1 Samuel 21

1 Or. David vint à Nobé vers Achimélech, le prêtre; et Achimélech fut tout étonné de ce que David était venu. Et il lui dit: Pourquoi es-tu seul, et que personne n’est avec toi?

Then David went into Nob, to the priest Ahimelech. And Ahimelech was astonished that David had arrived. And he said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one is with you?”

2 Et David répondit à Achimélech, le prêtre: Le roi m’a donné un ordre, et il a dit: Que personne ne sache la chose pour laquelle tu es envoyé par moi, et quels sont les commandements que je t’ai donnés; car j’ai même assigné un rendez-vous à mes serviteurs en tel et tel lieu.

And David said to the priest Ahimelech: “The king has instructed to me a word, and he said: ‘Let no one know the matter about which you have been sent by me, and what type of instructions I have given to you. For I have also summoned servants to one and another place.’

3 Maintenant donc si vous avez quelque chose sous la main, même cinq pains, donnez-les-moi, ou bien tout ce que vous trouverez.

Now therefore, if you have anything at hand, even five loaves of bread, or whatever you may find, give it to me.”

4 Et le prêtre répondant à David, lui dit: Je n’ai point de pains pour le peuple sous la main, seulement au pain saint. Est-ce que tes serviteurs sont purs, surtout par rapport aux femmes?

And the priest, responding to David, said to him: “I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread. Are the young men clean, especially from women?”

5 Et David répondit au prêtre; et il lui dit: Certainement, s’il s’agit de femmes; nous nous sommes abstenus depuis hier et avant-hier, quand nous sommes partis, et les vases des serviteurs étaient purs. À la vérité, cette route a été souillée, mais elle sera sanctifiée elle-même aujourd’hui dans les vases.

And David responded to the priest, and said to him: “Indeed, as concerns being with women, we have abstained since yesterday and the day before, when we departed, and so the vessels of the young men have been holy. And although, this journey has been defiled, it will also be sanctified today as concerns the vessels.”

6 Le prêtre lui donna donc du pain sanctifié; car il n’y avait point là de pain, si ce n’est seulement les pains de proposition, qui avaient été enlevés de devant le Seigneur pour y placer des pains chauds.

Therefore, the priest gave to him sanctified bread. For there was no bread there, but only the bread of the Presence, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, so that fresh loaves might be set up.

7 Or, il y avait en ce jour-là un certain homme des serviteurs de Saül, au dedans du tabernacle du Seigneur; et son nom était Doëg l’Iduméen, le plus puissant des pasteurs de Saül.

Now a certain man among the servants of Saul was there on that day, inside the tabernacle of the Lord. And his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most powerful among the shepherds of Saul.

8 David demanda donc à Achimélech: Avez-vous ici sous la main une lance ou un glaive? parce que je n’ai pas porté avec moi mon glaive, ni mes armes; car la parole du roi pressait.

Then David said to Ahimelech: “Do you have, here at hand, a spear or a sword? For I did not take my own sword, or my own weapons with me. For the word of the king was urgent.”

9 Et le prêtre répondit: Voici le glaive de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la Vallée du térébinthe; il est enveloppé dans le manteau derrière l’éphod: si tu veux l’emporter, emporte-le; car il n’y en a point ici d’autre que celui-là. Et David dit: Il n’y en a point d’autre semblable à celui-là, donnez-le moi.

And the priest said: “Behold, here is the sword of Goliath, the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Terebinth. It is wrapped up in a cloak behind the ephod. If you wish to take this, take it. For there is nothing else here except this.” And David said, “There is nothing else like this, so give it to me.”

10 C’est pourquoi David se leva, et s’enfuit en ce jour-là de devant Saul, et vint vers Achis, roi de Geth.

And so, David rose up, and he fled on that day from the face of Saul. And he went to Achish, the king of Gath.

11 Et les serviteurs d’Achis lui dirent, lorsqu’ils eurent vu David; N’est-ce pas ce David, le roi de la terre? N’est-ce pas pour lui qu’on chantait dans les chœurs, en disant: Saül en a tué mille, et David dix mille?

And the servants of Achish, when they had seen David, said to him: “Is this not David, the king of the land? Were they not singing about him, while dancing, saying, ‘Saul has struck down a thousand, and David ten thousand?’”

12 Mais David recueillit ces paroles en son cœur, et il craignit beaucoup de la part d’Achis, roi de Geth;

Then David took these words to his heart, and he became exceedingly afraid before the face of Achish, the king of Gath.

13 Aussi il changea de visage devant eux; et il tombait entre leurs mains, et il se heurtait contre les battants de la porte, et sa salive découlait sur sa barbe.

And he altered his mouth before them, and he slipped down between their hands. And he stumbled against the doors of the gate. And his spit flowed down his beard.

14 Et Achis dit à ses serviteurs: Vous avez vu un homme insensé; pourquoi l’avez-vous amené vers moi?

And Achish said to his servants: “You saw that the man is insane. Why did you bring him to me?

15 Est-ce que les furieux nous manquent, que vous avez introduit celui-ci, pour qu’il délire, moi présent? Est-ce que cet homme entrera dans ma maison?

Or do we have need of those who are mad, so that you would bring in this one, to behave madly in my presence? How did this man get into my house?”
