1 Or Bénadad, roi de Syrie, assembla toute son armée, et trente-deux rois avec lui, des chevaux et des chars; puis montant, il combattait contre Samarie, et l’assiégeait.
Now, Ben-hadad, king of Syria, had gathered together all his forces, and, thirty-two kings, were with him, and horses and chariots, —then came he up, and laid siege to Samaria, and made war against it.
2 Et envoyant dans la ville des messagers à Achab, roi d’Israël,
And he sent messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, —Thus, saith Ben-hadad,
3 Il dit: Voici ce que dit Bénadad: Votre argent et votre or est à moi; vos femmes et vos enfants les meilleurs sont à moi.
Thy silver and thy gold, are, mine, and, thy wives and thy sons, the goodliest, are, mine.
4 Et le roi d’Israël lui répondit: Selon votre parole, ô roi mon seigneur, je suis à vous, moi et tout ce que j’ai.
Then responded the king of Israel, and said, According to thy word, my lord O king! thine, am I, and all that I have.
5 Et revenant, les messagers dirent: Voici ce que dit Bénadad, qui nous a envoyés vers vous: Vous me donnerez votre argent, votre or, vos femmes et vos fils.
And the messengers came back again, and said, Thus, speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, —Because I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver and thy gold and thy wives and thy sons, to me, shalt thou give,
6 Demain donc, à cette même heure, j’enverrai mes serviteurs vers vous, et ils fouilleront votre maison et la maison de vos serviteurs, et tout ce qui leur plaira, ils le prendront en leurs mains et l’emporteront.
Therefore, about this time to-morrow, will I send my servants unto thee, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants, —and it shall be, that, all the delight of thine eyes, shall they put in their hand, and take away.
7 Mais le roi d’Israël appela tous les anciens du pays, et dit: Considérez et voyez qu’il nous tend un piège; car il m’a envoyé pour mes femmes, pour mes fils, pour mon argent et mon or, et je n’ai pas refusé.
Then called the king of Israel, for all the elders of the land, and said—Mark, I pray you, and see, how this man is seeking, mischief, —for he had sent unto me, for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I refused him not.
8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui répondirent: Ne l’écoûtez point, et ne lui cédez point.
And all the elders and all the people said unto him, —Do not thou hearken, neither do thou consent.
9 C’est pourquoi Achab répondit aux messagers de Bénadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: Tout ce que vous m’avez demandé, à moi votre serviteur, au commencement, je le ferai, mais, quant à ceci, je ne le puis faire.
So he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad—Say ye to my lord the king, —All that thou didst send for, to thy servant at the first, will I do, but, this thing, I cannot do. And the messengers departed, and took him back word.
10 Et, étant revenus, les messagers firent leur rapport à Bénadad, et Bénadad les envoya de nouveau, et dit: Que les dieux me fassent ceci, et qu’ils ajoutent cela, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir le creux de la main de tout le peuple qui me suit!
Then Ben-hadad sent unto him and said, —So, let the gods do to me, and, so, let them add, —if the dust of Samaria suffice by handfuls, for all the people who are at my feet.
11 Et répondant, le roi d’Israël dit: Dites-lui: Que celui qui a mis sa ceinture, ne se glorifie point comme celui qui l’a ôtée.
And the king of Israel responded and said: Tell him, —Let not, him that girdeth, boast himself like him, that looseneth.
12 Or il arriva que lorsque Bénadad reçut cette réponse, il buvait, lui et les autres rois, dans leurs pavillons, et il dit à ses serviteurs: Investissez la ville. Et ils l’investirent.
And it came to pass, when he heard this message, as, he, was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants—Make ready! So they made ready, against the city.
13 Et voilà qu’un prophète, s’approchant d’Achab, roi d’Israël, lui dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Sans doute que tu as vu toute cette multitude innombrable? voilà que moi je la livrerai en ta main aujourd’hui, afin que tu saches que c’est moi qui suis le Seigneur.
And lo! a certain prophet, drew near unto Ahab king of Israel, and said, —Thus, saith Yahweh, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? Behold me! delivering it into thy hand, to-day, so shalt thou know that, I, am, Yahweh.
14 Et Achab lui demanda: Par qui? Et il lui répondit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Par les serviteurs des princes des provinces. Achab ajouta: Qui commencera le combat? Et le prophète répondit: Toi.
And Ahab said—By whom? And he said—Thus, saith Yahweh, By the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then said he—Who shall begin the war? And he said—Thou!
15 Achab fit donc la revue des serviteurs des princes des provinces, et il trouva le nombre de deux cent trente-deux; et après eux, il fit la revue du peuple de tous les enfants d’Israël, et il en trouva sept mille.
Then numbered he the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were found to be, two hundred and thirty-two, —and, after them, he numbered all the people all the sons of Israel, seven thousand.
16 Et ils sortirent à midi. Cependant Bénadad buvait, ivre, dans son pavillon, et avec lui les trente-deux rois qui étaient venus à son secours.
