1 Samuel 1

1 Il y eut un homme de Ramathaïmsophim, de la montagne d’Ephraïm, et son nom était Elcana, fils de Jéroam, fils d’Eliu, fils de Thohu, fils de Suph: il était Ephrathéen;

There was a man named Elkanah who lived in Ramah [town] in the hilly area where [the tribe of] Ephraim lived. His father was Jeroham, his grandfather was Elihu, and his great-grandfather was Tohu. He belonged to the Zuph clan.

2 Et il avait deux femmes; le nom d’une était Anne, et le nom de la seconde Phénenna. Or Phénenna eut des fils, mais Anne n’avait pas d’enfants.

He had two wives: Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had several children, but Hannah had no children.

3 Et cet homme montait de sa ville aux jours prescrits, pour adorer et sacrifier au Seigneur des armées à Silo. Or il y avait là les deux fils d’Héli, Ophni et Phinéès, prêtres du Seigneur.

Once every year Elkanah went up [with his family] from Ramah to Shiloh [city]. He went there to worship Yahweh, [the commander] of the armies [of angels], and to offer sacrifices to him. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, [helped their father to do the work as] priests of Yahweh there.

4 Vint donc le jour, et Elcana offrit un sacrifice, et il donna des portions à Phénenna, sa femme, et à tous ses fils et à ses filles;

Each time Elkanah offered sacrifices there, he gave some of the meat to Peninnah and some to each of her sons and daughters.

5 Mais à Anne il donna une seule portion avec tristesse, parce qu’il chérissait Anne. Or, le Seigneur l’avait frappée de stérilité.

But even though he loved Hannah very much, he gave her only one special amount of meat because Yahweh had not permitted her to give birth to any children.

6 Sa rivale l’affligeait aussi et la tourmentait violemment, au point de lui reprocher que le Seigneur l’avait frappée de stérilité.

And his other wife, Peninnah, would ridicule Hannah to make her feel miserable, because Yahweh had not allowed her to bear children.

7 C’est ainsi qu’elle faisait chaque année, lorsque, le temps revenant, ils montaient au temple du Seigneur, et c’est ainsi qu’elle la provoquait. Or, Anne pleurait et ne prenait pas de nourriture.

This happened every year. When they went up to the temple of Yahweh [at Shiloh], Peninnah ridiculed Hannah so much that Hannah cried and would not eat.

8 Elcana, son mari, lui dit donc: Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu? d’où vient que tu ne manges pas? et pour quel motif ton cœur est-il affligé? Est-ce que moi je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils?

Then Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, (why are you crying?/please quit crying!) [RHQ] (Why are you not eating?/Please eat something!) [RHQ] Why are you so upset/sad? You have me; is that not more important to you than if you had ten sons? (OR, I [love you] more than your sons [would love you], even if you had ten sons.)”

9 Mais Anne se leva après qu’elle eut mangé et bu à Silo. Et, Héli, le prêtre, étant assis sur son mari, lui dit donc: Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu? d où vient que tu ne manges pas? et pour quel motif ton cœur est-il affligé? Est-ce que moi je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils?

One year, after they had finished eating and drinking at Shiloh, Hannah stood up [to pray]. Eli the priest was nearby, sitting on a chair by the doorway of the sacred tent of Yahweh.

10 Mais Anne se leva après qu’elle eut mangé et bu à Silo. Et, Héli, le prêtre, étant assis sur son siège devant la porte du temple du Seigneur,

Hannah was very distressed, and she cried very sorrowfully as she prayed to Yahweh.

11 Anne, qui avait le cœur dans l’amertume, adressa des prières au Seigneur, pleurant abondamment,

She made a vow saying, “O Almighty Commander of the armies of angels, if you will look at me and see how miserable I am, and think about me and allow me to give birth to a son, then I will dedicate him to you [to serve you] for the rest of his life. And [to show that he is dedicated to you], (no one will ever [be allowed to] cut his hair/his hair will never be cut).”

12 Et elle voua un vœu, disant: Seigneur des armées, si abaissant votre regard, vous voyez l’affliction de votre servante, si vous vous souvenez de moi; si vous n’avez pas oublié votre servante, et que vous donniez à votre esclave un enfant mâle, je le donnerai au Seigneur pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne montera jamais sur sa tête.

As she was praying like that to Yahweh, Eli the priest saw Hannah’s lips [moving as she was praying].

13 Or, il arriva, que, comme elle multipliait ses prières devant le Seigneur, Héli observait sa bouche.

But Hannah was only praying silently; she was not making any sound. So Eli thought that she was drunk.

14 Mais Anne parlait en son cœur, ses lèvres seules étaient en mouvement, et sa voix n’était pas du tout entendue. Héli donc la jugea ivre,

He said to her, “How long will you continue to get drunk [RHQ]? (Throw away your wine/Quit drinking wine)!”

