1 Samuel 9
1 Or, il était un homme de la tribu de Benjamin nommé Cis, fils d’Abiel, fils de Séror, fils de Béchorath, fils d’Aphia, fils d’un homme de Jémini, courageux et robuste.
Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name, was Kish—son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjamite, —a mighty man of valour;
2 Et il avait un fils du nom de Saül, distingué et bon; et il n’était pas d’homme parmi les enfants d’Israël meilleur que lui; de l’épaule et de la tête il surpassait tout le peuple.
and, he, had a son, whose name, was Saul, a choice young man and of noble appearance, and there was not a man of the sons of Israel, more noble than he, —from his shoulders and upwards, was he taller than any of the people.
3 Or les ânesses de Cis, père de Saül, s’étaient perdues; et Cis dit à Saül, son fils: Prends avec toi un des serviteurs, et, te levant, va, et cherche les ânesses. Ceux-ci ayant passé par la montagne d’Ephraïm,
Now there had gone astray asses belonging to Kish, Saul’s father, —so Kish said unto Saul his son—I pray thee, take with thee one of the young men, and arise—go, seek the asses.
4 Et par la terre de Salisa, et ne les ayant point trouvées, passèrent aussi par la terre de Salim, et elles n’y étaient pas; et aussi par la terre de Jémini, et ils ne les rencontrèrent pas du tout.
And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not, —then passed they through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there, then passed he through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
5 Mais lorsqu’ils furent venus dans la terre de Suph, Saül dit au serviteur qui était avec lui: Viens, et retournons-nous-en, de peur que mon père n’ait laissé les ânesses, et qu’il ne soit inquiet sur nous.
They, had come into the land of Zuph when, Saul, said to his young man who was with him, Come! and let us return; lest my father leave off [caring] for the asses, and be concerned for us.
6 Le serviteur lui dit: Voilà qu’il y a un homme de Dieu dans cette ville, homme célèbre, tout ce qu’il dit arrive certainement. Maintenant donc allons là; peut-être nous renseignera-t-il sur la route, à cause de laquelle nous sommes venus.
And he said to him: Lo! I pray thee, a man of God, [liveth] in this city, and, the man, is held in honour, all that he saith, surely cometh to pass. Now, let us go thither; peradventure he may tell us our way, whereon we should have gone.
7 Alors Saül dit à son serviteur: Eh bien, nous irons: que porterons-nous à l’homme de Dieu? Le pain a manqué dans nos panetières, nous n’avons pas de présent pour donner à l’homme de Dieu, ni quelque autre chose que ce soit.
Then said Saul to his young man: Behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man, for, the bread, hath failed from our sacks, and, present, there is none to bring to the man of God, —what is there with us?
8 Le serviteur répondit de nouveau à Saül, et dit: Voici que se trouve dans ma main la quatrième partie d’un statère d’argent, donnons-la à l’homme de Dieu, afin qu’il nous indique notre route.
And the young man again answered Saul, and said—Lo! there is found in my hand, the fourth part of a shekel of silver, —which thou canst give to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.
9 (Autrefois dans Israël ainsi parlaient tous ceux qui allaient consulter Dieu: Venez, et allons au voyant; car celui qui est appelé prophète aujourd’hui, se nommait autrefois voyant.)
Beforetime, in Israel, thus, said a man when he went to enquire of God, Come and let us go as far as the seer, —for, the prophet of to-day, used to be called, beforetime, the seer.
10 Alors Saül dit à son serviteur: Ta parole est excellente. Viens, allons. Et ils allèrent dans la ville, dans laquelle était l’homme de Dieu.
And Saul said unto his young man, Good, is thy word, come! let us go! So they went unto the city, where the man of God was.
11 Et lorsqu’ils montaient la pente de la ville, ils trouvèrent des jeunes filles, qui sortaient pour puiser de l’eau, et ils leur demandèrent: Est-il ici le voyant?
They were going up the ascent of the city, when they found young women, coming out to draw water, —so they said unto these, Is, the seer, in this place?
12 Celles-ci répondant, leur dirent: Il est ici: le voici devant toi, hâte-toi maintenant; car il est venu aujourd’hui dans la ville, parce qu’il y a aujourd’hui un sacrifice pour le peuple sur le haut lieu.
And the young women answered them and said: He is, lo! before you now, even as, to-day, hath he entered the city, for the people have a sacrifice, to-day, in the high place.
13 Entrant dans la ville, vous le trouverez aussitôt, avant qu’il monte le haut lieu pour manger; car le peuple ne doit pas manger, jusqu à ce qu’il vienne, parce que c’est lui qui bénit l’hostie, et que c’est après cela que mangent ceux qui ont été appelés. Montez donc maintenant, parce qu’aujourd’hui vous le trouverez.
As ye enter the city, so, shall ye surely find him, ere yet he shall go up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he hath come, for, he, doth bless the sacrifice, after that, will they eat who have been bidden. Now, therefore, go up, for, about this very time, shall ye surely find him.
14 Et ils montèrent à la ville. Et comme ils marchaient au milieu de la ville, parut Samuel, sortant au-devant d’eux, pour monter sur le haut lieu.
