitter fruits of the field, and he filled his cloak. And returning, he cut these up for the pot of soup. But he did not know what it was.

40 Il les versa ensuite de la marmite pour les serviteurs d’Élisée; mais lorsqu’ils eurent goûté de ce mets, ils crièrent, disant: La mort est dans la marmite, homme de Dieu. Et ils ne purent manger.

Then they poured it out for their companions to eat. And when they had tasted the mixture, they cried out, saying, “Death is in the cooking pot, O man of God!” And they were unable to eat.

41 Mais Élisée: Apportez, dit-il, de la farine. Et lorsqu’ils en eurent apporté, il la mit dans la marmite, et dit: Versez-en pour la troupe, afin qu’ils en mangent. Et il n’y eut plus aucune amertume dans la marmite.

But he said, “Bring some flour.” And when they had brought it, he cast it into the cooking pot, and he said, “Pour it out for the group, so that they may eat.” And there was no longer any bitterness in the cooking pot.

42 Or un certain homme vint de Baalsalisa, portant à l’homme de Dieu des pains des prémices, vingt pains d’orge et du blé nouveau dans sa besace. Élisée dit à son serviteur: Donne au peuple, afin qu’il mange.

Now a certain man arrived from Baal-Shalishah, carrying, for the man of God, bread from the first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and new grain in his satchel. But he said, “Give it to the people, so that they may eat.”

43 Et son serviteur lui répondit: Qu’est-ce que cela pour que je le serve à cent hommes? Élisée dit de nouveau: Donne au peuple, afin qu’il mange; car voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Ils mangeront, et il en restera.

And his servant responded to him, “What amount is this, that I should set it before a hundred men?” But he said again: “Give it to the people, so that they may eat. For thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat, and there shall be still more.’”

44 Il mit donc les pains devant eux, et ils mangèrent, et il en resta, selon la parole du Seigneur.

And so, he set it before them. And they ate, and there was still more, in accord with the word of the Lord.
