1 En ce temps-là, Abia, fils de Jéroboam, fut malade,

In that time Abijah, the son of Jeroboam, became ill.

2 Et Jéroboam dit à sa femme: Lève-toi, change de vêtement, pour qu’on ne sache point que tu es femme de Jéroboam, et va à Silo, où est Ahias le prophète, qui m’a dit que je devais régner sur ce peuple.

And Jeroboam said to his wife: “Rise up, and change clothing, so that you will not be recognized to be the wife of Jeroboam. And go to Shiloh, where the prophet Ahijah is, who said to me that I should reign over this people.

3 Prends aussi en ta main dix pains, une galette et un vase de miel, et va vers lui; car lui-même t’indiquera ce qui doit arriver à cet enfant.

Also, take in your hand ten loaves, and dried bread, and a container of honey, and go to him. For he will reveal to you what will happen to this boy.”

4 La femme de Jéroboam fit comme il avait dit; et, se levant, elle alla à Silo, et vint dans la maison d’Ahias; mais celui-ci ne pouvait voir, parce que ses yeux s’étaient obscurcis à cause de sa vieillesse.

The wife of Jeroboam did just as he had said. And rising up, she went away to Shiloh. And she arrived at the house of Ahijah. But he was unable to see, because his eyes had dimmed due to old age.

5 Or le Seigneur dit à Ahias: Voilà que la femme de Jéroboam vient te consulter sur son fils qui est malade: tu lui diras ceci et cela. Comme donc elle entrait, et dissimulait qui elle était,

Then the Lord said to Ahijah: “Behold, the wife of Jeroboam enters, so that she may consult you over her son, who is ill. You shall say one thing and another to her.” Therefore, as she was entering, not presenting herself to be who she was,

6 Ahias entendit le bruit de ses pieds lorsqu’elle entrait à la porte, et il dit: Entrez, femme de Jéroboam: pourquoi feignez-vous d’être une autre? Pour moi, je vous suis envoyé comme un messager funeste.

Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, entering through the door. And he said: “Enter, O wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be someone you are not? But I have been sent to you with harsh news.

7 Allez, et dites à Jéroboam: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Je t’ai élevé du milieu du peuple, et je t’ai établi chef sur mon peuple Israël;

Go, and tell Jeroboam: ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Although I exalted you from the midst of the people, and I granted to you to be the leader over my people Israel,

8 Et j’ai divisé le royaume de la maison de David et te l’ai donné; et tu n’as point été comme mon serviteur David, qui a gardé mes commandements, et qui m’a suivi en tout son cœur, faisant tout ce qui était agréable en ma présence;

and I tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and I gave it to you, yet you have not been like David, my servant, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with his whole heart, doing what was pleasing in my sight.

9 Mais tu as fait plus de maux que tous ceux qui ont été avant toi, et tu t’es fait des dieux étrangers et jetés en fonte, pour me provoquer au courroux, et tu m’as rejeté derrière toi.

Instead, you have worked evil beyond all those who were before you. And you have made for yourself strange gods and molten images, so that you provoke me to anger. And you have cast me behind your back.

10 C’est pourquoi voilà que j’amènerai des maux sur la maison de Jéroboam, et je frapperai de Jéroboam celui qui urine contre une muraille, celui qui est renfermé, et celui qui est le dernier dans Israël; et je nettoyerai les restes de la maison de Jéroboam, comme on a coutume de nettoyer le fumier, jusqu’à ce que tout soit net.

For this reason, behold, I will lead evils over the house of Jeroboam, and I will strike down from Jeroboam that which urinates against a wall, and that which is lame, and that which is last in Israel. And I will cleanse that which remains of the house of Jeroboam, just as dung is usually cleaned away, until there is purity.

11 Ceux de Jéroboam qui mourront dans la ville, les chiens les mangeront, et ceux qui mourront dans la campagne, les oiseaux du ciel les dévoreront, parce que c’est le Seigneur qui a parlé.

Those who will have died of Jeroboam in the city, the dogs will devour them. And those who will have died in the field, the birds of the heavens will devour them. For the Lord has spoken.’

12 Vous donc, levez-vous, et allez en votre maison; et, à l’entrée même de vos pieds dans la ville, l’enfant mourra,

Therefore, you must rise up, and go to your house. And in the city, at the very entrance of your feet, the boy will die.

13 Et tout Israël le pleurera et l’ensevelira; car c’est le seul de Jéroboam qui sera porté dans un sépulcre, parce qu’il a été trouvé en lui quelque chose de bon par le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël dans la maison de Jéroboam.

And all of Israel will mourn him, and will bury him. For he alone of Jeroboam shall be brought into a sepulcher. For concerning him, there has been found a good word from the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

14 Mais le Seigneur s’est établi un roi sur Israël, qui frappera la maison de Jéroboam en ce jour et en ce temps;

But the Lord has appointed for himself a king over Israel, who will strike down the house of Jeroboam, in this day and in this time.

