1 Samuel 17
1 Or les Philistins assemblant leurs troupes pour le combat, se réunirent à Socho de Juda, et ils campèrent entre Socho et Azéca sur les confins de Dommim.
Nowe the Philistims gathered their armies to battell, and came together to Shochoh, which is in Iudah, and pitched betweene Shochoh and Azekah, in the coast of Dammim.
2 Mais Saül et les enfants d’Israël, s’étant assemblés, vinrent dans la Vallée du térébinthe, et rangèrent leur armée en bataille pour combattre contre les Philistins.
And Saul, and the men of Israel assembled, and pitched in the valley of Elah, and put themselues in battell araie to meete the Philistims.
3 Et les Philistins se tenaient sur la montagne d’un côté, et Israël se tenait sur la montagne de l’autre côté, et la vallée était entre eux.
And the Philistims stoode on a mountaine on the one side, and Israel stoode on a mountaine on the other side: so a valley was betweene them.
4 Et il sortit du camp des Philistins un homme de père inconnu, du nom de Goliath, de Geth, de la hauteur de six coudées et d’un palme;
Then came a man betweene them both out of the tents of the Philistims, named Goliath of Gath: his height was sixe cubites and an hande breadth,
5 Et un casque d’airain était sur sa tête, et il était vêtu d’une cuirasse à écailles; or, le poids de sa cuirasse était de cinq mille sicles d’airain;
Aud had an helmet of brasse vpon his head, and a brigandine vpon him: and the weight of his brigandine was fiue thousand shekels of brasse.
6 Et il avait des bottes d’airain sur les jambes, et un bouclier d’airain couvrait ses épaules.
And he had bootes of brasse vpon his legs, and a shield of brasse vpon his shoulders.
7 Mais la hampe de sa lance était comme un ensouple de tisserands; mais le fer lui-même de sa lance pesait six cents sicles de fer; et son écuyer le précédait;
And the shaft of his speare was like a weauers beame: and his speare head weyed sixe hundreth shekels of yron: and one bearing a shielde went before him.
8 Et, se présentant, il criait devant les phalanges d’Israël, et leur disait: Pourquoi êtes-vous venus, préparés au combat? Est-ce que moi je ne suis pas Philistin, et vous serviteurs de Saül? Choisissez un homme d’entre vous, et qu’il descende pour un combat singulier;
And he stoode, and cried against the hoste of Israel, and saide vnto them, Why are yee come to set your battell in aray? am not I a Philistim, and you seruaunts to Saul? chuse you a man for you, and let him come downe to me.
9 S’il peut combattre avec moi, et qu’il me tue, nous serons vos esclaves; mais si moi j’ai le dessus et que je le tue, c’est vous qui serez esclaves, et qui nous servirez.
If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then wil we be your seruants: but if I ouercome him, and kill him, then shall yee be our seruants, and serue vs.
10 Et le Philistin disait: C’est moi qui ai défié les troupes d’Israël aujourd’hui: donnez-moi un homme, et qu’il engage avec moi un combat singulier.
Also the Philistim saide, I defie the hoste of Israel this day: giue mee a man, that we may fight together.
11 Mais Saül et tous les Israélites, entendant les paroles d’un tel Philistin, étaient étonnés et avaient une grande peur.
When Saul and all Israel heard those wordes of the Philistim, they were discouraged, and greatly afraide.
12 Or, David était fils de cet homme Ephrathéen, dont il a été parlé plus haut, de Bethléhem-Juda, dont le nom était Isaï, qui avait huit fils, et qui était aux jours de Saül un homme vieux, et très avancé en âge parmi les hommes.
Nowe this Dauid was the sonne of an Ephrathite of Beth-lehem Iudah, named Ishai, which had eight sonnes: and this man was taken for an olde man in the daies of Saul.
13 Mais ses trois plus grands fils suivirent Saül au combat; et les noms de ses trois fils qui allèrent à la guerre, étaient Eliab, le premier-né, le second Abinadab, et le troisième Samma.
And the three eldest sonnes of Ishai went and followed Saul to the battel: and the names of his three sonnes that went to battell, were Eliab the Eldest, and the next Abinadab, and the thirde Shammah.
14 Or, David était le plus petit. Ainsi, les trois plus grands ayant suivi Saül,
So Dauid was the least: and the three eldest went after Saul.
15 David s’en alla, et revint d’auprès de Saul pour paître le troupeau de son père à Bethléhem.
Dauid also went, but hee returned from Saul to feede his fathers sheepe in Beth-lehem.
