2 Corinthiens 8
1 Nous vous faisons connaître, mes frères, la grâce de Dieu, qui a été accordée aux Églises de Macédoine:
We want to remind you, friends, of the love that God has shown to the churches in Macedonia –
2 C’est que dans les épreuves nombreuses de la tribulation, ils en ont eu une joie abondante, et que leur pauvreté extrême a répandu avec abondance les richesses de leur charité sincère.
How, tired though they were by many a trouble, their overflowing happiness, and even their deep poverty, resulted in a flood of generosity.
3 Car je leur rends ce témoignage qu’ils ont donné de leur propre mouvement autant qu’ils pouvaient, et même plus qu’ils ne pouvaient,
I can bear witness that to the full extent of their power, and even beyond their power, spontaneously,
4 Nous conjurant avec beaucoup d’instances d’accepter leurs aumônes, et leur part à la dispensation qui se fait pour les saints.
and with many an appeal to us for permission, they showed their love, and contributed their share towards the fund for their fellow Christians.
5 Et surpassant notre espérance, ils se sont donnés eux-mêmes, premièrement à Dieu, ensuite à nous par la volonté de Dieu;
And that, not only in the way we had expected; but first they gave themselves to the Lord, and to us also, in accordance with God’s will.
6 En sorte que nous avons prié Tite que, selon qu’il a déjà commencé, il achève parmi nous cette bonne œuvre,
And this led us to beg Titus, that since he had started the work for you, he should also see to the completion of this expression of your love.
7 Et que comme vous abondez en toutes choses, en foi, en parole, en science, en toute sollicitude, et de plus en affection pour nous, vous abondiez aussi en cette sorte de grâce.
And, remembering how you excel in everything – in faith, in teaching, in knowledge, in unfailing earnestness, and in the affection that we have awakened in you – I ask you to excel also in this expression of your love.
8 Ce que je ne dis pas comme faisant un commandement, mais pour que, voyant l’empressement des autres, vous fassiez preuve de la sincérité de votre charité.
I am not laying a command on you, but I am making use of the earnestness shown by others to test the genuineness of your affection.
9 Car vous connaissez la bonté de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui s’est fait pauvre pour vous, bien qu’il fût riche, afin que par sa pauvreté vous fussiez riches.
For you do not forget the loving kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ – how that for your sakes, although he was rich, he became poor, so that you also might become rich through his poverty.
10 C’est donc un conseil que je vous donne ici, parce que cela vous est d’autant plus utile, que non-seulement vous avez commencé à faire cette charité, mais que vous en avez conçu le dessein dès l’année précédente.
I am only making suggestions on this matter; for this is the best course for you, since you were a year before others, not only in taking action, but also in showing your readiness to do so.
11 Maintenant donc, achevez votre œuvre, afin que, comme votre cœur a été si prompt à la vouloir, il le soit aussi à l’accomplir d’après ce que vous possédez.
And now I want you to complete the work, so that its completion may correspond with your willing readiness – in proportion, of course, to your means.
12 Car lorsque la volonté est prompte, elle est agréée, selon que chacun possède, non selon ce qu’il ne possède pas.
For, where there is willingness, a person’s gift is valued by its comparison with what they have, and not with what they do not have.
13 Ainsi, qu’il n’y ait pas pour les autres soulagement, et pour vous surcharge, mais égalité.
For our object is not to give relief to others and bring distress on you. It is a matter of a fair balance.
14 Que pour le moment présent votre abondance supplée à leur indigence, afin que leur abondance supplée aussi à votre indigence, de sorte qu’il y ait égalité, comme il est écrit:
On this occasion what you can spare will supply what they need, at another time what they can spare may supply your need, and so things will be equal.
15 Celui qui recueillit beaucoup n’eut pas plus, et celui qui recueillit peu n’eut pas moins.
As scripture says – ‘Those who had much had nothing over, and those who had little did not lack!’
16 Grâces à Dieu qui a mis la même sollicitude pour vous dans le cœur de Tite!
I thank God for inspiring Titus with the same keen interest in your welfare that I have;
17 Car non-seulement il a bien reçu ma prière, mais, comme il était fort empressé, il est parti de son propre mouvement pour aller vers vous.
for Titus has responded to my appeals and, in his great earnestness, is starting to go to you of his own accord.
18 Nous avons aussi envoyé avec lui un de nos frères dont on fait l’éloge, à cause de l’Evangile, dans toutes les Eglises,
We are sending with him one of the Lord’s followers whose fame in the service of the good news has spread through all the churches;
19 Et qui, de plus, a été désigné par les Eglises comme compagnon de notre voyage pour cette aumône dont nous sommes les dispensateurs pour la gloire de Dieu, et pour seconder notre bonne volonté.
and not only that, but he has been elected by the churches to accompany us on our journey, in connexion with this expression of your love, which we are personally administering to the honor of the Lord, and to show our deep interest.
20 Evitant ainsi que personne ne nous blâme au sujet de cette grande abondance de dons que nous dispensons.
What we are specially guarding against is that any fault should be found with us in regard to our administration of this charitable fund;
21 Car nous tâchons de faire le bien, non-seulement devant Dieu, mais devant les hommes.
for we are trying to make arrangements which will be right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of people.
22 Nous avons encore envoyé avec eux un de nos frères, qu’en beaucoup d’occasions nous avons reconnu être très zélé, et qui l’est encore bien plus maintenant par sa grande confiance en vous,
We are also sending with them another of our friends, whose earnestness we have many a time proved in many ways, and whom we now find made even more earnest by his great confidence in you.
23 Soit à l’égard de Tite, qui est mon compagnon et mon coopérateur auprès de vous; soit à l’égard de nos frères, apôtres des Eglises et gloire du Christ.
If I must say anything about Titus, he is my intimate companion, and he shares my work for you; if it is our friends, they are delegates of the churches, an honor to Christ.
24 Montrez donc bien à la face des Eglises quelle est votre charité envers eux, et le sujet de notre gloire par rapport à vous.
Show them, therefore – so that the churches may see it – the proof of your affection, and the ground for our boasting to them about you.