15 Et il lui dit: Jusqu’à quand seras-tu ivre? Laisse reposer quelque temps le vin qui t’enivre.

Hannah replied, “Sir, I am not drunk! I have not been drinking wine or any other alcoholic drink. I feel very distressed and I have been telling Yahweh about how I feel.

16 Anne répondant: Nullement, dit-elle, mon seigneur; car je suis une femme très malheureuse; le vin et tout ce qui peut enivrer, je n’en ai pas bu; mais j’ai répandu mon âme en la présence du Seigneur.

Do not think that I am a worthless/wicked woman! I have been praying like this because I am very distressed [DOU].”

17 Ne prenez pas votre servante pour une des filles de Bélial; parce que c’est dans l’excès de ma douleur et de mon affliction que j’ai parlé jusqu’à présent.

Eli replied, “I wish/desire that things will go well for you. I desire that God, the one we Israeli people [worship], will give you what you requested from him.”

18 Alors Héli lui répliqua: Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël t’accorde la demande que tu lui as faite.

She replied, “I want you to think highly/well about me.” Then she returned [to her family] and after she ate something, her face no longer looked sad.

19 Et Anne répondit: Plût à Dieu que votre servante trouvât grâce à vos yeux! Et la femme s’en alla en son chemin; elle mangea, et ses traits n’éprouvèrent plus aucun changement.

Early the next morning, Elkanah and his family got up and worshiped Yahweh [again], and then they returned to their home at Ramah. Elkanah (slept with/had sex with) Hannah. Then Yahweh answered her prayer,

20 Après cela, ils se levèrent le matin, et ils adorèrent devant le Seigneur; puis ils s’en retournèrent et vinrent dans leur maison à Ramatha. Or, Elcana connut Anne sa femme, et le Seigneur se souvint d’elle.

and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, [which sounds like the words in the Hebrew language that mean ‘heard by God’], because she said “Yahweh [heard me when] I requested from him [a son].”

21 Et, il arriva qu’après une révolution de jours, Anne conçut, puis enfanta un fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Samuel, parce qu’elle l’avait demandé au Seigneur.

The following year, Elkanah again went up [to Shiloh] with his family to make the kind of sacrifice he made each year, and also to give a special offering to God that he had promised [to give him previously].

22 Or, Elcana, son mari, monta au temple, ainsi que toute sa maison, pour immoler au Seigneur l’hostie solennelle, et s’acquitter de son vœu;

But Hannah did not go [with them]. She said to her husband, “After I have weaned the baby, I will take him [to Shiloh and present him] to Yahweh, and he will stay there for the rest of his life.”

23 Mais Anne n’y monta point; car elle dit à son mari: Je n’irai pas, jusqu’à ce que l’enfant soit sevré, et que je le conduise, afin qu’il paraisse en la présence du Seigneur, et qu’il y demeure perpétuellement.

Elkanah said, “Do what seems the best to you. Stay here until you have weaned him. What I desire is that Yahweh will [enable you to] do what you have promised.” So Hannah stayed at home and nursed her son until she weaned him.

24 Et Elcana, son mari, lui répondit: Fais ce qui le semble bon, et demeure jusqu’à ce que tu le sèvres; et je prie pour que le Seigneur accomplisse sa parole. Sa femme demeura donc, et elle allaita son fils, jusqu’à ce qu’elle le sevrât.

After she weaned him, even though Samuel was very young, she took him to the temple/house of Yahweh at Shiloh. [To offer as a sacrifice], she took along a three-year-old bull, [a sack containing] (20 pounds/9 kg.) of flour, and a container of wine.

25 Et elle l’amena avec elle, après qu’elle l’eut sevré, en prenant trois veaux, trois boisseaux de farine et une cruche de vin; ainsi elle l’amena dans la maison du Seigneur à Silo. Or, l’enfant était encore un tout petit enfant.

After the priest had slaughtered the bull [and offered it to Yahweh on the altar], Hannah and Elkanah brought the boy to Eli.

26 Et ils immolèrent le veau, et présentèrent l’enfant à Héli.

Then Hannah said to him, “Sir, (Do you remember me?/I solemnly affirm), I am the woman who prayed as I stood here beside you [several years ago].

27 Et Anne dit: Je vous conjure, mon seigneur, votre âme vit, seigneur! c’est moi qui suis cette femme qui me suis tenue devant vous ici, priant le Seigneur.

I prayed that Yahweh would enable me to give birth to a child, and this is the child whom I requested Yahweh to give me.

28 C’est pour cet enfant que j’ai prié, et le Seigneur m’a accordé ma demande que je lui ai faite. C’est pour cela aussi que moi je l’ai donné au Seigneur, pour tous les jours pour lesquels il aura été donné au Seigneur. Ainsi ils adorèrent là le Seigneur, et Anne pria et dit:

So now I am presenting him to Yahweh. He will belong to Yahweh as long as he lives.” Then Elkanah [and his family] worshiped Yahweh there.
