1 Samuel 15
1 Et Samuel dit à Saül: Le Seigneur m’a envoyé pour vous oindre comme roi sur son peuple, Israël: maintenant donc écoutez la voix du Seigneur.
And Samuel said unto Saul: 'The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over His people, over Israel; now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
2 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: J’ai passé en revue tout ce qu’a fait Amalec à Israël, comment il lui résista dans le chemin, lorsqu’il montait de l’Égypte.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts: I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.
3 Maintenant donc va et bats Amalec et détruis tout ce qui est à lui: ne l’épargne point, et ne désire rien de ce qui lui appartient; mais tue depuis l’homme jusqu’à la femme, jusqu’au petit enfant, et celui qui est à la mamelle, jusqu’au bœuf, à la brebis, au chameau et à l’âne.
Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.'
4 C’est pourquoi Saül ordonna au peuple, et il les recensa comme des agneaux; et il y eut deux cent mille hommes de pied et dix mille de la tribu de Juda.
And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 Et quand Saül fut venu jusqu’à la ville d’Amalec, il dressa des embuscades sur le bord du torrent.
And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Et Saül dit au Cinéen: Allez, retirez-vous, et descendez loin d’Amalec, de peur que je ne t’enveloppe avec lui; car tu as fait miséricorde à tous les enfants d’Israël, lorsqu’ils montaient de l’Égypte. Et le Cinéen se retira du milieu d’Amalec.
And Saul said unto the Kenites: 'Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.' So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 Et Saül battit Amalec depuis Hévila jusqu’à ce qu’on vienne à Sur, qui est vis-à-vis de l’Égypte.
And Saul smote the Amalekites, from Havilah as thou goest to Shur, that is in front of Egypt.
8 Et il prit Agag, roi d’Amalec, vivant; mais tout le peuple, il le tua par le tranchant du glaive.
And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 Et Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, les meilleurs troupeaux de brebis et de bœufs, les vêtements, les béliers et tout ce qui était beau, et ils ne voulurent pas les détruire; mais tout ce qui était vil et méprisable, voilà ce qu’ils détruisirent.
But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, even the young of the second birth, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; but every thing that was of no account and feeble, that they destroyed utterly.
10 Or, la parole du Seigneur se fit entendre à Samuel, disant:
Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying:
11 Je me repens d’avoir établi Saül roi, parce qu’il m’a abandonné, et qu’il n’a pas accompli mes paroles par ses œuvres. Et Samuel fut contristé, et il cria vers le Seigneur pendant toute la nuit.
'It repenteth Me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following Me, and hath not performed My commandments.' And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
12 Et lorsque Samuel se fut levé de nuit pour aller vers Saül au matin, on annonça à Samuel que Saül était venu sur le Carmel, qu’il s’était érigé un arc de triomphe, et que, retournant, il était passé et descendu à Galgala. Samuel vint donc vers Saül, et Saül offrait un holocauste au Seigneur des prémices des dépouilles qu’il avait emportées d’Amalec.
And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying: 'Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he is setting him up a monument, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.'
13 Et quand Samuel fut venu vers Saül, Saül lui dit: Béni soyez-vous du Seigneur! J’ai accompli la parole du Seigneur,
And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him: 'Blessed be thou of the LORD; I have performed the commandment of the LORD.'
14 Et Samuel demanda: Quelle est cette voix de brebis, qui retentit à mes oreilles, et de bœufs, que j’entends?
And Samuel said: 'What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?'
15 Et Saül répondit: On les a amenés d’Amalec; car le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs, pour qu’ils fussent immolés au Seigneur votre Dieu; mais le reste nous l’avons tué.
And Saul said: 'They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.'
16 Mais Samuel dit à Saül: Laissez-moi, et je vous déclarerai ce que le Seigneur m’a dit pendant cette nuit. Et il lui répondit: Parlez.
Then Samuel said unto Saul: 'Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night.' And he said unto him: 'Say on.'
