1 Samuel 8

1 Or, il arriva que, lorsque Samuel fut devenu vieux, il établit ses fils juges d’Israël.

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 Le nom de son fils premier-né fut Joël, et le nom du second, Abia; ils étaient juges à Bersabée

Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer-sheba.

3 Mais ses fils ne marchèrent pas dans ses voies; mais ils se portèrent à l’avarice, reçurent des présents et ils pervertirent le jugement.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 Tous les anciens d’Israël, s’étant donc assemblés, vinrent vers Samuel à Ramatha,

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah.

5 Et lui dirent: Voilà que vous êtes devenu vieux, et vos fils ne marchent pas dans vos voies; établissez sur nous un roi, afin qu’il nous juge, comme en ont toutes les nations.

And they said unto him: 'Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.'

6 Ce discours déplut à Samuel, parce qu’ils avaient dit: Donnez-nous un roi, afin qu’il nous juge. Et Samuel adressa des prières au Seigneur.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said: 'Give us a king to judge us.' And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

7 Mais le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Ecoute la voix du peuple en tout ce qu’ils te disent; car ce n’est pas toi qu’ils ont rejeté, mais moi, afin que je ne règne pas sur eux.

And the LORD said unto Samuel: 'Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I should not be king over them.

8 Selon toutes leurs œuvres qu’ils ont faites depuis le jour que je les ai retirés de l’Égypte, jusqu’à ce jour; comme ils m’ont abandonné et ont servi des dieux étrangers, ainsi ils te font à toi aussi.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken Me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9 Maintenant donc écoute leur voix; cependant avertis-les et dis-leur d’avance, le droit du roi, qui doit régner sur eux.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice; howbeit thou shalt earnestly forewarn them, and shalt declare unto them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.'

10 C’est pourquoi Samuel dit toutes ces paroles au peuple, qui lui avait demandé un roi,

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

11 Et il ajouta: Voici le droit du roi, qui doit vous gouverner: Il prendra vos enfants, les emploiera à ses chars, et s’en fera des cavaliers, et des avant-coureurs de ses quadriges,

And he said: 'This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots.

12 Et il les établira ses tribuns, ses centurions, les laboureurs de ses champs, les moissonneurs de ses grains, et les forgeurs de ses armes et de ses chariots.

And he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

13 Et de vos filles aussi il fera ses parfumeuses, ses cuisinières et ses boulangères.

And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 Vos champs mêmes, vos vignes et vos plants d’oliviers les meilleurs, il les prendra et les donnera à ses serviteurs.

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15 Mais de plus il lèvera la dîme de vos grains, et des revenus de vos vignes, pour donnera ses eunuques et à ses serviteurs.

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 Il enlèvera aussi vos serviteurs, vos servantes, l’élite de vos jeunes gens, et vos ânes, et il les emploiera à des travaux pour lui.

And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 Vos troupeaux mêmes, il en lèvera la dîme, et vous vous serez ses serviteurs.

He will take the tenth of your flocks; and ye shall be his servants.

18 Et vous crierez, en ce jour-là, à cause de votre roi, que vous vous serez choisi: et le Seigneur ne vous exaucera point, en ce jour-là, parce que vous avez demandé pour vous un roi.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.'

19 Or le peuple ne voulut pas entendre la voix de Samuel; mais ils dirent: Point du tout; car il y aura un roi sur nous,

But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said: 'Nay; but there shall be a king over us;

20 Et nous serons, nous aussi comme toutes les nations: et notre roi nous jugera, et il sortira devant nous, et il combattra dans nos guerres pour nous.

that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.'

21 Et Samuel entendit toutes les paroles du peuple, et il les dit aux oreilles du Seigneur.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he spoke them in the ears of the LORD.

22 Mais le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Ecoute leur voix, et établis sur eux un roi. Samuel dit donc aux hommes d’Israël: Que chacun s’en aille en sa ville.

And the LORD said to Samuel: 'Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king.' And Samuel said unto the men of Israel: 'Go ye every man unto his city.'
