1 Or, approchèrent les jours où David devait mourir, et ils ordonna à Salomon, son fils, disant:
The time of David's death was approaching, so he gave his son Solomon these last instructions:
2 Moi j’entre dans la voie de toute la terre: fortifie-toi, et sois homme.
“I am about to go the way everybody on earth must go. Be brave, and act like a man.
3 Observe les commandements du Seigneur ton Dieu, afin que tu marches dans ses voies, que tu gardes ses cérémonies, ses préceptes, ses ordonnances et ses lois, comme il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, afin que tu comprennes tout ce que tu feras et toutes tes démarches,
Do what God orders you to do, follow his ways. Keep his rules, his commands, and his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses, so you may be successful in everything you do, and in everything you give your attention to.
4 Afin que le Seigneur confirme les paroles qu’il a prononcées à mon sujet, disant: Si tes enfants gardent leurs voies, et qu’ils marchent devant moi dans la vérité, en tout leur cœur et en toute leur âme, un homme ne te sera pas enlevé du trône d’Israël.
If so, then the Lord will keep his promise to me when he said: ‘If your descendants are to live right before me, faithfully and with complete commitment, then you will always have one of them on the throne of Israel.’
5 Toi aussi, tu sais ce que m’a fait Joab, fils de Sarvia, et ce qu’il a fait à deux chefs de l’armée d’Israël, à Abner, fils de Ner, et à Amasa, fils de Jéther, qu’il a tués; et il a versé en paix du sang de guerre; et il a mis du sang de combat sur le baudrier qui était à ses reins et sur la chaussure qui était à ses pieds.
In addition, you know what Joab, son of Zeruiah, did to me and what he did to Abner, son of Ner, and Amasa, son of Jether, the two army commanders of Israel. He murdered them, spilling the blood of war during a time of peace. He smeared the blood of war on his belt and on his sandals.
6 Tu feras donc selon ta sagesse, et tu ne laisseras pas descendre en paix ses cheveux blancs dans les enfers. (Sheol h7585)
Do what you think is right, but don't let his gray head go down peacefully into the grave. (Sheol h7585)
7 Mais tu rendras grâce aux fils de Berzellaï, le Galaadite, et ils mangeront à la table: car ils ont couru au-devant de moi, quand je fuyais devant Absalom, ton frère.
But be kind to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead. Bring them into your royal court, for they helped me when I ran from your brother Absalom.
8 Tu as aussi auprès de toi Séméi, fils de Géra, fils de Jémini, de Bahurim, qui m’a maudit de la malédiction la plus cruelle, quand je m’en allais au camp: mais, parce qu’il descendit au-devant de moi, lorsque je traversai le Jourdain, je lui jurai par le Seigneur, disant: Je ne te tuerai point par le glaive.
Don't you forget Shimei, son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim who cursed me with painful words when I went to Mahanaim. When he met me at the Jordan I swore to him by the Lord, ‘I will not kill you with the sword.’
9 Pour toi, ne souffre pas qu’il n’éprouve aucun dommage. Mais tu es un homme sage, en sorte que tu sais ce que tu lui feras, et tu feras descendre ses cheveux blancs avec du sang dans les enfers. (Sheol h7585)
So don't leave him unpunished. You're a wise man and you know what you have to do to him—send him down into the grave with blood on his gray head.” (Sheol h7585)
10 David dormit donc avec ses pères, et il fut enseveli dans la cité de David.
Then David died and his was buried in the City of David.
11 Or, les jours durant lesquels David régna sur Israël furent de quarante années: à Hébron, il régna sept ans, et à Jérusalem, trente-trois ans.
His reign over Israel lasted forty years; seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.
12 Et Salomon s’assit sur le trône de David, son père, et son règne s’affermit puissamment.
Solomon took over as king, sitting on the throne of his father David, and his hold on his kingdom was secure.
13 Et Adonias, fils d’Haggith, entra chez Bethsabée, mère de Salomon. Elle lui demanda: Ton entrée ici est-elle pacifique? Il lui répondit: Pacifique.
Adonijah, son of Haggith, went to see Bathsheba, Solomon's mother. She asked him, “Have you come here with good intentions?” He replied, “Yes, with good intentions.”
14 Et il ajouta: J’ai un mot pour vous. Elle lui dit: Parle. Et lui:
“I have something I'd like to ask of you,” he continued. “Go on,” she said.
15 Vous savez, dit-il, que le royaume était à moi, et que tout Israël m’avait mis à sa tête comme roi; mais le royaume a été transféré, et il a passé à mon frère; car c’est par le Seigneur qu’il lui a été attribué.
“You know that the kingdom was mine,” he declared, “and everyone in Israel was looking forward to me being their next king. But everything was turned upside-down, and the kingdom passed to my brother, because that's what the Lord wanted.
16 Maintenant donc, je ne vous fais qu’une seule prière; ne couvrez pas ma face de confusion. Bethsabée lui dit: Parle.
Now I've just one request to ask of you—please don't say no.” “Tell me,” she said.
