2 Chroniques 17

1 Or Josaphat, son fils, régna en sa place, et prévalut contre Israël.

Then Jehoshaphat, his son, reigned in his place. And he grew strong against Israel.

2 Et il établit des légions de soldats dans toutes les villes de Juda qui étaient entourées de murs, et il posta des garnisons dans la terre de Juda et dans les villes d’Ephraïm qu’avait prises Asa, son père.

And he appointed numbers of soldiers in all the cities of Judah that had been fortified with walls. And he placed garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had seized.

3 Et le Seigneur fut avec Josaphat, parce qu’il marcha dans les premières voies de David, son père, et il n’espéra pas dans les Baalim,

And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father, David. And he did not trust in the Baals,

4 Mais dans le Dieu de son père; et il marcha dans ses préceptes, et non selon les péchés d’Israël.

but in the God of his father. And he advanced in his precepts, and not according to the sins of Israel.

5 Et le Seigneur affermit le royaume en sa main, et tout Juda donna des présents à Josaphat; et il lui vint d’immenses richesses et beaucoup de gloire.

And the Lord confirmed the kingdom in his hand. And all of Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat. And innumerable riches were brought to him, and much glory.

6 Et, son cœur ayant pris de la hardiesse à cause des voies du Seigneur, il enleva de Juda même les hauts lieux et les bois sacrés.

And when his heart had taken courage because of the ways of the Lord, he now also took away the high places and the sacred groves from Judah.

7 Or, la troisième année de son règne, il envoya d’entre ses princes, Benhaïl, Obdias, Zacharie, Nathanaël et Michée, pour instruire dans les villes de Juda.

Then, in the third year of his reign, he sent Benhail, and Obadiah, and Zechariah, and Nethanel, and Micaiah, from among his leaders, so that they might teach in the cites of Judah.

8 Et avec eux les Lévites Séméias, Nathanias et Zabadias, Asaël, Sémiramoth et Jonathan, Adonias, Tobias et Thobadonias, et avec eux Elisama et Joran, prêtres.

And with them were the Levites Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah, and also Asahel and Shemiramoth and Jehonathan, and the Levites Adonijah and Tobijah and Tobadonijah. And with them were the priests Elishama and Jehoram.

9 Et ils instruisaient le peuple en Juda, ayant le livre de la loi du Seigneur; ainsi ils parcouraient toutes les villes de Juda, et ils enseignaient le peuple.

And they were teaching the people in Judah, having with them the book of the law of the Lord. And they were traveling through all the cities of Judah, and were instructing the people.

10 C’est pourquoi la crainte du Seigneur se répandit dans tous les royaumes des nations qui étaient aux environs de Juda, et ils n’osaient pas combattre contre Josaphat.

And so, the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands which were around Judah. And they did not dare to make war against Jehoshaphat.

11 Mais les Philistins même apportaient des présents à Josaphat, et un impôt d’argent: les Arabes aussi lui amenaient des troupeaux, sept mille sept cents béliers, et autant de boucs.

Moreover, the Philistines carried gifts to Jehoshaphat, and a tribute in silver. Also, the Arabians brought cattle: seven thousand seven hundred rams, and the same number of he-goats.

12 Josaphat devint donc puissant, et s’éleva jusqu’à un très haut point de grandeur; et il bâtit dans Juda des maisons en forme de tour, et des villes murées.

Therefore, Jehoshaphat increased and was magnified, even on high. And in Judah, he built houses in the likeness of towers, and walled cities.

13 Et il prépara beaucoup d’ouvrages dans les villes de Juda; et il y avait aussi dans Jérusalem des hommes de guerre et vigoureux,

And he prepared many works in the cities of Judah. Also, there were men experienced in warfare in Jerusalem,

14 Dont voici le nombre, selon les maisons et les familles de chacun: Dans Juda, les princes de l’armée étaient, Ednas, le chef, et avec lui étaient trois cent mille hommes très vigoureux.

and this is the number of them, by each of the houses and families. In Judah, the leader of the army was Adnah, the commander; and with him were three hundred thousand very experienced men.

15 Après lui était Johanan, le prince, et avec lui deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes;

After him, Jehohanan was the leader; and with him were two hundred eighty thousand.

16 Après celui-ci, Amasias, fils de Zéchri, consacré au Seigneur, et avec lui deux cent mille hommes braves.

Also after him, there was Amasiah, the son of Zichri, who was consecrated to the Lord; and with him were two hundred thousand strong men.

17 À sa suite venait Eliada, vigoureux dans les combats, et avec lui deux cent mille hommes, tenant un arc et un bouclier.

Following him, there was Eliada, who was experienced in battle; and with him were two hundred thousand, holding bow and shield.

18 Après celui-ci était encore Jozabad, et avec lui cent quatre vingt mille soldats prêts à combattre,

Then too, after him, there was Jehozabad; and with him were one hundred eighty thousand lightly-armed soldiers.

19 Tous ceux-là étaient sous la main du roi, outre les autres qu’il avait placés dans les villes murées, dans tout Juda.

All these were at the hand of the king, aside from the others, whom he had positioned in the walled cities, in all of Judah.
