1 Samuel 23

1 Et on apporta une nouvelle à David en disant: Voilà que les Philistins attaquent Céila, et qu’ils pillent les aires.

And they told David, saying: Behold the Philistines fight against Ceila, and they rob the barns.

2 David donc consulta le Seigneur, disant: Est-ce que j’irai et que je battrai ces Philistins? Et le Seigneur répondit à David: Va, et tu battras les Philistins, et tu sauveras Céila.

Therefore David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said to David: Go, and thou shalt smite the Philistines, and shalt save Ceila.

3 Et les hommes qui étaient avec David lui dirent: Voilà que nous, étant en Judée, nous craignons, combien plus, si nous allons à Céila contre les troupes des Philistins?

And the men that were with David, said to him: Behold we are in fear here in Judea, how much more if we go to Ceila against the hands of the Philistines?

4 De nouveau donc David consulta le Seigneur, qui lui répondit: Lève-toi et va à Céila; car c’est moi qui livrerai les Philistins à ta main.

Therefore David consulted the Lord again. And he answered and said to him: Arise, and go to Ceila: for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

5 David donc s’en alla et ses hommes à Céila, et il combattit contre les Philistins, et il amena leurs bestiaux, et il frappa ses ennemis d’une grande plaie: ainsi David sauva les habitants de Céila.

David therefore, and his men, went to Ceila, and fought against the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and made a great slaughter of them: and David saved the inhabitants of Ceila.

6 Or, dans le temps qu’Abiathar, fils d’Achimélech, s’enfuyait vers David à Céila, il était descendu ayant un éphod avec lui.

Now at that time, when Abiathar the son of Achimelech fled to David to Ceila, he came down having an ephod with him.

7 Cependant on annonça à Saül que David était venu à Céila, et Saül dit: Dieu l’a livré en mes mains, et il est enfermé, étant entré dans une ville, où il y a des portes et des serrures.

And it was told Saul that David was come to Ceila: and Saul said: The Lord hath delivered him into my hands, and he is shut up, being come into a city, that hath gates and bars.

8 Saül donc ordonna à tout le peuple de descendre au combat à Céila, et d’assiéger David et ses hommes.

And Saul commanded all the people to go down to fight against Ceila, and to besiege David, and his men.

9 Lorsque David eut su que Saül préparait secrètement sa perte, il dit à Abiathar, le prêtre: Revêtez-vous de l’éphod.

Now when David understood, that Saul secretly prepared evil against him, he said to Abiathar the priest: Bring hither the ephod.

10 Et David dit: Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, votre serviteur a entendu dire que Saül se dispose à venir à Céila, pour détruire la ville à cause de moi;

And David said: O Lord God of Israel, thy servant hath heard a report, that Saul designeth to come to Ceila, to destroy the city for my sake:

11 Est-ce que les hommes de Céila me livreront en ses mains? et Saül descendra-t-il, comme votre serviteur l’a appris? Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, indiquez-le à votre serviteur. Et le Seigneur répondit: Il descendra.

Will the men of Ceila deliver me into his hands? and will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O Lord God of Israel, tell thy servant. And the Lord said: He will come down.

12 David dit encore: Est-ce que les hommes de Céila me livreront, moi et les hommes qui sont avec moi aux mains de Saül? Et le Seigneur répondit: Ils vous livreront.

And David said: Will the men of Ceila deliver me, and my men, into the hands of Saul? And the Lord said: They will deliver thee up.

13 David donc se leva, ainsi que ses hommes, au nombre d’environ six cents, et sortis de Céila, ils erraient çà et là, incertains; et l’on annonça à Saül que David s’était enfui de Céila et s’était sauvé: pour cette raison, Saül feignit de ne pas sortir.

Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose, and departing from Ceila, wandered up and down uncertain where they should stay: and it was told Saul that David was fled from Ceila, and had escaped: wherefore he forbore to go out.

14 Or, David se tenait dans le désert, dans des lieux très sûrs, et il demeura sur la montagne de la solitude de Ziph, montagne ombragée: Saül le cherchait cependant tous les jours; et Dieu ne le livra pas en ses mains.

But David abode in the desert in strong holds, and he remained in a mountain of the desert of Ziph, in a woody hill. And Saul sought him always: but the Lord delivered him not into his hands.

15 Et David s’aperçut que Saül était sorti pour chercher son âme. Mais David était dans le désert de Ziph, dans la forêt.

