1 Samuel 7

1 Les hommes de Cariathiarim vinrent donc, ramenèrent l’arche du Seigneur, et la transportèrent dans la maison d’Abinadad à Gabaa: mais ils sanctifièrent Eléazar, son fils, afin qu’il gardât l’arche du Seigneur.

Then the men of Kiriath-jearim arrived, and they led away the ark of the Lord. And they brought it into the house of Abinadab, in Gibeah. Then they sanctified Eleazar, his son, so that he might care for the ark of the Lord.

2 Et il arriva que depuis le jour où l’arche du Seigneur demeura à Cariathiarim, les jours se multiplièrent (car c’était déjà la vingtième année); et toute la maison d’Israël se reposa à l’abri du Seigneur.

And it happened that, from that day, the ark of the Lord remained in Kiriath-jearim. And the days were multiplied (for it was now the twentieth year) and all the house of Israel rested, following the Lord.

3 Et Samuel s’adressa à toute la maison d’Israël, disant: Si c’est en tout votre cœur que vous revenez au Seigneur, ôtez d’au milieu de vous les dieux étrangers, les Baalim et les Astaroth, et préparez vos cœurs pour le Seigneur, ne servez que lui, et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins.

Then Samuel spoke to the entire house of Israel, saying: “If you would return to the Lord with your whole heart, take away strange gods from among you, the Baals and Ashtaroth, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve him alone. And he will rescue you from the hand of the Philistines.”

4 Les enfants d’Israël enlevèrent donc les Baalim et les Astaroth, et ne servirent que le Seigneur.

Therefore, the sons of Israel took away the Baals and Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord alone.

5 Or Samuel dit: Rassemblez tout Israël à Masphath, afin que je prie pour vous le Seigneur.

And Samuel said, “Gather all of Israel at Mizpah, so that I may pray for you to the Lord.”

6 Et ils s’assemblèrent à Masphath; ils puisèrent de l’eau, et la répandirent en la présence du Seigneur; ils jeûnèrent aussi en ce jour, et ils dirent là: Nous avons péché contre le Seigneur. Et Samuel jugea les enfants d’Israël à Masphath.

And they convened at Mizpah. And they drew water, and they poured it out in the sight of the Lord. And on that day they fasted, and in that place they said, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah.

7 Cependant les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d’Israël s’étaient assemblés à Masphath, et les satrapes des Philistins montèrent vers Israël. Ce qu’ayant appris les enfants d’Israël, ils craignirent à l’aspect des Philistins.

And the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah. And the princes of the Philistines ascended against Israel. And when the sons of Israel had heard this, they were afraid before the face of the Philistines.

8 Et ils dirent à Samuel: Ne cessez point de crier pour nous vers le Seigneur notre Dieu, afin qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins.

And they said to Samuel, “May you not cease to cry out to the Lord our God on our behalf, so that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

9 Samuel prit donc un agneau encore à la mamelle, et l’offrit tout entier en holocauste au Seigneur, et Samuel cria vers le Seigneur pour Israël, et le Seigneur l’exauça.

Then Samuel took one suckling lamb, and he offered it whole, as a holocaust to the Lord. And Samuel cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel, and the Lord heeded him.

10 Or, il arriva que, tandis que Samuel offrait l’holocauste, les Philistins engagèrent la bataille contre Israël; mais le Seigneur tonna avec un grand éclat ce jour-là sur les Philistins, et les épouvanta, et ils furent taillés en pièces à la face d’Israël.

Then it happened that, while Samuel was offering the holocaust, the Philistines began the battle against Israel. But the Lord thundered with a great crash, on that day, over the Philistines, and he terrified them, and they were cut down before the face of Israel.

11 Et les hommes d’Israël, étant sortis de Masphath, poursuivirent les Philistins, et ils les battirent jusqu’au lieu qui était au-dessous de Bethchar.

And the men of Israel, departing from Mizpah, pursued the Philistines, and they struck them down as far as the place which was below Bethcar.

12 Or, Samuel prit une pierre, et la posa entre Masphath et entre Sen; et il appela ce lieu du nom de Pierre du secours, et il dit: C’est jusqu’ici que le Seigneur nous a secourus.

Then Samuel took a single stone, and he placed it between Mizpah and Shen. And he called the name of this place: The Stone of Assistance. And he said, “For in this place the Lord gave assistance to us.”

13 Ainsi, les Philistins furent humiliés, et ils n’entreprirent plus de venir sur les frontières d’Israël. C’est pourquoi la main du Seigneur fut sur les Philistins, pendant tous les jours de Samuel.

And the Philistines were humbled, and they no longer drew near, so that they might enter into the borders of Israel. And so, the hand of the Lord was over the Philistines during all the days of Samuel.

14 Et les villes que les Philistins avaient enlevées à Israël, furent rendues à Israël, depuis Accaron jusqu’à Geth, de même que leurs confins: ainsi il délivra Israël de la main des Philistins; et la paix était entre Israël et l’Amorrhéen.

And the cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron as far as Gath, with their borders. And he freed Israel from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

15 Samuel jugeait aussi Israël pendant tous les jours de sa vie;

And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16 Et il s’en allait chaque année parcourant Béthel, Galgala et Masphath, et il jugeait Israël dans les susdits lieux.

And he went each year, traveling around to Bethel, and to Gilgal, and to Mizpah, and he judged Israel in the above-stated places.

17 Il retournait ensuite à Ramatha, car là, était sa maison, et là il jugeait Israël; il bâtit là aussi un autel au Seigneur.

And he returned to Ramah. For his house was there, and he judged Israel there. And then he built an altar to the Lord there.
