1 Timothée 1
1 Paul, apôtre de Jésus-Christ, selon le commandement de Dieu notre Sauveur, et du Christ Jésus, notre espérance,
From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the appointment of God, our Savior, and Christ Jesus, our hope.
2 À Timothée, son fils chéri dans la foi. Grâce, miséricorde et paix par Dieu le Père, et par Jésus-Christ Notre Seigneur.
To Timothy, my true child in the faith: May God, the Father, and Christ Jesus, our Lord, bless you, and be merciful to you, and give you peace.
3 Comme je t’en ai prié en partant pour la Macédoine, demeure à Éphèse, afin d’avertir certaines personnes de ne point enseigner une autre doctrine,
I beg you, as I did when I was on my way into Macedonia, to remain at Ephesus; so that you may instruct certain people there not to teach new and strange doctrines,
4 Et de ne point se préoccuper de fables et de généalogies sans fin, qui élèvent des disputes plutôt que l’édifice de Dieu, qui est fondé sur la foi.
nor to devote their attention to legends and interminable genealogies, which tend to give rise to argument rather than to further that divine plan which is revealed in the faith.
5 Car la fin des préceptes est la charité qui vient d’un cœur pur, d’une bonne conscience, et d’une foi non feinte.
The object of all instruction is to call forth that love which comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.
6 Quelques-uns s’en étant détournés, se sont égarés en de vains discours,
And it is because they have not aimed at these things that the attention of certain people has been diverted to unprofitable subjects.
7 Voulant être docteurs de la loi, et ne comprenant ni ce qu’ils disent ni ce qu’ils affirment.
They want to be teachers of the Law, and yet do not understand either the words they use, or the subjects on which they speak so confidently.
8 Or nous savons que la loi est bonne si on en use légitimement:
We know, of course, that the Law is excellent, when used legitimately,
9 En reconnaissant que la loi n’est pas établie pour le juste, mais pour les injustes, les insoumis, les impies, les pécheurs, les scélérats, les profanes, les meurtriers de leur père, et les meurtriers de leur mère, les homicides,
by one who recognizes that laws were not made for good people, but for the lawless and disorderly, for irreligious and wicked people, for those who are irreverent and profane, for those who ill-treat their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
10 Les fornicateurs, les abominables, les voleurs d’hommes, les menteurs, et pour toute autre chose opposée à la saine doctrine,
for the immoral, for perverts, for slave traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever else is opposed to sound Christian teaching –
11 Qui est selon l’Evangile de la gloire du Dieu bienheureux, lequel m’a été confié.
as is taught in the glorious good news of the ever-blessed God, with which I was entrusted.
12 Je rends grâces à celui qui m’a fortifié, au Christ Jésus Notre Seigneur, de ce qu’il m’a estimé fidèle, en m’établissant dans son ministère,
I am thankful to Christ Jesus, our Lord, who has been my strength, for showing that he thought me worthy of trust by appointing me to his ministry,
13 Moi qui était auparavant blasphémateur, persécuteur et outrageux; mais j’ai obtenu miséricorde de Dieu, parce que j’ai agi par ignorance, dans l’incrédulité.
though I once used to blaspheme, and to persecute, and to insult. Yet mercy was shown me, because I acted in ignorance, while still an unbeliever;
14 Et même la grâce de Notre Seigneur a surabondé avec la foi et la dilection qui est dans le Christ Jésus.
and the loving kindness of our Lord was boundless, and filled me with that faith and love which come from union with Christ Jesus.
15 C’est une vérité certaine et digne d’être entièrement reçue, que le Christ Jésus est venu en ce monde pour sauver les pécheurs, entre lesquels je suis le premier.
How true the saying is, and worthy of the fullest acceptance, that ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’! And there is no greater sinner than I!
16 Mais aussi j’ai obtenu miséricorde, afin qu’en moi, le premier, le Christ Jésus montrât toute sa patience, en sorte que je servisse d’exemple pour ceux qui croiront en lui pour la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
Yet mercy was shown me for the express purpose that Christ Jesus might exhibit in my case, beyond all others, his exhaustless patience, as an example for those who were afterward to believe on him and attain eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
17 Au roi des siècles, immortel, invisible, au seul Dieu, honneur et gloire dans les siècles des siècles. Amen. (aiōn g165)
To the eternal King, ever-living, invisible, the one God, be ascribed honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
18 Voici la recommandation que je te fais, mon fils Timothée, c’est que d’après les prophéties faites de toi autrefois, tu combattes, en les accomplissant, le bon combat;
This, then, is the charge that I lay on you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with what was predicted of you – Fight the good fight in the spirit of those predictions,
19 Conservant la foi et la bonne conscience que quelques-uns ont repoussée, et ils ont fait naufrage dans la foi;
with faith, and with a clear conscience; and it is because they have thrust this aside, that, as regards the faith, some have wrecked their lives.
20 De ce nombre sont Hyménée et Alexandre, que j’ai livrés à Satan pour qu’ils apprennent à ne point blasphémer.
Hymenaeus and Alexander are instances – the men whom I delivered over to Satan so that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