And they went forth at noon. Now, Ben-hadad, was drinking himself drunk, in the pavilions, he and the thirty-two kings helping him.
17 Or les serviteurs des princes des provinces sortirent au premier rang. C’est pourquoi Bénadad envoya; et on lui annonça, en disant: Ce sont des hommes sortis de Samarie.
Then went forth the young men of the princes of the provinces, first, —and, when Ben-hadad sent, they told him, saying—Men, have come forth, out of Samaria.
18 Et lui répondit: Si c’est pour la paix qu’ils viennent, saisissez-les vivants; si c’est pour combattre, prenez-les vivants.
And he said—If, peaceably, they have come, take them alive, —or, if, fighting, they have come, alive, take ye them.
19 Les serviteurs des princes des provinces sortirent donc, et le reste de l’armée suivait;
Now, when, these, had come forth out of the city, even the young men of the princes of the provinces, —with the force which was following them,
20 Et chacun d’eux frappa celui qui venait contre lui; alors les Syriens s’enfuirent, et Israël les poursuivit. Bénadad, roi de Syrie, s’enfuit aussi à cheval avec ses cavaliers.
then smote they every one his man, and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, —but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on horse, with horsemen.
21 Et même le roi d’Israël, étant sorti, frappa les chevaux et les chariots, et frappa la Syrie d’une grande plaie.
And the king of Israel went forth, and took the horses and the chariots, —and he went on smiting the Syrians, with a great smiting.
22 (Alors le prophète, s’approchant du roi d’Israël, lui dit: Allez, fortifiez-vous, sachez et voyez ce que vous devez faire; car l’année suivante le roi de Syrie montera contre vous.)
Then drew near the prophet, unto the king of Israel, and said unto him—Go strengthen thyself, and mark and see, what thou wilt do, —for, at the return of the year, is, the king of Syria, coming up against thee.
23 Mais les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: Ce sont les dieux des montagnes, que leurs dieux, et c’est pourquoi ils nous ont vaincus; il vaut donc mieux que nous combattions contre eux dans les plaines, et nous l’emporterons sur eux.
And, the servants of the king of Syria, said unto him, —Gods of the mountains, are their gods, for this cause, prevailed they against us, —but, only let us fight with them in the plain, and verily we shall prevail against them.
24 Vous donc, faites cette chose-ci: éloignez tous les rois de votre armée, et mettez des officiers en leur place;
But, this thing, do, —set aside the kings, every man out of his place, and put governors in their stead;
25 Rétablissez le nombre de ceux de vos soldats qui ont succombé, et autant de chevaux que les premiers chevaux, et autant de chariots que vous avez eu de chariots auparavant; et nous combattrons contre eux dans les plaines, et vous verrez que nous l’emporterons sur eux. Il crut leur conseil, et il fit ainsi.
and, thou, must number thee a force, like the force which thou hast lost, both horse for horse and chariot for chariot, and, if we fight with them in the plain, verily we shall prevail against them. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26 Ainsi après qu’un an fut passé, Bénadad fit la revue des Syriens, et il monta à Aphec pour combattre contre Israël.
And so it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, —and came up to Aphek, to fight with Israel;
27 Les enfants d’Israël furent aussi passés en revue; et, des vivres pris, ils partirent de leur côté, et campèrent vis-à-vis deux, comme deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, au lieu que les Syriens couvraient toute la terre.
and, the sons of Israel, were numbered, and provisioned, and went to meet them, —and the sons of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, whereas, the Syrians, filled the land.
28 (Alors s’approchant, un homme de Dieu dit au roi d’Israël: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: C’est le Dieu des montagnes que le Seigneur, et il n’est pas le Dieu des vallées, je mettrai toute cette grande multitude en ta main, et vous saurez que c’est moi qui suis le Seigneur.)
Then approached the man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said—Thus, saith Yahweh—Because the Syrians have said—A god of the mountains, is Yahweh, but, not a god of the vales, is he, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude, into thy hand, so shalt thou know, that, I, am Yahweh.
29 Or durant sept jours ceux-ci et ceux-là rangèrent les armées en bataille, l’une vis-à-vis de l’autre, mais au septième jour la bataille fut engagée, et les enfants d’Israël tuèrent, parmi les Syriens, cent mille hommes de pied en un seul jour.
So they encamped, these, over against, those, seven days, —and it came to pass, on the seventh day, that the battle was joined, and the sons of Israel smote the Syrians, a hundred thousand footmen, in one day.
30 Et ceux qui étaient restés s’enfuirent dans la ville d’Aphec, et le mur tomba sur vingt-sept mille hommes qui étaient restés. Quant à Bénadad, fuyant, il entra dans la ville, et se retira dans une chambre, qui était dans sa chambre;
And they who were left fled to Aphek, into the city, and the wall fell upon twenty-seven thousand men who were left, —and, Ben-hadad, fled, and came into the city, into a chamber within a chamber.
