1 Josias avait huit ans lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna trente-un ans à Jérusalem: le nom de sa mère était Idida, fille de Hadaïa de Bésécath.
Eight years old was Josiah when he became king, and thirty and one years did he reign in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Yedidah, the daughter of 'Adayah of Bozkath.
2 Et il fit ce qui était agréable devant le Seigneur, et marcha dans toutes les voies de David, son père, et il ne se détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.
And he did what is right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right or to the left.
3 Or la dix-huitième année du roi Josias, le roi envoya Saphan, fils d’Aslia, fils de Messulam, le scribe du temple du Seigneur, lui disant:
And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azalyahu, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the Lord, saying,
4 Va vers Helcias, le grand prêtre, afin qu’on fasse fondre l’argent qui a été porté au temple du Seigneur, que les portiers du temple ont recueilli du peuple;
Go up to Chilkiyahu the high-priest, that he may collect up all the money which is brought into the house of the Lord, which the door-keepers have gathered from the people:
5 Et qu’il soit donné par les préposés de la maison du Seigneur aux ouvriers, et que ceux-ci le distribuent à ceux qui travaillent, dans le temple du Seigneur, à faire les réparations du temple,
And let them deliver it into the hand of those who overlook the workmen, that have been appointed as overseers of the house of the Lord; and let them give it to those who do the work who are in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house:
6 C’est-à-dire aux charpentiers, aux maçons, et à ceux qui réparent les brèches, et afin qu’on achète du bois et des pierres des carrières, pour réparer le temple du Seigneur.
Unto the carpenters, and the builders, and the masons, and to buy timber and hewn stones to repair the house.
7 Cependant, qu’on ne leur compte pas l’argent qu’ils reçoivent; mais qu’ils l’aient en leur pouvoir, et selon leur bonne foi.
Nevertheless shall there be no reckoning made with them for the money that is delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully.
8 Or Helcias, le pontife, dit à Saphan, le scribe: J’ai trouvé le Livre de la Loi dans la maison du Seigneur. Et Helcias donna le volume à Saphan, qui le lut.
And Chilkiyahu the high-priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, A book of the law have I found in the house of the Lord. And Chilkiyah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
9 Saphan, le scribe, vint aussi vers le roi, et lui rendit compte de ce qu’il lui avait ordonné, et il dit: Vos serviteurs ont fondu l’argent qui a été trouvé dans la maison du Seigneur, et ils l’ont donné pour qu’il fût distribué aux ouvriers par les préposés aux travaux du temple du Seigneur.
And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have taken out all the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of those who overlook the workmen, that have been appointed overseers of the house of the Lord.
10 Saphan, le scribe, raconta aussi au roi, disant: Helcias, le prêtre, m’a donné un Livre. Lorsque Saphan l’eut lu devant le roi,
And Shaphan the scribe also told the king, saying, A book hath Chilkiyahu the priest given me. And Shaphan read it before the king.
11 Et que le roi eut entendu les paroles du livre de la loi du Seigneur, il déchira ses vêtements.
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
12 Et il ordonna à Helcias, le prêtre, à Ahicam, fils de Saphan, à Achobor, fils de Micha, à Saphan, le scribe, et Asaïas, serviteur du roi, disant:
And the king commanded Chilkiyah the priest, and Achikam the son of Shaphan, and 'Achbor the son of Michayah, and Shaphan the scribe, and 'Assahyah a servant of the king's, saying,
13 Allez, et consultez le Seigneur sur moi, sur le peuple et sur tout Juda, touchant les paroles de ce volume qui a été trouvé; car la grande colère du Seigneur s’est allumée contre nous, parce que nos pères n’ont point écouté les paroles de ce Livre, pour faire ce qui a été écrit pour nous.
Go ye, inquire of the Lord in my behalf, and in behalf of the people, and in behalf of all Judah, concerning the words of this book that hath been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that hath been kindled against us, because our fathers did not hearken unto the words of this book, to do in accordance with all that is prescribed concerning us.
14 C’est pourquoi Helcias, le prêtre, Ahicam, Achobor, Saphan et Asaïas, allèrent vers Holda, la prophétesse, femme de Sellum, fils de Thécua, fils d’Araas, le gardien des vêtements, laquelle demeurait à Jérusalem dans la Seconde; et ils lui parlèrent.
And Chilkiyahu the priest, and Achikam, and 'Achbor, and Shaphan, and 'Assahyah, went unto Chuldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Charchass, the keeper of the wardrobe; [now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the suburb; ] and they spoke unto her.
15 Et Holda leur répondit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Dites à l’homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:
And she said unto them, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Say unto the man that hath sent you to me,
16 Le Seigneur dit ceci: Voilà que moi j’amènerai des maux sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, accomplissant toutes les paroles de la Loi, qu’a lues le roi de Juda,
Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read;
17 Parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné, qu’ils ont sacrifié à des dieux étrangers, et qu’ils m’ont irrité par toutes les œuvres de leurs mains; mon indignation s’allumera en ce lieu, et elle ne s’éteindra pas.
Because they have forsaken me, and have burnt incense unto other gods, in order to provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands: therefore is my wrath kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.
18 Mais au roi de Juda, qui vous a envoyés pour consulter le Seigneur c’est ainsi que vous direz: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Parce que tu as écouté les paroles du volume,
But with respect to the king of Judah who sendeth you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall ye say to him, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Concerning the words which thou hast heard;
19 Que ton cœur en a été épouvanté, et que tu t’es humilié devant le Seigneur, ayant entendu mes paroles contre ce lieu et ses habitants, c’est-à-dire qu’ils seraient un objet de stupeur et de malédiction; et parce que tu as déchiré tes vêtements et pleuré devant moi, et que moi je t’ai écouté, dit le Seigneur:
Because thy heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I had spoken against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become an astonishment and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me: I also have heard it, saith the Lord.
20 C’est pourquoi je te réunirai à tes pères, et tu seras conduit au sépulcre en paix, afin que tes yeux ne voient point tous les maux que je vais amener sur ce lieu.
Therefore, behold, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered unto thy graves in peace; and thy eyes shall not look on all the evil which I am bringing over this place. And they brought the king word again.
