1 Samuel 13
1 Saül avait un an, lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna pendant deux ans sur Israël.
Saul [is] a son of [[thirty]] years in his reigning, and he has reigned over Israel [forty]-two years,
2 Et il se choisit trois mille hommes d’Israël; or, il y en avait deux mille avec Saül à Machmas, et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille avec Jonathas à Gabaa-Benjamin; pour le reste du peuple, il renvoya chacun dans son tabernacle.
then Saul chooses for himself three thousand [men] out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and one thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and he has sent each one of the remnant of the people to his tents.
3 Et Jonathas battit la garnison des Philistins, qui était à Gabaa. Lorsque les Philistins l’eurent appris, Saül sonna de la trompette dans tout le pays, disant: Que les Hébreux entendent.
And Jonathan strikes the garrison of the Philistines which [is] in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul has blown with a horn through all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.”
4 Or tout Israël apprit cette nouvelle: Saül a battu la garnison des Philistins; et Israël se leva contre les Philistins. Le peuple cria donc après Saul à Galgala.
And all Israel have heard, saying, “Saul has struck the garrison of the Philistines,” and also, “Israel has been abhorred by the Philistines”; and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.
5 Et les Philistins s’assemblèrent pour combattre contre Israël, avec trente mille chariots, six mille cavaliers et le reste de la multitude, semblable au sable nombreux qui est sur le rivage de la mer. Et, montant, ils campèrent à Machmas, vers l’orient de Béthaven.
And the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which [is] on the seashore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.
6 Lorsque les hommes d’Israël virent qu’ils étaient ainsi resserrés (car le peuple était affligé), ils se cachèrent dans les cavernes, dans les lieux retirés, dans les rochers même, dans les antres et dans les citernes.
And the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people have been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7 Mais les Hébreux passèrent le Jourdain et vinrent dans la terre de Gad et de Galaad. Et comme Saül était à Galgala, tout le peuple qui le suivait, était épouvanté.
And Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul [is] yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.
8 Et il attendit durant sept jours, selon l’ordre de Samuel, et Samuel ne vint point à Galgala, et le peuple se détacha de Saül.
And he waits seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel has not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.
9 Saul dit: Apportez-moi l’holocauste et les hosties pacifiques. Et il offrit l’holocauste.
And Saul says, “Bring the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings near to me”; and he causes the burnt-offering to ascend.
10 Et comme il achevait d’offrir l’holocauste, voilà que Samuel arrivait; et Saul sortit au devant de lui pour le saluer.
And it comes to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that behold, Samuel has come, and Saul goes out to meet him, to bless him;
11 Et Samuel lui demanda: Qu’avez-vous fait? Saül répondit: Parce que j’ai vu que le peuple se détachait de moi, et que vous n’étiez pas venu, selon les jours marqués, mais que les Philistins s’étaient assemblés à Machmas,
and Samuel says, “What have you done?” And Saul says, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and you had not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,
12 J’ai dit: Maintenant les Philistins descendront vers moi à Galgala, et je n’ai point apaisé la face du Seigneur. Poussé par la nécessité, j’ai offert l’holocauste.
and I say, Now the Philistines come down to me to Gilgal, and I have not appeased the face of YHWH; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.”
13 Et Samuel dit à Saul: Vous avez agi en insensé, et vous n’avez pas gardé les commandements du Seigneur votre Dieu, qu’il vous a prescrits. Si vous n’aviez point fait cela, le Seigneur aurait déjà maintenant établi votre règne sur Israël pour toujours;
And Samuel says to Saul, “You have been foolish; you have not kept the command of your God YHWH, which He commanded you, for now YHWH had established your kingdom over Israel for all time;
14 Mais votre règne ne subsistera plus désormais. Le Seigneur s’est cherché un homme selon son cœur; et le Seigneur lui a ordonné d’être chef sur son peuple, parce que vous n’avez pas observé ce qu’a ordonné le Seigneur.
and now, your kingdom does not stand, YHWH has sought [for] a man for Himself according to His own heart, and YHWH charges him for leader over His people, for you have not kept that which YHWH commanded you.”
15 Or, Samuel se leva, et monta de Galgala à Gabaa-Benjamin. Et le reste du peuple, monta après Saül au-devant du peuple des Philistins qui les attaquait, tandis qu’ils venaient de Galgala à Gabaa sur la colline de Benjamin. Et Saül fit la revue du peuple, qui se trouvait avec lui au nombre d’environ six cents hommes.
And Samuel rises, and goes up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspects the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,
16 Ainsi Saül et Jonathas, son fils, et tout le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux, étaient à Gabaa-Benjamin; mais les Philistins s’étaient postés à Machmas.
and Saul, and his son Jonathan, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.
17 Alors sortirent pour piller trois bataillons de Philistins. Un bataillon allait en face de la voie d’Ephra, vers la terre de Sual;
And the destroyer goes out from the camp of the Philistines—three detachments: one detachment turns to the way of Ophrah, to the land of Shual,
18 Mais l’autre s’avançait par la voie de Béthoron, et le troisième avait tourné vers le chemin du territoire qui domine la vallée de Séboïm, contre le désert.
and one detachment turns the way of Beth-Horon, and one detachment turns the way of the border which is looking on the Valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.
19 Or, il ne se trouvait point de forgeron dans toute la terre d’Israël; car les Philistins avaient pris ces mesures, de peur que les Hébreux ne fissent des glaives ou des lances.
And a craftsman is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear”;
20 Tout Israël descendait donc chez les Philistins, pour aiguiser chacun son soc de charrue, son boyau, sa cognée et son sarcloir.
and all Israel goes down to the Philistines, to each sharpen his plowshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;
21 C’est pourquoi les tranchants des socs de charrue, des hoyaux, des fourches et des cognées étaient émoussés jusqu’à la pointe qu’il fallait redresser.
and there has been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.
22 Et lorsque fut venu le jour du combat, il ne se trouva ni épée, ni lance dans la main de tout le peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathas, excepté dans celle de Saül et de Jonathas, son fils.
And it has been, in the day of battle, that there has not been found a sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who [are] with Saul and with Jonathan—but it is found with Saul and with his son Jonathan.
23 Or, la garnison des Philistins sortit, pour passer vers Machmas.
And the station of the Philistines goes out to the passage of Michmash.
