1 Pierre 4
1 Le Christ donc ayant souffert pour nous en sa chair, armez vous aussi de la même pensée, car celui qui a souffert en sa chair cesse de pécher;
Since, then, Christ suffered in body, arm yourselves with the same resolve as he; for he who has suffered in body has ceased to sin,
2 En sorte que ce n’est plus selon les convoitises des hommes, mais selon la volonté de Dieu qu’il vit, durant ce qui lui reste de temps dans la chair.
and so will live the rest of his earthly life guided, not by human passions, but by the will of God.
3 Car c’est assez de temps consacré à satisfaire la volonté des gentils, pour ceux qui ont vécu dans les impudicités, les convoitises, la crapule, les excès du manger et du boire, et le culte sacrilège des idoles.
Surely in the past you have spent time enough living as the Gentiles delight to live. For your path has lain among scenes of debauchery, licentiousness, drunkenness, revelry, hard-drinking, and profane idolatry.
4 Sur quoi ils s’étonnent que vous ne couriez plus avec eux à cette même confusion de désordres, et ils blasphèment.
And, because you do not run to the same extremes of profligacy as others, they are astonished, and malign you.
5 Mais ils rendront compte à celui qui est prêt à juger les vivants et les morts.
But they will have to answer for their conduct to him who is ready to judge both the living and the dead.
6 Car c’est pour cela que l’Évangile a été prêché aux morts eux-mêmes, afin que jugés devant les hommes selon la chair, ils vivent devant Dieu selon l’esprit.
For that was why the good news was told to the dead also – that, after they have been judged in the body, as people are judged, they might live in the spirit, as God lives.
7 Or la fin de toutes choses est proche. Soyez donc prudents et veillez dans la prière.
But the end of all things is near. Therefore exercise self-restraint and be calm, so that you may be able to pray.
8 Mais avant tout, ayez les uns pour les autres une charité constante; car la charité couvre la multitude des péchés.
Above all things, let your love for one another be earnest, for ‘Love throws a veil over countless sins.’
9 Exercez l’hospitalité entre vous sans murmure;
Never grudge hospitality to one another.
10 Chacun de vous mettant au service des autres la grâce qu’il a reçue, comme de bons dispensateurs de la grâce multiforme de Dieu.
Whatever the gift that each has received, use it in the service of others, as good stewards of the varied bounty of God.
11 Si quelqu’un parle, que ce soit comme des paroles de Dieu; si quelqu’un exerce un ministère, qu’il le fasse comme par la vertu que Dieu donne; afin qu’en toutes choses Dieu soit glorifié par Jésus-Christ, à qui est la gloire et l’empire dans les siècles des siècles. Amen. (aiōn g165)
When anyone speaks, they should speak as one who is delivering the oracles of God. When anyone is endeavoring to serve others, they should do so in reliance on the strength which God supplies; so that in everything God may be honored through Jesus Christ – to whom be ascribed all honor and might for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
12 Mes bien-aimés, ne soyez pas surpris du feu ardent qui sert à vous éprouver, comme si quelque chose d’extraordinaire vous arrivait;
Dear friends, do not be astonished at the trial of fire that you are passing through, to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
13 Mais participant ainsi aux souffrances du Christ, réjouissez-vous, afin qu’à la révélation de sa gloire vous vous réjouissiez aussi, transportés d’allégresse.
No, the more you share the sufferings of the Christ, the more may you rejoice, that, when the time comes for the manifestation of his glory, you may rejoice and exult.
14 Si on vous outrage pour le nom du Christ, vous serez bien heureux, parce que l’honneur, la gloire, la vertu de Dieu et son Esprit reposent sur vous.
If you are insulted for bearing the name of Christ, count yourselves blessed; because the divine glory and the Spirit of God are resting on you.
15 Mais qu’aucun de vous ne souffre comme homicide, ou voleur, ou médisant, ou avide du bien d’autrui.
I need hardly say that no one among you must suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a criminal, or for interfering in matters which do not concern Christians.
16 Et si c’est comme chrétien, qu’il ne rougisse point, mais qu’il glorifie Dieu en ce monde.
But, if someone suffers as a Christian, they should not be ashamed of it; they should bring honor to God even though they bear that name.
17 Car voici le temps où doit commencer le jugement par la maison de Dieu. Or s’il commence par nous, quelle sera la fin de ceux qui ne croient pas à l’Évangile de Dieu?
For the time has come for judgment to begin with the house of God; and, if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who reject God’s good news?
18 Et si le juste est à peine sauvé, l’impie et le pécheur, où se présenteront-ils?
If ‘a good person is saved only with difficulty, what will become of the godless and the sinful?’
19 Ainsi, que ceux-là mêmes qui souffrent selon la volonté de Dieu, remettent au Créateur fidèle leurs âmes avec leurs bonnes œuvres.
Therefore, I say, let those who suffer, because God wills it so, commit their lives into the hands of a faithful Creator, and persevere in doing right.