15 Et le Seigneur Dieu frappera Israël comme le roseau a coutume d’être agité dans l’eau, et il arrachera Israël de la bonne terre qu’il a donnée à leurs pères, et il les dispersera au-delà du fleuve, parce qu’ils se sont fait des bois sacrés pour irriter le Seigneur.

And the Lord God shall strike Israel, just as a reed is usually shaken in the water. And he will uproot Israel from this good land, which he gave to their fathers. And he will winnow them beyond the river. For they have made for themselves sacred groves, so that they have provoked the Lord.

16 Et le Seigneur livrera Israël à cause des péchés de Jéroboam, qui a péché et qui a fait pécher Israël.

And the Lord will hand over Israel, because of the sins of Jeroboam, who has sinned and caused Israel to sin.”

17 C’est pourquoi la femme de Jéroboam se leva, s’en alla, et vint à Thersa; et lorsqu’elle entrait sur le seuil de la porte de sa maison, l’enfant mourut,

And so, the wife of Jeroboam rose up, and she went away. And she arrived at Tirzah. And as she was entering the threshold of the house, the boy died.

18 Et on l’ensevelit. Et tout Israël le pleura, selon la parole du Seigneur qu’il avait dite par l’entremise de son serviteur Ahias, le prophète.

And they buried him, and all of Israel mourned for him, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he spoke by the hand of his servant Ahijah, the prophet.

19 Mais le reste des actions de Jéroboam, comment il combattit, et comment il régna, voilà que c’est écrit dans le Livre des actions des jours des rois d’Israël.

Now the rest of the words of Jeroboam, the manner in which he fought, and the manner in which he reigned, behold, these were written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel.

20 Or les jours durant lesquels Jéroboam régna furent de vingt-deux ans, et il dormit avec ses pères, et Nadab, son fils, régna en sa place.

And the days during which Jeroboam reigned were twenty-two years. And he slept with his fathers. And Nadab, his son, reigned in his place.

21 Cependant Roboam, fils de Salomon régnait sur Juda. Roboam avait quarante-un ans lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna dix-sept ans dans la ville de Jérusalem, que le Seigneur avait choisie d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël pour y établir son nom. Or le nom de sa mère était Naama, l’Ammanite.

Now Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he had begun to reign. And he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the Lord chose, out of all the tribes of Israel, so that he might place his name there. And the name of his mother was Naamah, an Ammonite.

22 Et Juda fit le mal aux yeux du Seigneur, et ils l’irritèrent au-delà de tout ce qu’avaient fait leurs pères, dans les péchés dont ils s’étaient rendus coupables,

And Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him beyond all that their fathers had done, by their sins that they committed.

23 Car ils se firent, eux aussi, des autels, des statues et des bois sacrés sur toute colline élevée et sous tout arbre couvert de feuillage.

For they, too, built for themselves altars, and statues, and sacred groves, upon every high hill and under every leafy tree.

24 Il y eut aussi des efféminés dans leur terre, et ils commirent toutes les abominations de ces nations que le Seigneur avait détruites devant la face des enfants d’Israël.

Moreover, the effeminate were in the land, and they committed all the abominations of the peoples that the Lord had destroyed before the face of the sons of Israel.

25 Or en la cinquième année du règne de Roboam, Sésac, roi d’Egypte, monta à Jérusalem,

Then, in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam, Shishak, the king of Egypt, ascended against Jerusalem.

26 Et il enleva les trésors de la maison du Seigneur et les trésors du roi, et il pilla tout, même les boucliers d’or qu’avait faits Salomon,

And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the royal treasures, and he plundered everything, including the shields of gold that Solomon had made.

27 En la place desquels le roi Roboam fit des boucliers d’airain, et il les mit entre les mains des chefs des scutaires, et de ceux qui veillaient devant la porte de la maison du roi.

In place of these, king Rehoboam made shields of brass, and he delivered them into the hand of the commanders of the shield bearers, and of those who were keeping the night watch before the gate of the king’s house.

28 Et lorsque le roi entrait dans la maison du Seigneur, ceux dont l’office était de marcher devant lui portaient ces boucliers, et ensuite ils les reportaient dans l’arsenal des scutaires.

And when the king entered into the house of the Lord, these were carried by those who held the office to go before him. And afterward, they carried them back to the armory of the shield bearers.

29 Mais le reste des actions de Roboam, et tout ce qu’il a fait, voilà que c’est écrit dans le Livre des actions des jours des rois de Juda.

Now the rest of the words of Rehoboam, and all that he did, behold, these were written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah.

30 Et il y eut guerre entre Roboam et Jéroboam durant tous leurs jours.

And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam, during all the days.

31 Et Roboam dormit avec ses pères, et il fut enseveli avec eux dans la cité de David. Le nom de sa mère était Naama l’Ammanite, et Abiam son fils régna en sa place.

And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and he was buried with them in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonite. And his son Abijam reigned in his place.