31 Et ses serviteurs lui dirent: Voilà que nous avons ouï dire que les rois de la maison d’Israël sont cléments: mettons donc des sacs sur nos reins et des cordes à nos têtes, et sortons vers le roi d’Israël; peut-être qu’il sauvera nos âmes.
And his servants said unto him, Lo! we pray thee, we have heard, of the kings of the house of Israel, that, kings known for lovingkindness, they are. Let us, we pray thee, put sackcloth upon our loins, and ropes about our head, and let us go forth unto the king of Israel, peradventure he will save alive thy soul.
32 Ils ceignirent donc de sacs leurs reins, mirent des cordes à leurs têtes, vinrent vers le roi d’Israël, et lui dirent: Votre serviteur Bénadad dit: Je vous prie, que mon âme vive. Et lui répondit: S’il vit encore, il est mon frère.
So they girded sackcloth upon their loins, and [put] ropes about their heads, and came in unto the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant, Ben-hadad, saith, —Let my soul live, I pray thee. And he said, —Is he yet alive? My brother, he is.
33 Ce que les Syriens prirent pour un heureux présage; et, se hâtant, ils saisirent cette parole de sa bouche et dirent: Bénadad est votre frère. Et il leur répondit: Allez, et amenez-le-moi. Bénadad sortit donc vers Achab, qui le fit monter sur son char.
Now, the men, could divine, so they hastened to let him confirm the word of his own accord, and they said, —Thy brother, is Ben-hadad! He said therefore, —Go fetch him. So Ben-hadad came forth unto him, and he made him come up unto him on his chariot.
34 Et Bénadad lui dit: Je vous rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à votre père; et faites-vous des places publiques dans Damas, comme s’en fit mon père dans Samarie; et moi, ainsi allié, je me retirerai d’auprès de vous. Achab fit donc alliance, et le laissa aller.
And he said unto him—The cities which my father took from thy father, will I restore, and, bazaars, shalt thou make thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. So then, I, with this covenant, will let thee go. So he solemnised with him a covenant, and let him go.
35 Alors un certain homme d’entre les fils des prophètes dit à son compagnon avec la parole du Seigneur: Frappe-moi. Mais comme celui-ci ne voulut pas le frapper,
And, a certain man of the sons of the prophets, said unto his neighbour, by the word of Yahweh—Smite me, I pray thee. But the man refused to smite him.
36 Il lui dit: Parce que tu n’as pas voulu écouter la voix du Seigneur, tu t’éloigneras de moi, et le lion te tuera. Lorsqu’il fut un peu éloigné de lui, le lion le trouva et le tua.
So he said to him—Because thou hast not hearkened unto the voice of Yahweh, lo! when thou art departing from me, there shall smite thee a lion. And when he departed from beside him, a lion found him, and smote him.
37 Mais rencontrant aussi un autre homme, il lui dit: Frappe-moi. Cet homme le frappa et le blessa.
Then found he another man, and said, —Smite me, I pray thee. So the man smote him—kept on smiting and wounding.
38 Le prophète s’en alla donc, et vint à la rencontre du roi dans la voie, et il changea, en y répandant de la poussière, son visage et ses yeux.
Then the prophet departed, and waited for the king, by the way, —and disguised himself with his turban over his eyes.
39 Et lorsque le roi fut passé, il cria après lui, et dit: Votre serviteur est sorti pour combattre de près, et, comme un homme s’est enfui, quelqu’un me l’a amené, et a dit: Garde cet homme; et, s’il s’échappe, ton âme sera pour son âme, ou tu pèseras un talent d’argent.
And so it was, when, the king, was passing, he, cried out unto the king, —and said—Thy servant, went out in the midst of the battle, and lo! a man, turned aside and brought unto me a man, and said—Keep this man, if he be, missing, then shall, thy life, go for, his life, or, a talent of silver, shalt thou weigh out.
40 Mais tandis que moi, troublé, je me tournais ici et là, il a subitement disparu. Et le roi d’Israël lui dit: C’est ton jugement que toi-même tu as prononcé.
And so it was, as thy servant was busy here and there, that, he, was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him—Such, is thy judgment, thou thyself, hast decided it.
41 Mais lui aussitôt essuya la poussière de son visage, et le roi d’Israël reconnut qu’il était du nombre des prophètes.
Then hastened he, and removed the turban from over his eyes, —and the king of Israel knew him, that, of the prophets, was, he.
42 Il dit au roi: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Parce que tu as laissé échapper de ta main un homme digne de mort, ta vie sera pour sa vie, et ton peuple pour son peuple.
And he said unto him—Thus, saith Yahweh, Because thou hast let go the man whom I had devoted, out of thy hand, therefore shall, thy life, be instead of, his life, and, thy people, instead of, his people.
43 Le roi d’Israël retourna donc en sa maison, dédaignant d’entendre, et, plein de fureur, il vint dans Samarie.
And the king of Israel departed unto his house, sullen and disturbed, —and entered Samaria.