16 Cependant le Philistin s’avançait le matin et le soir, et il se présenta pendant quarante jours.
And the Philistim drew neere in the morning, and euening, and continued fourtie daies.
17 Or Isaï dit à David, son fils: Prends pour tes frères un éphi de grains rôtis et ces dix pains, et cours au camp vers tes frères;
And Ishai said vnto Dauid his sone, Take nowe for thy brethren an Ephah of this parched corne, and these ten cakes, and runne to the hoste to thy brethren.
18 Mais ces dix fromages, tu les porteras au tribun; et tu visiteras tes frères pour voir s’ils se portent bien, et sache avec qui ils ont été classés.
Also carie these ten fresh cheeses vnto the captaine, and looke howe thy brethren fare, and receiue their pledge.
19 Or, Saul et les fils d’Isaï, et! tous les enfants d’Israël combattaient dans la Vallée du térébinthe contre les Philistins.
(Then Saul and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistims)
20 C’est pourquoi David se leva le matin, confia le troupeau à un gardien, et s’en alla chargé, comme lui avait ordonné Isaï. Et il vint au lieu Magala, et vers l’armée, qui, sortie pour la bataille, poussait les cris du combat.
So Dauid rose vp earely in the morning, and left the sheepe with a keeper, and tooke and went as Ishai had commanded him, and came within the compasse of the hoste: and the hoste went out in araie, and shouted in the battell.
21 Car Israël avait rangé son armée; et vis-à vis, les Philistins s’étaient préparés.
For Israel and the Philistims had put themselues in araie, armie against armie.
22 David, laissant donc tout ce qu’il avait apporté aux mains du gardien des bagages, courut au lieu du combat; et il demandait si tout allait bien pour ses frères.
And Dauid left the things, which hee bare, vnder the handes of the keeper of the cariage, and ranne into the hoste, and came, and asked his brethren howe they did.
23 Et comme il leur parlait encore, parut montant du camp des Philistins, cet homme de père inconnu, du nom de Goliath, Philistin, de Geth; et comme il disait les mêmes paroles, David entendit.
And as hee talked with them, beholde, the man that was betweene the two armies, came vp, (whose name was Goliath ye Philistim of Gath) out of the armie of the Philistims, and spake such woordes, and Dauid heard them.
24 Or, tous les Israélites ayant vu cet homme, s’enfuirent devant lui, le craignant.
And all the men of Israel, when they sawe the man, ranne away from him, and were sore afraied.
25 Et quelqu’un d’Israël dit: Est-ce que vous n’avez point vu cet homme qui est monté? c’est pour défier Israël qu’il est monté. Aussi le roi enrichira-t-il de grandes richesses l’homme qui le tuera, lui donnera-t-il sa fille, et rendra-t-il la maison de son père exempte du tribut en Israël.
For euery man of Israel saide, Sawe yee not this man that commeth vp? euen to reuile Israel is he come vp: and to him that killeth him, wil the king giue great riches, and will giue him his daughter, yea, and make his fathers house free in Israel.
26 Et David parla aux hommes qui étaient avec lui, disant: Que sera-t-il donné à l’homme qui tuera ce Philistin, et qui ôtera l’opprobre d’Israël? Car qui est ce Philistin incirconcis, qui a défié l’armée du Dieu vivant?
Then Dauid spake to the men that stoode with him, and sayde, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistim, and taketh away the shame from Israel? for who is this vncircumcised Philistim, that he shoulde reuile the hoste of the liuing God?
27 Et le peuple lui répétait la même parole, disant: Voilà ce qui sera donné à l’homme qui l’aura tué.
And the people answered him after this maner, saying, Thus shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
28 Ce qu’ayant entendu Eliab, son frère aîné, David parlant avec les autres, il fut irrité contre lui; et il dit: Pourquoi es-tu venu, pourquoi as-tu laissé ce peu de brebis dans le désert? Moi je connais ton orgueil et la méchanceté de ton cœur; car c’est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake vnto the men, and Eliab was verie angrie with Dauid, and sayde, Why camest thou downe hither? and with whome hast thou left those fewe sheepe in the wildernesse? I knowe thy pride and the malice of thine heart, that thou art come downe to see the battell.
29 Et David dit: Qu’ai-je fait? Est-ce que ce n’est pas une parole?
Then Dauid sayde, What haue I nowe done? Is there not a cause?
30 Et il se détourna un peu de lui vers un autre, et il lui dit la même parole. Et le peuple lui répondit comme auparavant.
And hee departed from him into the presence of another, and spake of the same maner, and the people answered him according to the former woordes.