17 Et Adonias lui dit: Je vous prie de dire à Salomon, le roi (car il ne peut rien vous refuser), qu’il me donne Abisag, la Sunamite, pour femme.
He went on, “Please talk to King Solomon for me because he won't turn you down. Ask him to give me Abishag from Shunem as my wife.”
18 Et Bethsabée dit: Bien; je parlerai moi-même pour toi au roi.
“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will talk to the king for you.”
19 Bethsabée vint donc auprès du roi Salomon, afin de lui parler pour Adonias; et le roi se leva au-devant d’elle, puis il s’assit sur son trône: et un trône fut placé pour la mère du roi, laquelle s’assit à sa droite.
So Bathsheba went to talk to King Solomon for Adonijah. The king got up from his throne to meet her, and bowed before her. Then he sat back down and ordered another throne brought in for his mother. She sat to his right.
20 Et elle lui dit: Je n’ai qu’une petite prière à te faire; ne couvre pas ma face de confusion. Et le roi lui dit: Demandez, ma mère; car il n’est pas juste que j’écarte votre face.
“I have just one small request to ask of you,” she said. “Please don't say no.” The king replied, “Ask away, dear mother. I won't say no to you.”
21 Bethsabée lui dit: Qu’Abisag, la Sunamite, soit donnée à Adonias, ton frère, pour femme.
“Please give Abishag from Shunem to your brother Adonijah as his wife,” she replied.
22 Et le roi Salomon répondit et dit à sa mère: Pourquoi demandez-vous Abisag, la Sunamite, pour Adonias? Demandez aussi pour lui le royaume; car il est mon frère aîné, et il a déjà pour lui Abiathar, le prêtre, et Joab, fils de Sarvia.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why on earth are you asking me to give Abishag to Adonijah? You might as well ask me to give my brother the kingdom! He is my older brother, and Abiathar the priest and Joab, son of Zeruiah, are on his side!”
23 C’est pourquoi le roi Salomon jura par le Seigneur, disant: Que Dieu me fasse ceci, et qu’il ajoute cela, si ce n’est pas contre son âme qu’Adonias a dit cette parole.
Then King Solomon vowed before the Lord, “May God punish me, really punish me, if what Adonijah has asked for doesn't cost him his life.
24 Et maintenant le Seigneur vit, lui, qui m’a affermi, qui m’a placé sur le trône de David, mon père, et qui m’a fait une maison, comme il l’avait dit! aujourd’hui Adonias sera mis à mort.
So I vow, as the Lord lives, who affirmed me as king and placed me on the throne of my father David, making me the head of a dynasty as he promised, Adonijah shall be executed today.”
25 Et le roi Salomon envoya Banaïas, fils de Joïada, qui le tua, et il mourut.
King Solomon sent Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, who carried out the king's orders and executed Adonijah.
26 Le roi dit aussi à Abiathar, le prêtre: Va à Anathoth, dans ton champ; à la vérité, tu es un homme de mort; mais aujourd’hui je ne te tuerai point, parce que tu as porté l’arche du Seigneur Dieu devant David, mon père, et que tu as supporté le labeur dans toutes les choses dans lesquelles mon père l’a enduré.
In the case of Abiathar, the high priest, the king told him, “Go home and take care of your fields. You should be condemned to death, but I will not kill you right now because you carried the Ark of the Lord God ahead of my father David and went through all his hard times with him.”
27 Salomon relégua donc Abiathar, pour qu’il ne fût plus le prêtre du Seigneur, afin que la parole que le Seigneur avait dite fût accomplie sur la maison d’Héli à Silo.
So Solomon dismissed Abiathar from his position as priest of the Lord, and so fulfilled what the Lord had said at Shiloh regarding the descendants of Eli.
28 Or cette nouvelle vint à Joab, parce qu’il avait passé à Adonias, et qu’il n’avait pas passé à Salomon: Joab donc s’enfuit dans le tabernacle du Seigneur, et saisit la corne de l’autel.
When Joab heard the news he ran to the Lord's Tent and grabbed hold of the horns of the altar. (He had not supported Absalom's rebellion but he had supported Adonijah.)
29 Et l’on annonça au roi Salomon que Joab s’était enfui dans le tabernacle du Seigneur, et qu’il était près de l’autel; et Salomon envoya Banaïas, fils de Joïada, disant: Va, et tue-le.
When King Solomon was told that Joab was seeking sanctuary by the altar, he sent Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, to execute him.
30 Et Banaïas vint au tabernacle du Seigneur, et dit à Joab: Voici ce que dit le roi: Sors. Joab répondit: Je ne sortirai point, mais je mourrai ici. Banaïas rapporta cette parole au roi, disant: Voilà ce qu’a dit Joab, et voilà ce qu’il m’a répondu.
