2 Chroniques 2

1 Salomon résolut de bâtir une maison au nom du Seigneur, et un palais pour lui.

Then Solomon gave word to build a house for the Name of Yahweh, and a house for his kingdom.

2 Et il dénombra soixante-dix mille hommes portant des fardeaux sur les épaules, quatre vingt mille pour tailler les pierres dans les montagnes, et leurs préposés, trois mille six cents.

And Solomon numbered seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand men to hew in the mountain, —and, to oversee them, three thousand six hundred.

3 Il envoya aussi vers Hiram, roi de Tyr, disant: Comme vous avez agi avec David, mon père, et comme vous lui avez envoyé des bois de cèdre pour bâtir une maison dans laquelle il a habité,

And Solomon sent unto Huram king of Tyre, saying, —As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him a house to dwell in,

4 Ainsi faites avec moi, afin que je bâtisse une maison au nom du Seigneur mon Dieu, et que je la consacre à brûler de l’encens devant lui, à consumer des aromates, à une exposition des pains perpétuelle, à des holocaustes le matin et le soir, ainsi qu’aux sabbats, aux néoménies et aux solennités du Seigneur notre Dieu à jamais; lesquelles choses ont été ordonnées à Israël.

lo! I, am about to build a house for the Name of Yahweh my God, to hallow unto him—to burn before him sweet incense, and for a continual setting in array, and to offer ascending-sacrifices morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the appointed feasts of Yahweh our God, -age-abiding, is this [law] for Israel.

5 Car la maison que je désire bâtir est grande, parce que notre Dieu est grand au-dessus de tous les dieux.

And, the house which I am about to build, [must be] great, —for great is our God, above all gods.

6 Qui pourra donc être capable de lui bâtir une maison digne de lui? Si le ciel et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent le contenir, qui suis-je, moi, pour pouvoir lui bâtir une maison? Aussi est-ce seulement pour brûler de l’encens devant lui.

But who is able to build unto him a house? for, the heavens, even the heaven of heavens, cannot contain him, —who then am, I, that I should build unto him a house, though only to burn incense before him?

7 Envoyez-moi donc un homme qui s’entende à travailler l’or, l’argent, l’airain, le fer, la pourpre, l’écarlate et l’hyacinthe, et qui sache faire des ciselures, avec les ouvriers que j’ai auprès de moi dans la Judée et à Jérusalem, et que David mon père a préparés.

Now, therefore, send me a wise man, to work in gold and in silver and in bronze and in iron, and in purple and crimson and blue, and skilful to execute gravings, —with the wise men who are with me, in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom my father David did provide.

8 Mais envoyez-moi aussi des bois de cèdre, de genièvre, et des pins du Liban; car je sais que vos serviteurs s’entendent à couper les bois du Liban, et mes serviteurs seront avec vos serviteurs,

And send me—timbers of cedar, cypress and sandal-wood, out of the Lebanon, for, I, know that, thy servants, are skilful, to cut the timbers of Lebanon, —and lo! my servants shall be with thy servants:

9 Afin que l’on me prépare une grande quantité de bois: car la maison que je veux bâtir est très grande et magnifique.

yea to prepare me timbers in abundance, —for, the house which I am about to build, [must be] great and most wonderful.

10 Après cela, aux ouvriers qui doivent couper les bois, à vos serviteurs, je donnerai pour leur nourriture vingt mille cors de blé, autant de mesures d’orge: vingt mille métrètes de vin, et de plus vingt mille mesures d’huile.

And lo! for the hewers that cut the timbers, have I given wheat as food for thy servants, twenty thousand measures, and barley, twenty thousand measures, and wine, twenty thousand baths, and oil, twenty thousand baths.

11 Or Hiram, roi de Tyr, dit dans une lettre qu’il envoya à Salomon: Parce que le Seigneur a aimé son peuple, c’est pourquoi il vous a fait régner sur lui.

Then answered Huram king of Tyre, in writing, which he sent unto Solomon, —Because Yahweh hath loved his people, hath he set thee over them as king.

12 Et il ajouta, disant: Béni le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, qui a fait le ciel et la terre, qui a donné à David, le roi, un fils sage, habile, sensé, prudent, pour bâtir une maison au Seigneur et un palais pour lui-même!

And Huram said, Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth, —who hath given, unto David the king, a wise son, skilled in prudence and understanding, who will build a house for Yahweh, and a house for his kingdom.

13 Je vous envoie donc un homme prudent et d’un très grand savoir, Hiram, mon père,

Now, therefore, have I sent a wise man, skilled in understanding, pertaining to Huram my father:

14 Fils d’une femme d’entre les filles de Dan, dont le père était Tyrien: il sait travailler l’or, l’argent, l’airain, le fer, le marbre, les bois, et même la pourpre, l’hyacinthe, le fin lin et l’écarlate; il sait encore graver toute sorte de figures, et inventer ingénieusement ce qui est nécessaire pour un ouvrage: il travaillera avec vos ouvriers et avec ceux de mon seigneur David, votre père.

son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, whose father was a man of Tyre, skilled to work in gold and in silver, in bronze, in iron, in stones and in timber, in purple, in blue and in fine white linen, and in crimson, and to grave any manner of graving, and to devise any manner of device that may be given to him, with thy wise men, and the wise men of my lord David thy father.

15 Ainsi le blé, l’orge, l’huile et le vin que vous avez promis, mon seigneur, envoyez-les à vos serviteurs.

Now, therefore, the wheat and the barley, the oil and the wine, whereof my lord hath spoken, let him send unto his servants;

16 Pour nous, nous couperons tous les bois du Liban qui vous seront nécessaires, et nous les ferons conduire en radeaux, par mer à Joppé, mais ce sera à vous de les transporter à Jérusalem.

and, we, will cut down timbers out of the Lebanon, according to all thy need, and will bring them unto thee in floats, upon the sea to Joppa, —and, thou, shalt fetch them up to Jerusalem.

17 Salomon dénombra donc tous les hommes prosélytes qui étaient dans la terre d’Israël, depuis le dénombrement qu’en avait fait David, son père, et il s’en trouva cent cinquante mille et trois mille six cents.

So Solomon numbered all the men that were sojourners, who were in the land of Israel, after the numbering, wherewith David his father had numbered them, —and they were found to be—a hundred and fifty-three thousand and six hundred.

18 Il en établit soixante-dix mille pour porter des fardeaux sur les épaules, quatre-vingt mille pour tailler les pierres dans les montagnes, mais trois mille et six cents préposés aux ouvrages du peuple.

And he made up from among them—seventy thousand, to bear burdens, and eighty thousand to hew in the mountain, —and three thousand and six hundred, as overseers, to keep the people at work.