And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life. And David was in the desert of Ziph, in a wood.

16 Et Jonathas, fils de Saül, se leva, et s’en alla vers David dans la forêt et fortifia ses mains en Dieu, et lui dit:

And Jonathan the son of Saul arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hands in God: and he said to him:

17 Ne crains point; car la main de mon père Saül même ne te trouvera pas; et tu régneras sur Israël, et moi je serai le second après toi; mais mon père même sait cela.

Fear not: for the hand of my father Saul shall not find thee, and thou shalt reign over Israel, and I shall be next to thee, yea, and my father knoweth this.

18 Ils firent donc l’un et l’autre alliance devant le Seigneur; et David demeura dans la forêt; mais Jonathas retourna en sa maison.

And the two made a covenant before the Lord: and David abode in the wood: but Jonathan returned to his house.

19 Cependant les Ziphéens montèrent vers Saül à Gabaa, disant: Ne voilà-t-il pas que David est caché parmi nous dans les lieux les plus sûrs de la forêt, sur la colline d’Hachila, qui est à la droite du désert.

And the Ziphites went up to Saul in Gabaa, saying: Lo, doth not David lie hid with us in the strong holds of the wood, in mount Hachila, which is on the right hand of the desert.

20 Maintenant donc, comme votre âme a désiré que vous descendiez, descendez; mais ce sera à nous à le livrer aux mains du roi.

Now therefore come down, as thy soul hath desired to come down: and it shall be our business to deliver him into the king’s hands.

21 Et Saül répondit: Bénis soyez-vous du Seigneur, parce que vous avez été affligés de mon sort.

And Saul said: Blessed be ye of the Lord, for you have pitied my case.

22 Allez donc, je vous prie, préparez tout avec une grande diligence, agissez avec beaucoup de soin, et considérez le lieu où est son pied, ou qui l’aura vu; car il pense de moi, que je lui tends adroitement des pièges.

Go therefore, I pray you, and use all diligence, and curiously inquire, and consider the place where his foot is, and who hath seen him there: for he thinketh of me, that I lie craftily in wait for him.

23 Considérez et voyez tous les lieux secrets dans lesquels il se cache, puis revenez vers moi avec quelque chose de certain, afin que j’aille avec vous. Quand il se serait enfoncé dans la terre, je le chercherai parmi tous les mille de Juda.

Consider and see all his lurking holes, wherein he is bid, and return to me with the certainty of the thing, that I may go with you. And if be should even go down into the earth to hide himself, I will search him out in all the thousands of Juda.

24 Ainsi les Ziphéens se levant s’en allèrent à Ziph avant Saül: or, David et ses hommes étaient dans le désert de Maon, dans les plaines, à la droite de Jésimon.

And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul: and David and his men were in the desert of Maon, in the plain at the right hand of Jesimon.

25 Saül alla donc ainsi que ses gens pour le chercher; et on l’annonça à David, et aussitôt il descendit vers le rocher, et il demeurait dans le désert de Maon; ce qu’ayant appris Saül, il poursuivit David dans le désert de Maon.

Then Saul and his men went to seek him: and it was told David, and forthwith he went down to the rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon: and when Saul had heard of it he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

26 Et Saül côtoyait la montagne d’un côté; mais David et ses hommes côtoyaient la montagne de l’autre. Or, David désespérait de pouvoir se sauver de la face de Saül; car Saül et ses hommes environnaient en forme de couronne David et ses hommes, pour les prendre.

And Saul went on this side of the mountain: and David and his men were on the other side of the mountain: and David despaired of being able to escape from the face of Saul: and Saul and his men encompassed David and his men round about to take them.

27 Et un messager vint vers Saül, disant: Hâtez-vous, et venez, parce que les Philistins se sont jetés sur le pays.

And a messenger came to Saul, saying: Make haste to come, for the Philistines have poured in themselves upon the land.

28 Saül retourna donc, cessant de poursuivre David, et il marcha à la rencontre des Philistins; c’est pour cela qu’on appela ce lieu le Rocher qui divise.

Wherefore Saul returned, leaving the pursuit of David, and went to meet the Philistines. For this cause they called that place, the Rock of division.

29 David monta donc de là, et il habita dans les lieux les plus sûrs d’Engaddi.

Then David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds of Engaddi.