31 Or les paroles que David dit furent entendues et rapportées en la présence de Saül.
And they that heard the wordes which Dauid spake, rehearsed them before Saul, which caused him to be brought.
32 Et comme il fut amené devant Saül, il lui dit: Que le cœur de personne ne s’abatte à cause de cet homme; moi, votre serviteur, j’irai, et je combattrai contre le Philistin.
So Dauid saide to Saul, Let no mans heart faile him, because of him: thy seruant wil goe, and fight with this Philistim.
33 Et Saul dit à David: Tu ne peux pas résister à ce Philistin, ni combattre contre lui, parce que tu es un enfant, et que celui-là est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse.
And Saul sayde to Dauid, Thou art not able to goe against this Philistim to fight with him: for thou art a boye, and he is a man of warre from his youth.
34 Et David répondit à Saül: Votre serviteur paissait le troupeau de son père, et venait le lion ou l’ours, et il emportait un bélier du milieu du troupeau;
And Dauid answered vnto Saul, Thy seruant kept his fathers sheepe, and there came a lyon, and likewise a beare, and tooke a sheepe out of the flocke,
35 Et je les poursuivais, et les attaquais, et j’arrachais la proie de leur gueule; et eux se levaient contre moi, alors je les prenais à la gorge, je les étranglais et je les tuais:
And I went out after him and smote him, and tooke it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by the beard, and smote him, and slue him.
36 Car moi, votre serviteur, j’ai tué un lion et un ours; il sera donc aussi, ce Philistin incirconcis, comme l’un d’eux. Maintenant j’irai, et j’enlèverai l’opprobre du peuple; car qui est ce Philistin incirconcis, qui a osé maudire l’armée du Dieu vivant?
So thy seruaunt slue both the lyon, and the beare: therefore this vncircumcised Philistim shall be as one of them, seeing hee hath railed on the hoste of the liuing God.
37 Et David ajouta: Le Seigneur qui m’a délivré des griffes du lion et des griffes de l’ours, lui-même me délivrera de la main de ce Philistin. Or, Saül dit à David: Va, et que le Seigneur soit avec toi.
Moreouer Dauid sayd, The Lord that deliuered me out of the pawe of the lyon, and out of the paw of the beare, he wil deliuer me out of the hand of this Philistim. Then Saul sayd vnto Dauid, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
38 Et Saül revêtit David de ses vêtements, et il mit un casque d’airain sur sa tête, et l’arma d’une cuirasse.
And Saul put his rayment vpon Dauid, and put an helmet of brasse vpon his head, and put a brigandine vpon him.
39 David donc s’étant ceint de son glaive sur son vêtement, commença à essayer si, armé, il pourrait marcher; car il n’en avait pas la coutume. Et David dit à Saül: Je ne puis marcher ainsi, parce que je n’en ai pas l’habitude. Et il déposa ces armes.
Then girded Dauid his sword vpon his rayment, and began to go: for he neuer proued it: and Dauid sayde vnto Saul, I can not goe with these: for I am not accustomed. wherefore Dauid put them off him.
40 Et il prit son bâton qu’il avait toujours en ses mains, et il se choisit cinq pierres du torrent très polies, et il les mit dans sa panetière de berger, qu’il avait avec lui, et il prit en sa main sa fronde, et il s’avança contre le Philistin.
Then tooke he his staffe in his hand, and chose him fiue smoothe stones out of a brooke, and put them in his shepheards bagge or skrippe, and his sling was in his hand, and he drewe neere to the Philistim.
41 Or, le Philistin allait marchant et s’approchant contre David, et son écuyer devant lui.
And the Philistim came and drew neere vnto Dauid, and the man that bare the shielde went before him.
42 Et lorsque le Philistin eut regardé et qu’il eut vu David, il le méprisa; car il était jeune, roux et d’un bel aspect.
Now when the Philistim looked about and saw Dauid, he disdeined him: for he was but yong, ruddie, and of a comely face.
43 Et le Philistin dit à David: Est-ce que je suis un chien, que tu viens à moi avec ce bâton? Et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux,
And the Philistim sayde vnto Dauid, Am I a dog, that thou commest to me with staues? And the Philistim cursed Dauid by his gods.
44 Et il dit à David: Viens à moi, et je donnerai ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.
And the Philistim sayd to Dauid, Come to me, and I will giue thy flesh vnto the foules of the heauen, and to the beastes of the field.