17 Et Samuel dit: Est-ce que, quand vous étiez petit à vos yeux, vous n’êtes pas devenu chef parmi les tribus d’Israël? Le Seigneur vous a même oint comme roi sur Israël;
And Samuel said: 'Though thou be little in thine own sight, art thou not head of the tribes of Israel? And the LORD anointed thee king over Israel;
18 De plus, il vous a lancé dans la voie, et il a dit: Va, et tue les pécheurs d’Amalec, et tu combattras contre eux jusqu’à leur entière extermination.
and the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said: Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Pourquoi donc n’avez-vous pas écouté la voix du Seigneur; mais, que vous étant tourné du côté du butin, vous avez fait le mal sous les yeux du Seigneur?
Wherefore then didst thou not hearken to the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst that which was evil in the sight of the LORD?'
20 Et Saül répondit à Samuel: Au contraire, j’ai écouté la voix du Seigneur, et j’ai marché dans la voie dans laquelle m’a lancé le Seigneur, et j’ai amené Agag, roi d’Amalec, et j’ai tué Amalec.
And Saul said unto Samuel: 'Yea, I have hearkened to the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 Mais le peuple a pris dans le butin des brebis et des bœufs, prémices de ceux qui ont été taillés en pièces, pour les immoler au Seigneur son Dieu à Galgala.
But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.'
22 Et Samuel repartit: Est-ce que le Seigneur veut des holocaustes et des victimes, et non pas plutôt qu’on obéisse à la voix du Seigneur? Car l’obéissance est (meilleure) que des victimes, et écouter vaut mieux qu’offrir de la graisse de béliers.
And Samuel said: 'Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in hearkening to the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 Car c’est comme un péché de magie que de résister, et comme un crime d’idolâtrie, que de ne vouloir pas se rendre. Parce donc que vous avez rejeté la parole du Seigneur, le Seigneur vous a rejeté, afin que vous ne soyez plus roi.
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, He hath also rejected thee from being king.'
24 Et Saül répondit à Samuel: J’ai péché, parce que j’ai prévariqué contre la parole du Seigneur et vos paroles, craignant le peuple et obéissant à sa voix.
And Saul said unto Samuel: 'I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words; because I feared the people, and hearkened to their voice.
25 Mais maintenant portez, je vous prie, mon péché, et retournez avec moi, afin que j’adore le Seigneur.
Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD.'
26 Et Samuel répliqua à Saül: Je ne retournerai pas avec vous, parce que vous avez rejeté la parole du Seigneur, et que le Seigneur vous a rejeté, afin que vous ne soyez plus roi sur Israël.
And Samuel said unto Saul: 'I will not return with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.'
27 Et Samuel se tourna pour s’en aller, mais Saül saisit le coin de son manteau, qui se déchira,
And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it rent.
28 Et Samuel lui dit: Le Seigneur a déchiré le royaume d’Israël, en vous l’ôtant aujourd’hui, et il l’a livré à votre prochain, meilleur que vous.
And Samuel said unto him: 'The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29 Or, le Triomphateur en Israël n’épargnera point, et il ne sera pas touché de repentir; car ce n’est pas un homme pour qu’il se repente.
And also the Glory of Israel will not lie nor repent; for He is not a man, that He should repent.'
30 Mais Saül reprit: J’ai péché; mais honorez-moi maintenant devant les anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël et retournez avec moi, afin que j’adore le Seigneur votre Dieu.
Then he said: 'I have sinned; yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.'
31 Samuel donc, retournant, suivit Saül; et Saül adora le Seigneur.
So Samuel returned after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
32 Alors Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d’Amalec. Et on lui présenta Agag, fort gras et tremblant. Et Agag dit: Est-ce ainsi que la mort amère sépare?
Then said Samuel: 'Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.' And Agag came unto him in chains. And Agag said: 'Surely the bitterness of death is at hand.'
33 Et Samuel répondit: Comme ton glaive a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, ainsi ta mère sera sans enfants parmi les femmes. Et Samuel le coupa en morceaux devant le Seigneur à Galgala.
And Samuel said: As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34 Or, Samuel s’en alla à Ramatha; mais Saül monta en sa maison à Gabaa.
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeath-shaul.
35 Et Samuel ne vit plus Saül jusqu’au jour de sa mort; cependant Samuel pleurait Saül, parce que le Seigneur se repentait de l’avoir établi roi sur Israël
And Samuel never beheld Saul again until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul; and the LORD repented that He had made Saul king over Israel.
