1 Or Achab annonça à Jézabel tout ce qu’avait fait Elie, et de quelle manière il avait tué par le glaive tous les prophètes.
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Et Jézabel envoya un messager à Elie, disant: Que les dieux me fassent ceci, et qu’ils ajoutent cela, si demain à cette heure, je ne mets ton âme comme l’âme de chacun d’eux!
Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do [to me], and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
3 Elie craignit donc, et, se levant, il s’en alla partout où le portait son désir; or il vint à Bersabée en Juda, et là il renvoya son serviteur,
And when he saw [that], he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which [belongeth] to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 Et il fit dans le désert le chemin d’une journée. Or lorsqu’il fut venu, et qu’il se fut assis sous un genièvre, il demanda pour son âme de mourir, et il dit: C’est assez pour moi. Seigneur, prenez mon âme; car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères.
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I [am] not better than my fathers.
5 Et il se jeta parterre, et s’endormit à l’ombre du genièvre; et voilà qu’un ange du Seigneur le toucha, et lui dit: Lève-toi, et mange.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise [and] eat.
6 Il regarda, et voilà auprès de sa tête un pain cuit sous la cendre et un vase d’eau; il mangea donc et but, et de nouveau il s’endormit.
And he looked, and, behold, [there was] a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7 Et l’ange du Seigneur revint une seconde fois, le toucha, et lui dit: Lève-toi, et mange; car il te reste un grand chemin.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise [and] eat; because the journey [is] too great for thee.
8 Et, lorsqu’il se fut levé, il mangea et but; et il marcha, fortifié par cette nourriture, quarante jours et quarante nuits, jusqu’à Horeb, la montagne de Dieu.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 Or, lorsqu’il fut arrivé là, il demeura dans la caverne; et voilà que la parole du Seigneur lui fut adressée, et lui dit: Que fais-tu ici, Elie?
And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD [came] to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 Or lui répondit: Je brûle d’un grand zèle pour vous, Seigneur Dieu des armées, parce que les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné votre alliance; ils ont détruit vos autels, ils ont tué vos prophètes par le glaive, et je suis resté moi seul, et ils cherchent mon âme pour la détruire.
And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, [even] I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 Alors le Seigneur lui dit: Sors, et tiens-toi sur la montagne devant le Seigneur: et voilà que le Seigneur passa, et un vent violent et impétueux renversant des montagnes et brisant des rochers devant le Seigneur, et le Seigneur n’était point dans le vent; et après le vent, un tremblement de terre, et le Seigneur n’était pas dans le tremblement;
And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; [but] the LORD [was] not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; [but] the LORD [was] not in the earthquake:
12 Et après le tremblement, un feu, et le Seigneur n’était point dans le feu; et après le feu, vint le souffle d’une brise légère.
And after the earthquake a fire; [but] the LORD [was] not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 Ce qu’ayant entendu. Elie couvrit son visage de son manteau, et étant sorti, il se tint à l’entrée de la caverne; et voilà qu’une voix vint à lui, disant: Que fais-tu là, Elie? Et lui répondit:
And it was [so], when Elijah heard [it], that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, [there came] a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
14 Je brûle d’un grand zèle pour vous. Seigneur Dieu des armées, parce que les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné votre alliance; ils ont détruit vos autels, ils ont tué vos prophètes par le glaive, et je suis resté moi seul, et ils cherchent mon âme pour la détruire.

15 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Va, et retourne en ta voie par le désert, à Damas; et, lorsque tu y seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazaël roi sur la Syrie.
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael [to be] king over Syria:
16 Tu oindras encore Jéhu, fils de Namsi, roi sur Israël; mais Elisée, fils de Saphat, qui est d’Abelméhula, tu l’oindras prophète en ta place.
And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint [to be] king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint [to be] prophet in thy room.
17 Et il adviendra que quiconque aura échappé au glaive d’Hazaël, Jéhu le tuera; et quiconque aura échappé au glaive de Jéhu, Elisée le tuera.
And it shall come to pass, [that] him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18 Et je me réserverai dans Israël sept mille hommes dont les genoux n’ont pas fléchi devant Baal, et toute bouche qui ne l’a pas adoré en baisant ses mains.
Yet I have left [me] seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19 Etant donc parti de là, Elie trouva Elisée, fils de Saphat, qui labourait avec douze paires de bœufs; et lui-même était un de ceux qui labouraient avec les douze paires de bœufs. Et lorsqu’il fut venu vers Elisée, il jeta son manteau sur lui.
So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who [was] plowing [with] twelve yoke [of oxen] before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 Elisée aussitôt, ses bœufs abandonnés, courut après Elie, et dit: Que j’embrasse, je vous prie, mon père et ma mère, et alors je vous suivrai. Et il lui répondit: Va, et reviens; car j’ai fait pour toi ce que j’avais à faire.
And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and [then] I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
21 Elisée, ayant quitté Elie, prit une paire de bœufs et les tua; et avec la charrue des bœufs il fit cuire la chair, et la donna au peuple, et ils mangèrent; alors, se levant, il s’en alla, suivit Elie; et il le servait.
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