45 Mais David répondit au Philistin: Toi, tu viens à moi avec un glaive, une lance et un bouclier; mais moi, je viens à toi au nom du Seigneur des armées, du Dieu des troupes d’Israël, que tu as défiées
Then sayd Dauid to the Philistim, Thou commest to me with a sword, and with a speare, and with a shield, but I come to thee in the Name of the Lord of hostes, the God of the hoste of Israel, whom thou hast rayled vpon.
46 Aujourd’hui; le Seigneur te livrera à ma main; je te battrai, et je t’enlèverai la tête, et je donnerai aujourd’hui les cadavres du camp des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre, afin que toute la terre sache qu’il y a un Dieu en Israël,
This day shall the Lord close thee in mine hand, and I shall smite thee, and take thine head from thee, and I wil giue the carkeises of the hoste of the Philistims this daye vnto the foules of the heauen, and to the beasts of the earth, that all the world may know that Israel hath a God,
47 Et que toute cette multitude reconnaisse que ce n’est pas avec un glaive, ni avec une lance que le Seigneur sauve; car la guerre est à lui, et il vous livrera en nos mains.
And that all this assembly may know, that the Lord saueth not with sworde nor with speare (for the battel is the Lords) and he will giue you into our handes.
48 Lors donc que le Philistin se fut levé, et lorsqu’il venait et s’approchait contre David, David se hâta, et courut au combat vis-à-vis du Philistin.
And when the Philistim arose to come and drawe neere vnto Dauid, Dauid hasted and ran to fight against the Philistim.
49 Et il mit sa main dans la panetière, et il prit une pierre et la lança avec la fronde, qu’il fit tourner, et il frappa le Philistin au front, et la pierre s’enfonça dans son front, et il tomba sur sa face contre terre.
And Dauid put his hande in his bagge, and tooke out a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistim in his forehead, that the stone sticked in his forehead, and he fell groueling to the earth.
50 Ainsi David l’emporta sur le Philistin avec la fronde et la pierre, et tua le Philistin ainsi frappé. Et comme il n’avait point d’épée en sa main, David
So Dauid ouercame the Philistim with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistim, and slew him, when Dauid had no sword in his hand.
51 Courut, se jeta sur le Philistin, prit son glaive, et le tira du fourreau, puis il le tua et trancha sa tête. Or, les Philistins voyant que le plus fort d’entre eux était mort, s’enfuirent.
Then Dauid ranne, and stood vpon the Philistim, and tooke his sword and drew it out of his sheath, and slewe him, and cut off his head therewith. So whe the Philistims saw, that their champion was dead, they fled.
52 Et les hommes d’Israël et de Juda, se levant, poussèrent de grands cris, et poursuivirent les Philistins, jusqu’à ce qu’ils fussent venus à la vallée, et jusqu’aux portes d’Accaron, et les blessés des Philistins tombèrent dans la voie de Saraïm, jusqu’à Geth et jusqu’à Accaron.
And the men of Israel and Iudah arose, and shouted, and followed after the Philistims, vntill they came to the valley, and vnto the gates of Ekron: and the Philistims fell downe wounded by the way of Shaaraim, euen to Gath and to Ekron.
53 Et les enfants d’Israël, retournant après qu’ils eurent poursuivi les Philistins, s’emparèrent de leur camp.
And the children of Israel returned from pursuing the Philistims, and spoyled their tents.
54 Mais David, prenant la tête du Philistin, l’apporta à Jérusalem; mais ses armes, il les déposa dans son tabernacle.
And Dauid tooke the head of ye Philistim, and brought it to Ierusalem, and put his armour in his tent.
55 Or, dans le temps où Saül vit David sortant contre le Philistin, il demanda à Abner, prince de la milice: De quelle famille descend ce jeune homme, Abner? Et Abner répondit: Votre âme vit, ô roi! si je le connais.
When Saul sawe Dauid go forth against the Philistim, he sayd vnto Abner the captaine of his hoste, Abner, whose sonne is this yong man? and Abner answered, As thy soule liueth, O King, I can not tell.
56 Et le roi reprit: Demande, toi, de qui est fils ce jeune homme.
Then the King sayde, Enquire thou whose sonne this yong man is.
57 Et lorsque David fut revenu, après avoir tué le Philistin, Abner le prit et l’introduisit devant Saül, ayant la tête du Philistin à la main.
And when Dauid was returned from the slaughter of the Philistim, then Abner tooke him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistim in his hand.
58 Et Saül lui demanda: De quelle famille es-tu, ô jeune homme? Et David répondit: Je suis le fils de votre serviteur Isaï, le Bethléhémite.
And Saul sayde to him, Whose sonne art thou, thou yong man? And Dauid answered, I am the sonne of thy seruant Ishai the Bethlehemite.