Benaiah went to the Lord's Tent and told called to Joab, “The king orders you to come out!” “No! I'll die here!” Joab replied. Benaiah went back to the king and told him what Joab had said.
31 Et le roi lui dit: Fais comme il a dit: tue-le et l’ensevelis; et tu écarteras de moi et de la maison de mon père un sang innocent qui a été versé par Joab.
“Do as he says,” the king told Benaiah. “Strike him down and bury him. In that way you will remove from me and my family the guilt of the innocent blood that Joab shed.
32 Et le Seigneur fera retomber son sang sur sa tête, parce qu’il a tué deux hommes justes, meilleurs que lui, et qu’il les a tués par le glaive, mon père David l’ignorant: Abner, fils de Ner, prince de la milice d’Israël, et Amasa, fils de Jéther, prince de l’armée de Juda;
The Lord will pay him back for the blood he shed, for without my father David's knowledge, he killed two good men who were better than he was. With his sword he killed Abner, son of Ner, commander of Israel's army, and Amasa, son of Jether, commander of Judah's army.
33 Et leur sang retombera sur la tête de Joab et sur la tête de sa postérité pour jamais. Mais qu’à David et à sa postérité, à sa maison et à son trône, soit une paix éternelle par le Seigneur.
May the responsibility for shedding their blood come back on Joab and his descendants forever; but may the Lord give peace and prosperity to David, his descendants, his family, and his dynasty forever.”
34 C’est pourquoi Banaïas, fils de Joïada, monta; et ayant attaqué Joab, il le tua; et il fut enseveli en sa maison, dans le désert.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada returned and killed Joab. He was buried at his home in the wilderness.
35 Et le roi établi Banaïas, fils de Joïada, sur l’armée au lieu de Joab, et il mit Sadoc, le prêtre, à la place d’Abiathar.
The king appointed Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, to take over Joab's role as army commander, and replaced Abiathar with Zadok the priest.
36 Le roi envoya aussi, et appela Séméi, et lui dit: Bâtis-toi une maison dans Jérusalem, et demeures-y, et n’en sors point pour aller ici et là.
Then the king summoned Shimei and told him, “Go and build yourself a house in Jerusalem and stay there, but don't leave and go anywhere else.
37 Or, au jour où tu sortiras, et tu passeras le torrent de Cédron, sache que tu seras tué et que ton sang sera sur ta tête.
You should know for certain that the day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley you will die. Your death will be your own responsibility.”
38 Séméi dit au roi: Cette parole est juste. Comme mon seigneur le roi a dit, ainsi fera votre serviteur. C’est pourquoi Séméi demeura longtemps à Jérusalem.
“What Your Majesty says is fair,” Shimei replied. “Your servant will do as my lord the king has ordered.” Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.
39 Mais il arriva, après trois ans, que les esclaves de Séméi s’enfuirent vers Achis, fils de Maacha, roi de Geth; et on annonça à Séméi que ses esclaves étaient allés à Geth.
But three years later, two of Shimei's slaves escaped to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. Shimei was told, “Look, your slaves are in Gath.”
40 Et Séméi se leva, scella son âne, et s’en alla vers Achis, à Geth, pour redemander ses esclaves, et les ramena de Geth.
So Shimei saddled up his donkey and went to Achish in Gath to look for his slaves. He found them and brought them back from Gath.
41 Or, on annonça à Salomon que Séméi avait été de Jérusalem à Geth, et qu’il était revenu.
Solomon was informed that Shimei had left Jerusalem to go to Gath, and had then returned.
42 Et envoyant, il l’appela, et lui dit: Ne t’ai-je pas juré par le Seigneur, et dit par avance: Au jour où, étant sorti, tu iras ici et là, sache que tu mourras? Et tu m’as répondu: Elle est juste la parole que j’ai entendue.
The king summoned Shimei and asked him, “Didn't I vow to you by the Lord, didn't I warn you that the day you left and went somewhere else that you should know for certain that you would die? Didn't you reply to me, ‘What Your Majesty says is fair; I'll do as you ordered’?
43 Pourquoi donc n’as-tu pas gardé le serment du Seigneur, et l’ordre que je t’avais donné?
So why haven't you kept your vow to the Lord, and obeyed my orders?”
44 Et le roi dit à Séméi: Tu sais toi-même tout le mal que ton cœur te reproche d’avoir fait à David, mon père: le Seigneur a fait retomber ta malice sur ta tête.
The king also told Shimei, “Deep down you know all the evil things you did to my father David. That's why the Lord will repay you for your evil.
45 Elle roi Salomon sera béni, et le trône de David sera stable devant le Seigneur à jamais.
But I, King Solomon, will be blessed and David's dynasty will be kept safe in the presence of the Lord forever.”
46 C’est pourquoi Salomon commanda à Banaïas, fils de Joïada; et Banaïas sortit, frappa Séméi; et il mourut.
The king ordered Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, to execute Shimei, so he went and killed Shimei. In this way Solomon's hold on the kingdom was made secure.