So they went up into the city. As they were entering into the midst of the city, lo! Samuel, coming out over against them, to ascend the high place.
15 Or, le Seigneur avait ouvert l’oreille de Samuel, un jour avant que n’arrivât Saül, disant:
Now, Yahweh, had unveiled the ear of Samuel, —one day before Saul came, saying:
16 À cette heure même qui est maintenant, demain j’enverrai vers toi un homme de la terre de Benjamin, et tu l’oindras chef sur mon peuple d’Israël; et il sauvera mon peuple de la main des Philistins, parce que j’ai regardé mon peuple; car leur clameur est venue jusqu’à moi.
About this time to-morrow, will I send unto thee, a man out of the land of Benjamin, whom thou shalt anoint, to be leader over my people Israel, and he shall save my people, out of the hand of the Philistines, —for I have looked upon the oppression, because their outcry hath come in unto me.
17 Et lorsque Samuel eut regardé Saül, le Seigneur lui dit: Voici l’homme dont je t’avais parlé, c’est celui-là qui régnera sur mon peuple.
And, when, Samuel, beheld Saul, Yahweh, answered him, Lo! the man, of whom I said unto thee, Here, is one shall control my people.
18 Or Saül s’approcha de Samuel au milieu de la porte, et dit: Indique-moi, je te prie, où est la maison du voyant.
And Saul drew near unto Samuel, in the midst of the gate, —and said—I pray thee, do tell me, where is the house of the seer?
19 Et Samuel répondit à Saül, disant: C’est moi qui suis le voyant: monte devant moi sur le haut lieu, afin que vous mangiez avec moi aujourd’hui, et je t’enverrai le matin; et tout ce qui est dans ton cœur, je te l’expliquerai.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said—I, am, the seer! Go up before me, to the high place, so shall ye eat with me, to-day, —and I will let thee go in the morning, and, all that is in thy heart, will I tell thee.
20 Et quant aux ânesses que tu as perdues, il y a trois jours, ne sois pas inquiet, parce qu’elles sont retrouvées. Et à qui seront toutes les meilleures choses d’Israël? N’est-ce pas à toi et à toute la maison de ton père?
And, as for the asses that went astray from thee three days ago, do not regard them, for they are found, —but to whom belongeth all that is desirable in Israel? is it not to thee, and to all the house of thy father?
21 Mais Saül répondant, dit: Est-ce que je ne suis pas, moi, fils de Jémini, de la plus petite tribu d’Israël, et ma parenté n’est-elle pas la dernière entre toutes les familles de la tribu de Benjamin? Pourquoi donc m’avez-vous tenu ce discours?
Then answered Saul, and said—Am not I, a man of Benjamin, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and [is not], my family, the poorest of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Wherefore, then, hast thou spoken unto me of such a thing as this?
22 C’est pourquoi Samuel prenant Saül et son serviteur, les introduisit dans la salle à manger, et leur donna place à la tête de ceux qui avaient été invités; car ils étaient environ trente personnes.
And Samuel took Saul and his young man, and brought them into the guest-chamber, —and gave them a place at the head of them who were bidden, they being about thirty persons.
23 Et il dit au cuisinier: Donne la portion, que je t’ai donnée, et que je t’ai commandé de mettre à part auprès de toi.
And Samuel said to the cook, Set on the portion that I gave thee, —of which I said unto thee, Put it by thee.
24 Or, le cuisinier prit une épaule, et la plaça devant Saül. Et Samuel dit: Voici ce qui est resté, mets-le devant toi, et mange, parce que c’est à dessein qu’on l’a conservé pour toi, quand j’ai invité le peuple. Et Saül mangea avec Samuel en ce jour-là.
And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and placed it before Saul, and said—Lo! the part reserved! Set it before thee [and] eat, for, unto the time appointed, hath it been kept for thee, since the time that I said, The people, have I bidden. So Saul did eat with Samuel, on that day.
25 Après cela, ils descendirent du haut lieu dans la ville, et Samuel parla avec Saül sur la terrasse, et il prépara un lit à Saül, et Saül dormit.
And, when they had come down from the high place into the city, he spread a couch for Saul upon the house-top, and he lay down.
26 Lorsque le matin, ils se furent levés, et que déjà il faisait jour, Samuel appela Saül sur la terrasse, disant: Lève-toi et je, t’enverrai. Et Saül se leva, et ils} sortirent tous deux, c’est-à-dire lui-même et Samuel.
And it came to pass, at the uprisings of the dawn, that Samuel called unto Saul on the house-top, saying, Arise! that I may send thee away. So Saul arose, and they two, he and Samuel, went forth abroad.
27 Et lorsqu’ils descendaient à l’extrémité de la ville, Samuel dit à Saül: Dis à ton serviteur qu’il nous précède, et qu’il passe outre; mais toi, demeure un peu, afin que je te révèle la parole de Dieu.
As they were going down the end of the city, Samuel, said unto Saul—Bid the young man, that he pass on before us, (and he passed on) but, thou, stand still where thou art, that I may let thee hear the word of God.
